I have a highly individualized approach to each of my patients. I have been Board Certified in Psychiatry for over 30 years, and I have a long background
in both general psychiatry as well as psychopharmacology. Each patient is a unique human being, and I try to structure our work together to respond to each person’s individual needs and potentials.
I frequently provide medication to patients who are in psychotherapy with other therapists. Often medication alone may help relieve symptoms, but equally often a combination of medication and psychotherapy better meets a person's needs. At our initial consultation I will try to sort out the treatment modalities which will be most helpful, and present those to you as clearly as possible.
…
I had a great first visit he immediately made me feel at ease and was very friendly!
Great!
Dr. Shershow is a caring professional who listens to his patients.
He always looks extremely annoyed and like he wants you gone immediately. Never remembers anything
It was my first visit and it wasn't quite as personal as I had wanted but that is what my regular therapist is for I guess. I can definitely tell he is well seasoned and knows what he is doing. I liked the authoritative and nice efficient manner. It covered what he needed to and I am a quick cut and dry case so it was very solid, trustworthy and a good experience.
Dr. Shereshaw is knowledgable, direct and straightforward.
He's a very kind man and I feel very comfortable with him. He gives me options for treatment and makes an occasional joke too!
He was very precise and to the point. Helped me with what I needed and had me out the door in a timely fashion
Very nice and personable. Made you feel comfortable right away.
Quick and easy switch from a prior psychiatrist. Reasonable wait time, appointments before work when I need them, and appropriate sensitivity in his approach to mental health.
Very pleasant!
In and out. Very professional. Highly recommended.
As always, this appointment was in and out, four minutes flat. Dr Shershaw is fine if you need someone to write scrips every month, but if you need active help navigating/managing your medications and condition, look elsewhere.
He's great. Listens and fully answers my questions and concerns.
generally ok, although i had to wait for 15 minutes for no good reason (saw his previous patient enter and exit).
Dr. Shershow is always very friendly and accommodating. He is very insightful and genuine.
His appointments are 10 minutes long. That's not really enough time to even discuss an issue with someone. Still spells my name wrong on prescriptions and has written them for the wrong amount, etc, before as well. Probably won't be back.
excellent as usual!
Dr. Shershow is definitely the best doctor I've ever seen. He's prompt, knowledgeable, and (most importantly) makes you feel comfortable during your session. Highly recommend.
Dr. Shershow is a very proffesional physician. He listened to my complaint and gave me options on how to proceed. I hope this is the begining of a great doctor-patient relationship! Highly recommended.
By far the best, most personable and down to earth psychiatrist I've ever met, in NYC or otherwise. No matter what neighborhood or borough I move to, I'll be back.
He listed but not to the root of what I said. He prescribed two meds. We will see
Seriously, this guy operates a prescription farm. You have to book 10-15 minute appointments two weeks in advance because he squeezes every drop out of his day, so don't expect careful consideration. He's written my scrips wrong more than once. If I had any other viable options through my horrible insurance, I'd find a new doc in a heartbeat.
Helpful, professional
Good consult, reasonable medication management.
he and his staff are prompt. he is knowledgable in his field. and he listens to you and your preferences. my other doctor used to push medications on me i told him didnt agree with me. dr sherehow is professional, hears you out and helps you.
Don't take new patients. Maybe he lied to me for some reason, I have no clue whatsoever.
As a doctor myself, I strongly recommend Dr. Shershow without any reservations. He is exceptionally well trained. He is compassionate, a good listener, and his bedside manner is non-threatening. He also has a solid command of psychopharmacology and is familiar with all the lastest scientific literature with regard to treatment of mood and anxiety disorders.
PROS: Never had to wait longer than 15 mins to be seen, is up front and honest with costs and helpful answering insurance questions, assistant is pleasant, keeps early morning hours so I dont have to take time off work CONS: Spends little time with patients - If you need to talk out your problems with someone he is not the right doctor for you. OVERALL: I think he is a good doctor
Spends very little time with patients
Excellent Doctor! Very courteous and professional. Gives very precise advice and diagnosis.
I thought Dr. Shershow was very professional. He listened to my concerns and asked me relevent questions. I was in and out in 30 minutes and you can't ask for better during a lunch break!
Attentive, professional and understanding.
He is a very unpleasant person.
Went very well - Quick, Informative, and Easy to set up through ZocDoc
Dr Shershow is very kind & understanding. I appreciate the number of early morning (before work) appointments that he has available, and booking appointments was always easy through ZocDoc.
He seemed very caring and wanted to know everything about me and my issue. He gave me advice and recommeded the best solution. Im hoping to see him again
Very nice and honest. Referred me to a psychologist--out of network but either way. He was very helpful.
Hes great
Professional an courteous. Just does Drug therapy so make sure that is what you are looking for.
Listened to me and cared about what I was feeling. This, I've found, is a rarity in docs!
His appointments are 10 minutes apart. I was in there for less than 5 mins. Good if you're just looking to get your scripts. You should look elsewhere for a more thorough shrink.
Dr. Shershow was very attentive and seemed to genuinely care about the issues I presented. He recommended a treatment that I think is working very well so far and remembered me when I came in for my follow-up visit. He seemed to really care and was sincerely happy for my progress.
I've been seeing this doc for almost a year, he still refuses to remember how to pronounce my name. He has also managed to write prescriptions for the wrong dosages of medications for three months running now; not unsalvageable, but doesn't instill a lot of confidence.
Dr. Shershow is very straightforward and approachable. I have had no problems talking to him although I have found myself waiting for 15 to 20 minutes, on average, for an appointment
Very good professional, polite and clear.
He's great!
Dr. Shershow books his appointments in 15 min slots back to back so you do not get much time with him and as a result, it is hard to get a proper diagnosis and evaluation. He has the tendency to be patronizing in a backhanded way. If you are seriously unwell, I would recommend a different doctor. I only go for refills on prescriptions I've already been given.
The doctor didn't make me wait at all, which I really appreciate. He was a good listener and I would recommend him.
Dr. Shershow is amazing. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a no-nonsense doctor. I'm in and out quickly, but still get my questions answered and know I'm getting the best possible care!
