Edwin S. Chen, MD is a graduate of Stanford University and Medical College of Ohio at University of Toledo. After completing his general eye surgery training at St. Vincent's Hospital-New York Medical College in Manhattan where he served as Chief Resident, he spent an additional year in fellowship studying the medical and surgical treatment of corneal diseases at the prestigious Devers Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon, a leader in eye care and a pioneering institution in the development of cutting-edge corneal transplantation, including the partial thickness tissue-sparing corneal transplant technique known as endothelial keratoplasty (EK/DLEK/DSEK/DSAEK).

While at Devers and in the years since, Dr. Chen has been recognized as an expert in corneal diseases through his publication of over 25 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. In addition, Dr. Chen has been invited to speak on his research and areas of expertise both nationally and internationally at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Cornea Society, and the European Eye Bank Association. Prior to moving back to Southern California where he grew up, Dr. Chen helped train future eye surgeons as an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF and later as an Assistant Professor at Jefferson University's Wills Eye Hospital, the oldest eye hospital in the country. His commitment to evidence-based medicine has led him to serve as a reviewer and referee for scientific journals including Ophthalmology (the official journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology), Eye (the official journal of the Royal College of Eye Surgeons), Cornea (the official journal of the Cornea Society), and Archives of Ophthalmology (the eye-specific publication of the American Medical Association), among others.

In addition to his subspecialty interests in corneal transplantation, Dr. Chen also enjoys practicing comprehensive eye care because it allows him to establish long-term relationships with his patients. He believes strongly that the best healthcare is built on the familiarity and trust that comes from a history between patient and physician.

Wait Time

Dr. Chen and his staff were very friendly and professional. There was no wait time time in the waiting room or in the office/chair. Each visit was very personable and thorough. You can tell right away how much he cares about his patients because he would take the extra time to make sure you were comfortable and answer any questions/concerns. I bring my whole family to him because I wouldn't trust anyone else! I would definitely recommend him!
