Is there an age minimum to have rhinoplasty?
I am 17 and want to do this.
Rhinoplasty is an elective procedure. It is performed to change the cosmetic and aesthetic appearance of the nose or to improve the function of the nose. It is usually performed by an ear, nose and throat surgeon, a facial plastic surgeon or a general plastic surgeon. Rhinoplasty can be performed at many ages. Most surgeons will perform rhinoplasty after patients have reached full adult growth. It is important to discuss expectations and desires with your physician prior to performing the surgery. It is the discretion of the operative surgeon about the age requirements for surgery. Prior to surgery many surgeons will take preoperative photographs so that a photo review can be performed in which you can discuss the different aspects of your nose that you would like changed. Some physicians have software that can be used to show what different changes of your nose can look like. Photos can be helpful in the postoperative care of patients as well because you can compare preoperative photos and follow the evolving healing of your nose over the next postoperative visits. If you are considering rhinoplasty, it is important to discuss this with your physician. It is important to discuss with them whether or not they will perform the surgery for you.