Not personable, somewhat rushed.
I would not recommend Dr. Shershow. All he cares about is $$$$. Even after seeing him for a while, he would not refill a prescription for me over the phone in an emergency situation. Instead he wanted me to come in and pay him some absurd amount of money. He schedules patients every 15 minutes to maximize the amount he can bill insurance. He has incorrectly charged me on many occasions - he insistson keeping your credit card on file. I would not recommend him.
Doctor Shershow is easy to talk to but pretty efficient in getting you in and out. Great if you know what you need, but probably not as good for someone who wants a doctor who will spend a lot of time really working through issues.
As always, Dr. Shershow is a pleasure to meet with-he is understanding, witty and positive.
Very personable and understanding. Made me feel at ease. Was knowledgeable about medications and encouraged other outlets also.
Dr Shershow is always caring and gives you time to ask questions.
Excellent.
It's always a quick appointment with Dr. Shershow but he knows his stuff :) I recommend him.
Dr. Shershow was very helpful and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend.
Quick and to the point, friendly but not very warm personality, efficient management of patients and appointments times.
Dr. Shershow is great and I've been seeing him for almost a year now BUT rescheduling with him is a nightmare. I had a work emergency and called the moment they opened that morning to see if I could reschedule and was told I would have to pay $100 before I could schedule with him again. That seems pretty ridiculous for appointments that are 10 minutes long! I will be finding a new psychiatrist more interested in their patients than their money.
Very nice and professional.
Dr. Shershow was great. I felt comfortable with him within 5 minutes. He took the time to figure out what I really needed and gave me a great referral. Not the kind of doctor who will just write you up a prescription and kick you out.
Very rude when a mistake was made with my insurance. Even after the issue was fixed, he seemed to obsess over how it shouldn't have happened. He then proceeded to TELL my mother (who works with our insurance and was fixing the issue) that he believed that I was "very sick" and that I needed "a lot of help"... This man saw me for five minutes per session and was medicating me for seizure-like episodes, nothing to do with my emotional state and he CERTAINLY had no right to say something like that to ANYONE who isn't myself. I thought of just writing him and stating this but I think anyone who is looking to see him should look elsewhere.
He's seems competent, but unreliable if you need medication. Definitely read the negative reviews. I fired him after he started cancelling my zocdoc appointments without a word of explanation after a missed appointment.
When asked about options or alternative medications, a reference book would come off the shelf and be read through - not for interactions or specifics, but basics of what's available for a certain issue. Would have been more comfortable seeing more off-hand/experiential knowledge of what's being prescribed, as didn't seem to be familiar with the pharmacology without consulting the textbook. Names of medications and their components + methods of action would often be confused when asking about recommended alternatives until questioned and the book again referenced.
He is an excellent Doctor and I would definitely recommend his services to anyone who should ask.
Very professional and understanding. To the point and explained everything clearly.
I thought Dr. Shershow was wonderful. I had to wait a little longer than expected but the appointment was efficient and Dr. Shershow is lovely.
Very professional and thoughtful. I wouldnt waste my time filling out your personal information on zocdoc, however, because it didn't go through to the office and I had to fill it out again there.
This is a doctor who trusts me to assess my own psychological state, which is generally good, but it's troubling that he himself doesn't really probe at all. I've been seeing this guy for a year and he still says my name wrong. That's how good the rapport is.
I've been seeing Dr. Shershow since I moved to NYC last year. He's fantastic. It was really scary to have to find a new psychiatrist when I moved but I lucked out finding Dr. Shershow. I highly reccomend him.
Professional and to the point.
I thought he was very nice and funny. I felt comfortable talking to him and that he listened to my needs. He explained everything very well. I'm happy with my visit.
Dr. Shershow is a nice guy, but also very professional and right to the point: get in, get your meds, get out. Which is pretty much what seeing a psychiatrist means nowadays, so I don't have a big problem with that. But if you demand warm fuzzies to go with your pills, look elsewhere.
Overall I thought he was very nice - he has a very calm demeanor and the experience was as pleasant as an appointment like this could be. Also, the office is very easy to get to!
He was very caring, professional, and helpful.
Could not find a solution for my problem.
Excellent communicator, amiable. Painless!
A breath of fresh air.
Dr. Shershow is fine unless you have an issue with a refill or billing. I told him at my first appointment I would be away for the holidays. After not realizing my prescription was for less than 30 days I called to see if he would grant a 5 day refill. His secretary told me he does not do refills over the phone and belittled me for not reading the fine print on my initial paperwork. Dr. Shershow then got on the phone and accused me of asking him to practice psychiatry over the phone. I have an advanced degree in psychology, that was hardly the case. I have never been spoken to in such a demeaning manner by a doctor in my life. When I raced to his office to secure a refill that would give me time to find another doctor he was personally demeaning a couple with a small child over a cancelled appointment. They had cancelled via zocdoc but he was trying to charge them anyway. His secretary told the man on the side "I'm just doing what he tells me to do" obviously even his staff has a problem with his actions. He also asks for credit card numbers to be put on file at your first appointment, don't fall for it. Completely unethical. I am calling my insurance company about him and considering filing a complaint with the state.
ZocDoc ratings can be misleading. Dr Shershow is an able and knowledgeable doctor, but his patients are merely dollar signs. Expect your appointment to last for a max of 5 minutes. If you're looking to pay to have someone write out a prescription, this is the doc for you...
Horrible! This man speaks with you for 5-10 minutes before you're sent out the door. In professional administrative manners, he's extremely emotional and unprofessional! Couldn't stand him! Finally choosing to go elsewhere!
Very personable!
This guy's only interested in patients who have no understanding of their disease. Self-righteous and combative. Avoid.
he was wonderful
Dr. Shershow was very easy to talk to. I needed to find a new doctor after moving to the city and was nervous to find someone that would try and change my prescriptions or alter my treatment that I have been doing for the past 2 years. He was very understanding and gave good advice to get the best results. I trust his judgement and appreciate his to-the-point attitude. I think my next visits will be in and out which is a huge plus for my hectic schedule.
