"Doctor Shamani is absolutely amazing! I hate going to the doctors, but the environment was very comfortable and welcoming, and she was very easy to talk to and extremely knowledgeable. This is a personal story but has relevance I promise… Last week I found a bald patch on my head and checked the rest of my scalp and found multiple bald spots. I freaked on and started googling (never google btw) I was absolutely devastated. I diagnosed myself with Alopecia Areata, an extremely rare disease with barely any information, but the pictures of the different cases were terrifying. I hadn't yet picked a primary care physician because I hadn't the time and I hate the going to the doctors. I know it sounds bad but I honestly won't even have health insurance if the law didn’t require it. So I got the cheapest insurance I could find through obama care and told myself I would never even use it. I actually got on Zoc Doc to see what dermatologist would except my insurance so I could make the soonest appointment possible. I was trilled to find a doctor the very next day. So I woke up at 8 am and drove all the way to La Jolla from El Cajon to find out that my insurance wasn't actually accepted there. Annoyed that I drove 40 minutes out of my way, I sat in my car and tried searching and calling other doctors and got rejection after rejection. No doctor took Blue Shield through Covered California. I googled until my phone died and then I drove back home to my laptop. From there I went through my insurances "list of Dermatologist who would take my insurance" and none of them would accept the insurance. I was referred to the Alopecia Areate Foundation who gave me a list of dermatologist who specializes in my rare disease. (mind you I didn’t even know if this is what I had) I had already called majority of them and was willing to give them a try. Most didn't take my insurance and the others wouldn't give an appointment for 6 months and also didn't guarantee insurance would cover treatment because they consider it "cosmetic". Cosmetic?! I am a 23 year old girl with bald patches all over my scalp. Alopecia Areata is a autoimmune DISEASE where the white blood cells attack the hair follicle. I'm not just trying to get thicker hair. Anyway after calling over 40 doctors offices, the last women I spoke with could hear the devastation in my voice and gave me some advice. After I told her I had spent the last 6 hours calling dermatologists, she recommended seeing a physician who could possibly refer me to a dermatologist with an urgent request to get me a sooner appointment. She explained that although I don’t need a referral, it could only help me be seen sooner. The search was back on. This time around instead of trying to get the best doctor I was just desperate to find someone as soon as possible. I didn't know how long it took for my hair to get as bad as it was and I didn't want to wait around for it to get any worse, not to mention the emotional tole of not knowing what is wrong with me. At this point it was 4:30. I was back on Zoc Doc and found an appointment with doctor Shamani at 5. I didn't think this was actually possible and not to mention my stupid insurance but I called anyways. They gave me an appointment right away. I walked in, tears in my eyes, exhausted and extremely hopeful. The guy at the front desk was awesome. He was very easy to talk to, hilarious, and very helpful. I told him all about my day and he immediately offered to help me. I told him I was mostly there for a referral to a dermatologist. He sat at his desk and started to research dermatologist who accepted my insurance. He said the insurance industry was extremely tricky but he knows all about it and wanted to help. He assured me Dr. Shamani is very smart and to not be surprised she might actually be able to help. He said she surprises him every day by all the information she knows and all the things she can do. Shorty after Dr. Shamani saw me. She knew right away what I had and ironically enough he had the exact same thing happen to her. Of all the doctors in the world what are the odds. Alopecia Areata is so rare only 1.7% of the population have it and there is barely any research out there about it. She assured me that the treatment is very simple and effective and to trust her because she had done it herself. I was released to hear she would treat me. I thought I wouldn't be treated until December and who knows how bad it will be by than. She also helped me with other concerns and did her best for me to not spend to much out of pocket. She expressed how she does’nt believe that people should have to pay for treatment because we pay insurance every month and everyone deserves to live a healthy life without having to break the bank. I know hair loss is not the end of the world but when you are a young girl it is devastating. She was extremely understanding. I was so embarrassed to cry but she hugged me and told I was beautiful and not to worry. She guaranteed me I was going to be fine and that my stress would only make it worse. Dr. Shamani is not only a well educated doctor who specializes in everything from dermatology, cosmetology, and is even a obgyn, she is an amazing, understanding, compassionate person. I know this is a longgg comment (and I never write anything unless it is a requirement for school) but I hope people read this and see how Dr. Shamani has really turned around this extremely emotional scary situation and made me feel comfortable and trusting in her knowledge that I will be okay. I wanted to thank her from the bottom of my heart, and sharing my story is the only way I know how. I know her work speaks for its self but if you have not found the right doctor, you should come see Dr. Shamani. "
