Gerald (Jerry) Duris, M.D., is a board certified Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice and has been at the Puyallup Clinic for 23 years. He
believes strongly in the innate ability of a patients "Heal Themselves" through appropriate exercise and nutrition habits.
Of course, he prescribes medications when needed, but strongly advises patients to follow natural methods to control common conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and stress. Our ancestors ate a high fiber diet and walked an average of 10-12 miles per day. The average American barely gets in one mile per day total, from morning to night.
In a very interesting study, patients with moderate to high levels of depression did just as well on moderate exercise programs (60 minutes four times per week)as compared to patients with anti-depressant medication. Many patients are able to say 'Good Bye' to their medications as they have jumped back on the road to health and fitness. It helps to begin slowly and make a steady, daily commitment to a better life.
Jerry and Debbie have made three trips as medical missionaries to Cameroon, West Africa over the past five years and plan to go back in the future. These trips have given us a chance to observe how these less fortunate people make the most of what they do have. Aditionarily,Jerry and his wife, Debbie, participate in cross fit training, walking, biking and Hot Yoga. They approach life with a smile and strong determination.