Only talked with me for 20 minutes before prescribing a medication - asked very little to get to know me personally, and asked very little about the nature of my anxiety. I didn't feel comfortable taking the medication he prescribed me after our session.
Dr. Shershow is a quite knowledgeable and erudite psychiatrist. He has a rather impressive career history, the experience thereby gained he readily shares with patients. I have been very pleased by the acuteness with which he seems to understand the patient as an individual. I also find the thoroughly at-ease atmosphere of the office to be roundly appropriate.
He was great. I did wait for a while but that was because I was late, and he was accommodating me.
Wonderful doctor. Very professional and helpful.
I arrived quite a bit early and he saw me right away. It was the first time I had seen a psychiatrist and he put me at ease. He took the time to discuss all of my questions but was efficient and didn't take longer than necessary - I didn't feel like it was a waste of my time! Highly recommended!
I love Dr. Shershow and am very comfortable with him. He's a very quick in and out type of guy, which is what I need.
Excellent!
Dr. Shershow is a caring and attentive doctor. He is very respectful and listens carefully. I was very pleased to have found him after some negative experiences with other doctors. Highly recommended.
good, happy.
Friendly and direct to the point.
Dr Shershow was professional, nice, and most importantly took the time to listen to my concerns. I recently moved here and I've been on the same medication for 4 years so I was a little nervous considering that everytime I switch docs they want to switch my medicine, but he kept me on my same meds and even added some extra advice. I'll go back!
I thought it was a typical visit. Very nice and had a nice conversation. I would recommend!
Generally professional, wasn't quite sure what to make of "what do you think you need?"
Great appointment! Seen relatively quickly, and Dr. Shershow was very courteous and patient. Would definitely recommend!
Needed to discuss my condition. However, he was only interested in writing my prescriptions. He only asked two questions. I did mention one condition that was bothering me but he just continued to write the prescription
Dr. Shershow neglected to have my prescription faxed in for me, which wound up causing me a lot of problems. He did not apologize, and was rude and condescending on the phone- exact opposite of the way one would hope a mental health professional would interact with a patient. Very disturbing interaction overall.
Dr Shershow was very attentive, understanding and personable. I'd highly recommend him to my close contacts.
Very informative visit, would recommend highly.
Good guy
He's a great psychiatrist. He always makes me feel comfortable. In and out quickly.
very satisfactory
Very brief. I was late though (I wasn't familiar with the area). He said he would give me 10 minute consultations, which is 35 minutes less than my old Psychiatrist. He was very friendly though and I need him for my RX more than therapy so it is what it is.
Very professional and nice. Easy to deal with and quickly diagnoses a problem and has a solution.
It was a good experience.
Dr. Shershow is genuine, caring and seems really concerned about his patients.
Oh my god. I implore you all, do NOT visit this doctor. He is so unbelievable unethical it's not even funny. I'm shocked to see positive reviews here. This man cares NOTHING for his patients. Is not interested in anything but money. It is one huge rip off to the next. Example: I was in an accident and was unable to come in for an appointment. I ran out of one of my prescriptions and called him, explained the situation to his (very kind) receptionist and waited all day to hear back from him. I heard back, oh yeah, but not from him, from his receptionist and GUESS WHAT -- he was charging me three times my usual copay just to call the pharmacy and put in a refill. I could not afford it and told the receptionist so. Are you kidding me? You are a mental health practitioner. In what WORLD is it ok to put your patients in such danger? Now I'm forced to be off of my medication for a few days just because this wealthy, old man can't put through a call.
been looking for a good dr, he is definitely one of them.
I had a wonderful first appointment with Dr. Shershow. He was very kind and reassuring, I look forward to seeing him going forward. Would highly recommend.
Dr Shershow seems personable and competent. However, I should have read the negative reviews. This is not a doctor to trust if you need medication that has discontinuation side effects: he or his staff cancel my zocdoc appointments without explanation, so I'm out of meds and looking for a new doctor.
Dr. Shershow is a kind, thoughtful and compassionate psychiatrist. He is deeply knowledgeable about mental health issues and it's clear that he really wants to help people to feel better. I was really impressed by my experience with him, through not only his clinical acumen and courteous welcoming professionalism but with his office assistant as well who was lovely and efficient making the whole process very smooth. You will not feel judged or under a microscope here, but rather that you are in good safe hands. As an aside, his office & waiting room are both comfortable and tastefully decorated.
Very strict rules about office visits every 2 months, even when rx has been the same for many years. Would not grant a temp weeklong rx refill when an appointment could not be scheduled before my rx ran out... supposed to go without meds for a week instead? Won't be going back.
Dr. Shershow was very engaging. I appreciated him seeing me so quickly and being attentive to my needs.
Very kind and knowledgeable
I have met with this doctor more than once. He does not give you refills and only gave me my prescription that would last for 3 weeks or one month at a time. On the last date, I was unable to make an appointment before my medincine expired. He refused to call in a refill! Even while acknowdleging that there would be siginigicant negative side effects if there was a lapse in the medication. Instead he scolded me for not making an appt sooner and saying he is not a "urgent care" facility. This is ludicrous! I have seen all types of medical profesisonals throughout my life as well as accompanied family members to some of the best medical doctors in New York and never have I been subjected to anything like this. This is the first doctor that scolded his patient for not making an appt sooner and REFUSED to call in a refill knowing that it could cause his patient harm. Dr. Shershow's attitude was totally unprofessional. He is more concerned with the check he gets from my insurance company than my own welfare. Furthermore, the receptionist then told me she would "squeeze" me into an appt with him, so I left work early and rushed down to his office, and it was closed! So they scheduled me and left before I even arrived, and I was ten minutes early. Needless to say I will never go back to this practice again and do not recommend him.
Dr. Shershow was very informative, didn't rush the appointment and was very easy to talk to.
I've found Dr. Shershow to be consistantly and increasingly condescending. He also missed a major counter-indication between some of my prescriptions; it's not something that happens often, but I do think he should have looked it up.
He's a great doctor. Made me feel very comfortable.
