Dr. James Powers DO

Professional Statement

Dr. Powers is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist specializing in the treatment of retinal diseases, including diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachments, floaters, medical and surgical retinal disease, and laser surgery.

Dr. Powers graduated cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry / Biophysics. He received his medical degree, with honors, from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Albany Medical Center. He then completed his post graduate fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the nationally respected University of South Florida Eye Institute. He has been awarded several academic scholarships from the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association and is a member of Psi Sigma Alpha Honor Society, a distinction associated with graduating in the top 10% of one's medical school class, and by 2003 he founded Healthy Vision which has expanded into the following locations: Dunedin/Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and New Port Richey.

Dr. Powers has worked with several well known and respected ophthalmologists and is affiliated with numerous hospitals and surgery centers, including: Helen Ellis Memorial, James A. Haley Veterans, Tampa General, St. Anthony's, as well as Bayfront, Largo and Suncoast Hospitals. In addition, he regularly attends medical conferences and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Osteopathic Association, the American Medical Association, the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, and is a Board Member and Governor or the Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Association. His research includes, co-investigator of the SOCA study (2001) and the Genentech FVF2128 study (2001). He has also authored numerous publications including Glaucoma Associations with Intraocular Tumors (2000) and Aphakic/Pseudophakic Glaucoma (2000).
