My visit with Dr. Lau went very smoothy. I was seen almost immediately. In fact, had I not been filling out paperwork, I might have been seen even sooner. It may have been something like 10 minutes from the time I arrived until we were face to face, and I arrived 10 minutes early for my appointment. Once we met, she was professional in every conceivable way, friendly, and thorough. She took a great family history and seemed to appreciate that I brought in all my medications for her to look at (I highly recommend doing this when you're seeing a new physician for the first time, you never know what you might forget). I made a slight joke about pooping at one point (how can you not when you're talking about gastrointestinal problems) and she chuckled a bit. I was relieved (haha) that she very clearly has a healthy sense of humor. Dr. Lau managed time efficiently, but I didn't feel rushed. She listened to and answered every question I had... there were many. For example, I asked if she would write down some treatment plans for a condition I potentially have, which she did. She also wrote down a very detailed list of items I can eat and things to avoid. I was appreciative of her willingness to take the time to do these things. She decided I need to have a procedure soon, which she explained to me in detail, and she made certain I was able to set it up within a few days time. There is a medicine you need to drink before going in for the procedure and the office gave me a coupon for it just in case my insurance coverage was bad. On one hand, I suspect the pharmaceutical company supplied them. On the other hand, I thought it was rather thoughtful to provide something like that to a patient--it shows an understanding of how deplorable health insurance coverage can be. I've only met Dr. Lau once (I will see her again for the procedure next week), but I believe one of her best qualities as a doctor may be that she does not talk down to patients. At least, she didn't talk down to me. Simultaneously she was able to easily illuminate terminology unfamiliar to me. So I'd say all in all it was a great meeting and I can't imagine I'll need to see any other gastroenterologist for the duration of my time in the city unless my initial assessment is incorrect.