I found Dr. Shershow through ZocDoc. What attracted me was his video and "tour" of the office. Of all the doctors and offices I've experienced in my lifetime (QUITE A FEW), he and his office staff are pleasant and the process was painless. I plan to continue to see him in conjunction with a psychologist or social worker once I find one I am comfortable with. Highly recommend Dr. Shershow.
very friendly and easy to speak to. I would highly recommend him!
Despite having multiple appointments, he never seemed to remember who I was--until I cancelled two appointments and got "locked out". He wasn't the least interested in why (the rapid decline and death of a family member, how dare I!). I was rudely and coldly informed that unless I paid for them, I was not welcome back. Again, this is after being a long term patient. Total Jekyll and Hyde when money is added into the equation. If that's what you're looking for, this is the doctor for you!
Very pleasant and attentive, professional. Very good experience, I would recommend him.
Dr. Shershow was attentive and gave me some great insights into my treatment. I arrived about 10 minutes before my appointment and he saw me within 15 minutes. It was a good visit and I will go back.
Dr. Shershow is simply wonderful. Very attentive and compassionate, took the time to really understand how to best tackle my issue. Also gave me a referral to another wonderful doctor to continue my treatment.
Just what the doctor ordered.
I did a bit of research on webmd and wikipedia before visiting Dr. John, so I was expecting more broad explanation on which options I have in terms of pros/cons, potential side effects and some background questions. Instead, it took him less than 5 minutes to write me prescription.
Unfortunately, Dr. Shershow wrote the incorrect prescription for me. Then, his office told me to have the pharmacy call only to have his office deny me my daily medication during a hurricane. Too many rules, doesn't take time to listen to issues. Completely only about medicine and not about you-as-patient. Lack of empathy. Would not recommend.
NOW I GET IT! I did a review of Dr. Shershow that was positive because I didn't mind his curt behavior and just chose to see it as efficient because I have a counselor and didn't rely on him that much for my emotional needs. He JUST YELLED AT ME AND HUNG UP ON ME. I called because I realized I am going to be two pills short during a vacation that will be longer than I expected. Instead of just saying, I don't/won't give you a refill. He said, "I believe you know I don't do that. I haven't seen you since August--oops October (it's Dec.). Why didn't you come back? All of this was yelling. I said, "Okay. Thank you." and he SLAMMED THE PHONE DOWN. I have never so much cried or shown any sort of irresponsible or irrational behavior with this man. His reaction was uncaring and uncalled for. Fine. Don't refill it. If I have a seizure it's my fault. I get it. But, I have never had a doctor YELL at me or not even try to accomodate an appointment (which is all of 10 or 15 min.) Other review sites mention that he tries to bill you inappropriately and he did that in Aug. I rescheduled on ZocDoc ant they called to charge me. Luckily, I had my confirmation and the woman realized she made a mistake. He still called me personally to berate me after it was cleared up. Please take your ZocDoc info with you because he is a greedy, mean, unorganized mess of a doctor.
Dr Shershow is professional and quick, exactly what I need on a busy morning schedule. Great Dr.
Nice, easy to speak with, thorough, and made sure I had all my questions answered.
He's a kind man which is very rare for psychiatrists.
The appointment was for an hour- we only met for about 15 minutes. Probably would've appreciated a heads up, then again I wasn't sure how in depth the appointment would get. Dr. Shershow was kind and asked a couple questions about my personal life. He didn't really do much digging regarding what medications I needed beyond what I asked for- although I was there mainly to get a prescription because I recently switched psychiatrists. Given that it was our first appointment, I felt as if it would have been a bit more in depth.
Very quick to prescribe medication rather than talking about the situation.
Was fast and in a very private setting, which this kind of appointment should be in. No wait time. Clean office. Impressive diplomas.
Dr Shershow is very personable and easy to work with--he won't just cut a scrip and then ignore what you have to say, especially if you've been on medication before. That said, he is a "candy man." Followup appts are under 10 minutes and are pretty in-and-out. This isn't talk therapy.
never remembers me. always thinks im a new patient
Dr. Shershow is professional and knowledgeable. His office staff is very friendly and helpful, the actual office is clean and cozy/modern, centrally located at Central Park South. It was easy to get my first appointment for a psych evaluation and I haven't had any issues getting appointments for my monthly med checks. For my initial appointment I explained to him my current diagnosis and medications (as I needed a new psychiatrist in New York with my new job and insurance). He was very attentive and open to suggestions in regards to changes in medications and/or dosages. He's up to date on new medications and treatments and I think I have finally found my NYC psychiatrist!
Very professional and took time and care to properly diagnosis my condition. Would recommend Dr.Shershow to anyone seeking sound, psychiatrist care.
It was fine.
I was always pretty skeptical of seeking any sort of psychiatric therapy, but Dr. Shershow put me at ease and was very professional, knowledgeable, and available for questions.
Dr. Shershow is kind, quick, and professional. You are in and out in under 20 minutes; no wait time and when you are in the office, he pretty much just asks what type of drug you want. He doesnt ask much about your personal life, struggles, etc. I would call it more a pharmacy consultation than a psychiatric appointment. I just think a psychiatrist should take a lot more time with patients before tossing high doses of anti depressants and anti anxiety meds at them.
He's very nice, listened to my concerns and addressed them and works with me to get me on the right track. Highly recommend.
Nice guy. Gave useful feedback.
I certainly got the impression that Dr. Shershow cares, is knowledgeable, and wants to help. However, I held back a star since, for someone who will be prescribing medication, the visit (and registration materials) spent surprisingly little time on my medical history. This wasn't much of an issue in my particular situation but anyone who has any medical concerns should be sure to bring them up.
The visit itself took less than 10 minutes, super convenient.
He got upset because I woke him out of his sleep.
Dr. Shershow was highly professional and gave me the frank and tough advice I needed to hear.
Smart, good sense of humor, and detailed.
He listened to me regarding the medication I was already on and seems to experienced. Only waited about 5 or 10 mins in the office.
Very fast but that's what you get with psychiatrists
He was polite, professional, and got right to the point. He listened to me, diagnosed me based on my symptoms and did not waste time.
Wonderful doctor.
