Is it ok to eat your placenta?
what exactly does it do for you?
Eating your placenta is something you really should not consider doing and I recommend that you speak with your OB/GYN regarding this. This is because not only is it unsafe, it should not be the focus after you have a baby. There are some cultures in which they do eat the placenta after birth, but there is no medical or nutritional reason to do this. However, in other cultures it is considered a form of cannibalism. If you have your baby in a hospital under the care of an OB/GYN, then this will not be possible because the placenta is discarded immediately, or sent down to pathology for examination if needed. There will be no way for you to be able to store this piece of tissue safely in this setting. Some people choose to have home births, and I suppose if this was a part of your culture and you really wanted to undertake this, that it could be considered in this setting. However, as I said above, it does nothing for you and therefore is something that you should probably just forget about. Please discuss this further with your OB/GYN.