Dr shershow doesnot spend much time with his patients and is not concerned with their well being. He over prescribes medication and i would not reccomend him.
Dr. Shershow was great. He was nice, patient, and listened to my concerns. Very helpful!
Awesome doc. Prescribes you whatever you need.
As someone who has seen a number of psychiatrists over the years, my (initial) overall experience was positive. He considered my previous treatments and provided input that indicated a measured approach.
Excellent physician. Good listener and diagnostician. Respectful. Would definitely recommend him to others.
Great!
Unlike lot of other doctors this one actually gave practical advice on how to fight depression.
Dr. Shershow is always extremely accommodating to my very busy schedule. Coming from Brooklyn, it may be a little out of the way for me, but it is definitely worth the trip.
He's great. Happy repeat client.
Visiting Dr. Shershow and his staff was a most pleasurable experience! It was extremely easy to find, and the fact that I filled out papers on zocdoc ahead of time made the process painless and quick! The visit was quick, but he took a generous amount of time to listen to me and my issues. I felt important and worthy of his time. Unrushed and understood. Definitely recommend
Dr. Shershow was warm, friendly, and professional. He engaged me in some real conversation and looked me in the face, which I appreciated. I didn't have to wait at all to see him. The visit was very short, because he knew exactly what to ask to understand my issues and assist me with them. I do not know what Dr. Shershow would be like if you are dealing with a new issue; probably just as excellent. But what I can certainly vouch for is, if you have a preexisting condition and need to follow up with a psychiatrist, he is definitely a good choice.
Absolutely unprofessional behavior. Ethically unsound practice. Would Not Recommend.
Easy, successful appointment.
If you want to self medicate, then this is the doctor for you. He spends absolutely 0 time asking anything about your personal life and basically asks you what medication you want. When asking specific questions about medications, side effects, statistics etc. he gives the same general answer. The initial apt (which is meant to be one hour, where most MDs will go through a detailed history with their patients asking them several detailed questions) lasts about 30-minutes and consists of the patient saying which meds you are taking) Each follow up is about 5 minutes where he writes your prescription while you are talking. On three separate occasions he has written the wrong script for me (dosage once, medication TYPE twice!) I have seen several psychs and thought switching to Dr. Shershow (based on his background and education) would be positive but it was the most negative experience. His rude demeanor didn't help. In an emergency situation he refused to refill my prescription bcs I did not make an appointment and told me he would fill it when I came in in two weeks. Completely unacceptable. I have been seeing a new psych the past few months and it is night and day! I do not rec Dr. John Shershow to anyone
Intuitive, quick, and relatively thorough considering the short amount of time spent with him. I felt that he understood my issues and concerns which are extremely important qualities in a psychiatrist.
Dr. Shershow is an excellent psychiatrist, efficient but also caring and thorough.
It was exactly what I expected. Short and to the point. This is what to expect of psychiatrists. In all a good experience so far.
As always Dr Shershow is highly professional, patient, and friendly. Great Doctor.
At first I was satisfied with Dr. Shershow, but after a confusion with my prescription refill, I've never been spoken to in such a condescending, rude, and appalling manner by a medical professional. All he cares about is making his money, not his patients well being. I'm still in disbelief that I could be so disrespected by my psychiatrist. Tread lightly with this one, you're better off elsewhere.
Satisfied
Dr. Shershow is a warm and intelligent. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a psychiatrist who is also a great therapist.
Great job, as always.
He was warm, friendly, and knowledgeable. He listened a lot and also explained things to me. I felt confident and very comfortable leaving his office. I would highly recommend him and I will be going back.
Overall, I find Dr. Shereshow personable and efficient, without being abrupt. I am new to NYC, so it has been quite a feat to find a doctor that takes insurance. After my initial visit, I returned to him for additional help and he adjusted my medication. I felt better immediately and we had a nice follow up visit shortly thereafter. I have counselor, so I leave all of my detailed conversations for those visits. I had one scheduling issue with an appointment that I cancelled. Thanks to ZocDoc, I had a record of my cancellation so it didn't take much to clear it up.
Dr. Shershow was excellent. Very professional and caring. He really put me at ease. I will definitely be going back.
Quick and Thorough!
I saw Dr. Shershow for the first time yesterday and he seems fantastic--knowledgeable, professional, eloquent. Great office, friendly staff. My only concern is that they made a giant photocopy of my credit card; this sort of thing makes me nervous in the age of credit card fraud, etc...
Fantastic
He was very patient and listened. He gave some clear options and was very informative.
A little too quick...
Very nice, polite and professional
I moved to NYC about a year ago and tried another psychiatrist before going to Dr. Sherhow. He was great! Very kind and seemed to have a genuine interest in helping me.
Highly concerned with efficacy and potential risks of treatment. Quick, comprehensive and in touch with what explanations I needed to hear.
Very professional, knowledgeable and understanding.
I thought he was great. I liked that he asked my opinion on what I wanted to try or thought that I needed. In the end, it is important I am comfortable with the treatment. Unlike, other reviews I didn't feel like he was forcing anything, and he certainly listened to my past treatments/needs and made appropriate recommendations. I think people must remember, he is not a therapist, he is not there to talk you through your problems, only to help you have the appropriate medicine. He did inquire and recommend that I see a therapist to work through the other side of the issues. Overall, I am pleased.
I could not have asked for a better first visit with Dr. Shershow. He was kind, funny, intelligent and cared about my medications and what plan was best for me. He never said, "We're going to go in THIS direction." Instead, he offered me options and, in the end, I went with his recommendation. He was truly someone I felt comfortable with immediately. The office was clean and pleasant as was the receptionist, Diane. Five star experience.
Very helpful and Professional. Currently having difficulty scheduling follow up appointment, but hopefully problem will be resolved in short order.
He was informative about medication options and having a Sat apointment hours a Big +.
Always friendly and easy to talk to. Informative and puts you at ease
I made me feel comfortable and he was really easy to talk to.
Highly recommended!!
Professional, respectful and highly recommend.
I moved to New York almost a year ago and had a very difficult time finding a psychiatrist who would take my insurance. I actually went back to my former doctor in Chicago in March. I was so frustrated taht I called BCBS and amazingly their rep got off of the phone and called from Georgia and found Dr. Shershow for me. I was able to get an appointment easily and the receptionist was nice and handled the scheduling very well. I am mostly seeing Dr. Shershow for med management, but I needed to discuss some changes in my condition and he listened and made some adjustments for me. I would give him a try and I plan on seeing him regularly.
Always great attention to details. A Dr. who cares.
My experience was quite pleasant. Dr. Shershow took the time to listen, but didn't hesitate to offer a decisive diagnosis. I recommend him highly!
Dr. Shershow puts me at ease and is very clear about what to expect from the treatments.
He was very friendly and explained things to me. He and his office staff were very accommodating.
Dr. Shershow is exactly what I expected, and I think most of the negative reviews here come from people who had the wrong expectations. Guys, a psychiatrist is NOT a therapist. Not any more. If you need therapy, go to a therapist. If you need meds, you go to a psychiatrist. Period.
Excellent Doctor.
GREAT!
Amazing. Friendly. Office is across the street from Central Park!
The doctor was pleasant, kind, thorough, and genuinely interested in me as a patient. I was automatically put at ease; he was terrific. My only complaint is that his secretary had a series of loud phone calls, seemingly about patients, that made her appear very whiny and defensive. They were uncomfortable to listen to. She was however extremely pleasant to me. An additional inconvenience would be that, after 30 minutes of sitting in the waiting room, another patient appeared and was automatically seen. (Ouch, guys. At least offer me some excuse next time!) But in the end, I found Dr. Shershow to be such a delight that I will definitely be returning.
Excellent doctor and excellent person. He really does care and has a very approachable demeanor. He'll tell you exactly what you need to know and answer all of your questions, all without being condescending.
Very helpful and supportive. Definitely would recommend
Very proffesional and understanding.
He was friendly and knowledgable. I appreciated that he explained things without resorting to glossing over scientific wording and concepts. As for the negative reviews here, it's clear that those people didn't read the description above. Dr. Shershow doesn't do counseling or therapy. He is a *psychiatrist*. They tend to diagnose and prescribe treatment in a similar way to your primary or other specialized doctors. If you want talk therapy, what you want is a psychologist or therapist.
Good doctor for patients that are not looking to talk extensively. To the point, brief but helpful.
The doctor was very kind, patient and courteous. I definitely recommend him!
He was very compassionate and knowledgeable and I felt completely at ease!
Very helpful and easy to talk to
I couldn't be happier. That's all there is to say.
Excellent! Best psychiatric experience I've ever had - he's warm, compassionate, and easy to talk to!
To the point. Was what I needed. He was very pleasant and non-judgmental.
It was really good and very helpful
Went to him for addiction therapy, he basically told me the only way he could help was if I went to rehab which I told him was not an option (financially or the time constraint) and he seemed eager to get me out of his office.
The receptionist was very nice and cheerful. I was very comfortable with Dr.Shershow and would highly recommend try him.
Very professional and warm.
Very friendly very quick and very helpful. Open to discussion and intelligent. Highly recommended. Prescribed me medication which genuinely helped me.
very pleased with him
If you want psychiatric help go elsewhere. He simply only saw me for 5 minutes and shooed me away. Not one word was said that was helpful. I don't know how he treats his regular patients but I never seeing him again.
Dr Shershow was kind, patient, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend him. The office staff was great as well.
Nice doc, listened and believed me about my own experience of mental health, willing to try new things and concerned about my health first.
Very polite and professional -- saw me right away, was very kind, and pointed me in the right direction.
Really great dr.
Highly recommended!!!
If all you need is a quick prescription, this is the right place. Very smart and friendly but did not ask a lot of questions and the consultation didn't last more than 10 min.
He seemed not to listen to me and each time he would not want to spend more than 5 min with me.
Horrible bedside manner. Doesn't show genuine concern about patients. Seems to only care about getting paid.
I always truly enjoy my appointments with Dr. Shershow and never have to wait more than 5 minutes to see him. He's an extremely courteous, professional person who takes the time to figure out what works best for me & discusses my progress. I always walk away from the appointments feeling uplifted and I've made a lot of progress since I've started seeing him! 100% recommended!!
Highly recommended.
I thought he was very kind, personable and knowledgable.
Great person. Approachable, knowledgeable, supportive.
The doctor was absolutely wonderful. He answered all my questions and was interested in getting to know me personally to understand how to help me. I felt very comfortable and will definitely return again. His secretary is the sweetest woman I've met in a doctor's office. The entire experience made me feel great.
He is very personable, helpful, and straightforward. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
I've been to this doctor several times and think the doc is knowledgeable and nice, but it should be noted that this is essentially a "med. check" and your appointment slot is for 10-15 minutes. Additionally, if you call, the doctor has no idea who you are because he's seeing a different patient every 10-15 minutes of the day. As long as you are okay with this, you will be okay with this doctor.
He was a very nice man, helpful and he gave me the assurances I needed. I was just left wondering if he was simply agreeing with me or if that was his professional opinion.
Perfect.
He was rude when I showed up to my appointment early he slammed the door in my face.... I won't recommend this doctor to anyone.
Dr. Shershow was terrific. Had my first appointment this week, and it went very well. He asks the right questions to find treatment that will work best for you.
100% professional, great guy...couldn't speak more highly of him
He is awful. He diesn't listen to you and only cares about taking your money.
Great!
Although I have only seen Dr. Shershow once, he has already instilled confidence in me regarding his knowledge of conditions and treatments. I felt comfortable speaking with him, and feel he really took the time to get to know me and understand my concerns.
Knowledgeable, professional, caring, and focused. His experience and dedication to his patients is clear.
I found Dr. Shershow to be thorough, concerned, gracious and informative. I really appreciate the time he spent with me and I feel like the advice he gave will be extremely beneficial. I highly recommend him.
Extremely personable, kind, and professional!
Just had my first appointment, great experience. I especially liked that he talked about different "cognitive styles" instead of illness or disorders. He was very open and clear about everything.
Horrible Horrible Horrible Experience. Avoid this doctor at ALL costs.
Save yourself the time and find another doctor. Extremely rude and unprofessional. He can't wait to get you out of his office.
the doc was brusque and mean. he couldn't get me out of his office fast enough.
He is ok for writing out prescriptions but not if you want insight into your condition or are looking for a more involved psychologist. He always seems in a rush. The one time I had an emergency at work and could not make it I called him (albeit a little late because I was frazzled) to let him know and he sounded angry and hung up on me. I wonder if perhaps he is just used to writing prescriptions for people and not concerned with their mental state or feelings.
Quick to follow up with me for my new prescription. Great doctor.
Dr.Shershow is an excellent Doctor, friendly, amicable, and professional-he answered all my questions and was very helpful.
Save yourself the time and find another doctor. It's time to retire for this doctor. Worst psychiatrist ever!!!!!
Very good. The doctor listened to my concerns enestly and suggested appropriate advice.
Two trips to Dr. Shershow and both have been great experiences. From waiting to the actual appointment, only good things to say!
Doesn't seem interested in your well being. Only interested in himself. By far the worst doctor I've ever seen. EVER.
I thought he was excellent and very helpful and personable.
Best psychiatrist I've been to in the city. He actually listens to you and care about his patients. This man is genuinely here to help you, I wouldn't see anyone else.
Dr. Shershow can never remember my name or why I am there to see him. I always have to wait for him when I've made an appointment and he keeps over charging me. He seems like a nice guy but he is very unorganized and disheveled. He has good intentions but a poor professional manner.
Excellent and highly recommended.
He's very professional!
My experience with this Dr has been unfulfilling, to put it nicely. 100% of the time it seemed as if I knew more than he did. He was unorganized for our appointments (did not notate ANY detailed information from our meetings besides the actual medication he prescribed.. He even wrote the wrong date on an Rx once in which I had to come back to the office and have it rewritten) When I would ask very specific questions about side-effects regarding certain medications, he would actually open his book of drug statistics and read them to me! I should have just asked him where to get the book and save the money/trouble to see him (I suppose this is why he charges so little.. big plus for the people who just need someone to write them an Rx and not neccesarily need a quality Dr with knowledge and answers). All I have to leave you with, is please COMPARE this Dr with another one before you waste any more money or time and possibly gamble with your future/health. Writing bad reviews does not help me in the slightest, in fact its a risk. I hope this helps.
Another successful visit with the doc.
It was my first visit and I wasnt sure what to expect. He put me at ease and made the conversation easy.
Dr. S is professional and seems responsible and well informed. His appointments are quick and easy. He is not someone seeking to gain a comprehensive understanding of his patient's history and current stressors.
He was very professional on time and welcoming. I am hard to talk to and was afraid I would forget information but he asked the right questions. He made it clear that if I needed someone to talk to I should see a therapist as he was a doctor mainly for medication maitenance. Even though I thought he should be an all in one doctor and it would be a waste of time seeing one for meds and one to talk to he does ask questions when giving the meds such as how I am doing feeling and changes in my mood. He made it easy to talk to him and the only shocking thing was him puting me on the same meds that my previous doctor did with out checking first because I could have been a real nut case but I dont know maybe he did. Other then that he seemed like a really good doctor.
knowledgeable, thoughtful doctor. modern office and practice. great experience.
Very warm, educated, and informative. Made me feel very comfortable.
Although I have only had two appointments thus far, Dr. Shershow has proven to be both extremely knowledgable and accommodating to my individual needs. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a new doctor.
He was courteous and took the time to ask me some questions. His receptionist was also very friendly.
Dr. Shershow is very easy to talk to and is highly qualified
Dr. Shershow is very caring, He puts his patients first.
Dr. Shershow was friendly and easy to talk. He was happy to answer all my questions and made me feel a lot more comfortable. His receptionist was very helpful and sweet.
Great! He was very knowledgeable and understanding
He's a great doctor and seems very thorough. I tend to be very hard to talk to but he knew what questions to ask to get me to open up. Definitely will be a repeat patient.
Very easy to talk to and also tells you what he is thinking which is nice. Feel very comfortable with him!
Caring, but quick and to the point.
Prompt, courteous, and professional. Quickly address my issues and recommended a course of action that could be life changing.
Very amiable guy, trusted me to know my own body and my account of my history with different meds, made his recommendations convincingly without being overbearing or scary about it.
he is a great listener!
Very thoughtful, intelligent.
Dr. Shershow made me feel extremely comfortable. He really listens and wants to help. There was no wait time and his assistant is extremely pleasant.
Was very helpful. Will return
Excellent doctor, very professional and courteous. Would highly recommend him to anyone looking to get help
I suppose you could do worse (although not much worse) in terms of a psychiatrist who takes insurance. At least you're in the neighborhood to go shopping at the Time Warner center afterwards.
Dr. Shershow was not helpful at my appointment and kept saying that he was a doctor that prescribed medication, that I didn't seem to need medication, and that he didn't know why I was there. After explaining my concerns, he suggested I wait it out and see if I feel better and concluded the appointment. Very unsatisfactory.
Was a very thoughtful doc. Too many psychiatrists don't listen when you speak but dr shershow takes the extra time. Great experience.
Dr. Shershow was great. I felt comfortable with him right away. I was unable to get a babysitter for my 8 month old son, and brought him with me. The doctor didn't mind at all and made us feel right at home.
Very professional, warm and courteous. Gave clear advice and answered all my questions.
Doctor did not seem interested in helping me at all. He just seemed concerned with providing me with medication if that is what I needed/wanted until he deduced that I had an alcohol problem after less than 8 minutes of talking and said I should go to AA. At least he didn't condone giving a possible substance abuser more substances... That is fine but I wish he had actually provided some therapy rather than writing me off as an alcoholic after 8minutes, telling me to go to AA and then concluding our meeting... Didn't deal with ANYTHING I wanted to talk about and I do not think he wished to hear me talk about anything that bothered me...he made it clear that he specializes in prescribing medication for those that need it and suggested that if I wanted therapy I should seek a psychologist in addition to AA. Was looking forward to this appointment all week and was insanely disappointed, I would only recommend if you seek medication, def DO NOT RECOMMEND if you want an actual therapist to help you work through your concerns.
The appointment was very quick and to the point. I waited 30 minutes but they said that it wasn't usually like that. I would go back to him.
My experience was wonderful.
Dr. Shershow was great. Got straight to the point which I appreciate and likes to see his patients often to keep up to date with their progress and adjust meds as needed. His receptionist was also great an the location is fantastic.
Excellent, very nice and adapts appointment to your needs.
He's great. Very professional, thorough, efficient. Lucky to find him!
Highly recommended, good listener, and asks purposeful questions, and gives good feedback.
Warm, understanding and very helpful. I would recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Shershow is kind, easy to talk to you, smart, and professional. I absolutely plan to continue to see him and highly recommend him.
The doctor had a kind, non-judgmental manner.
I was in my last year of college. He spoke to me for less than 10 minutes and told me that he could not help me and gave me no support or suggestions on where I should look instead. He was rude and when I started crying because of how he was speaking to me, he kicked me out of his office.
Don't bother making an appt unless you have over an hour free after the scheduled time. Waited 50 minutes for an appt because the doctor was "running late". He couldn't bother to muster an apology. "These things happen" was the most he could bring himself to say. A person with an appt a full 45 minutes before mine came in after me and was still seen before me. Awful experience.
Personable, knowledgeable, friendly, trustworthy, recommended
He is a very sincere person.
Dr. Shershow is excellent. I've dabbled in finding a psychiatrist before, and he is the first one I've really felt comfortable with. He is easy to talk to and never makes me feel awkward for what I'm going through. We simply work together on how I can get better. I highly recommend him!
I appreciated his efforts to not pump me full of medicicine. However, i felt like he is used to patients who are already medicated so he wasnt much help to me as someone who was a first timer. Good to know im not crazy, sucks that i wasted my time.
Dr. Shershow was friendly and professional. He put me at ease immediately and even squeezed me in when I arrived late for the appointment.
Very understanding and considerate of patient's time and needs! Such a lucky find on ZocDoc.
Professional and friendly
Dr. Shershow was very attentive. I would definitely recommend him.
Have had multiple visits with the doctor. Things were generally rushed & I was self diagnosed (even had suggested what medication I should have). He had already determined that not only would I start the medication whose dosage was to be increased weekly but that he'll most likely add another medication to supplement it (without actually diagnosing me). Also, for the record, he had to consult a book to read up on the medication he prescribed.
Dr. Shershow was terrific. Smart, clearly knew his stuff, didn't seem rushed, and was interested in forming a genuine connection. Absolutely recommended!
I had an excellent initial visit with Dr. Shershow. He really listened to what I said and responded both compassionately and professionally. I would recommend him to anyone seeking treatment.
Excellent! Dr. Shershow is friendly, straightforward, and takes the time to explain options and answer questions.
Another great visit!
He was professional and inviting. Also was very supportive and I feel like he is an advocate for my well being and is very honest.
He is fantastic and his assistant/receptionist is super friendly and nice. I almost wish I had more problems so I could see him more often!
Very kind and knowledgable doctor!
The Dr. Was more personal than most. For the initial consultation he listened intently and made suggestions for what type of medication you require. Please keep in mind that this dr just manages medications and does not participate in therapy.
Very kind and thoughtful doctor. He understands that prescribing the right meds is also an art and not only a science.
Great - look forward to follow up appointments!
Dr. Shershow was professional, direct, and timely. As a first-time patient I was pleased that he spent a full 45 minutes with me, listened patiently, and offered sober advice. Highly recommended.
Great Dr!
Intelligent, thoughtful, insightful, respectful and trustworthy.
Such an insightful, nice & helpful man! Highly recommended
Excellent doctor ... Perfect medication choice ... Careful with selection, dosage, and side effects ...
Dr. Shershow was a great listener and very professional.
Dr Shershow was very friendly and kind and understanding. He is very intelligent and had a great way of explaining things in a comprehensible manner. He gave me the sense that he is willing to work with me in a supportive and flexible manner to figure out what is the best course of treatment.
Highly professional and caring. No ego to feed, or hoops to jump through. Sticks to what works without using patients as experiments. A+
Incredibly kind doctor. I will be back for sure
He always makes me feel comfortable from the minute i enter the office to the minute I leave. He is professional and really makes me think he cares about my problems.
Another good experience!
Dr. Shershow is very personable and kind. He listens and makes you feel right at home.
I thought it was terrible. The guy didn't seem to listen to what I was saying. He wasn't very friendly and tried to push me off to another doctor (since I wasn't there to receive medication of any kind). I was able to somewhat understand this, however he said he'd provide me with good recommendations so I could make another appointment...after not hearing from him within a week, I left a message asking for him to get back to me... never heard back from him. Doesn't seem interested in your well being. Only interested in himself. By far the worst doctor I've ever seen. EVER.
He was friendly and made me feel so comfortable. I don't normally feel comfortable around doctors especially ones that might tell me I am crazy, but he made me feel welcome. I was happy to talk to him.
Very, very sweet. Responds to emails IMMEDIATELY!
Pleasant office visit with clear ezplanations.
Great doctor!
Dr.Shershow seemed quite nice at first, he picked up when I called to make the appointment for the next day, however when I got there he had completely forgotten about our appointment and had gone out to lunch. Giving him the benefit of the doubt I waited almost 2 hours for him to return. The first session was pleasant enough, even though at that time he was out of network for my insurance. He prescribed my previous medications and asked me to come back in 2 months. The problem is Dr.Shershow can not properly write prescriptions. He miswrote a script for me, and it left me without my anxiety medication for over 3 months. I called him to discuss the matter, which lead to his telling me that I was filling the same prescriptions from different doctors, which was not true and verified by my pharmacy. He then promised to get me a new script for said medication which he never did. I also asked him if he could recommend a psychologist, he said he would look in to it. He never did. Needless to say I'm never going back.
I enthusiastically recommend Dr. Shershow. He has been and is the best doctor for my needs and his practice is extremely streamlined and professional.
A pleasure, thank you for making the trip and appt so easy.
