But today, you feel it: an aching back. As one of the most common conditions, there\u2019s a whole lot more to it than just an achin\u2019 back. About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2018\/jun\/14\/back-pain-how-to-live-with-one-of-the-worlds-biggest-health-problems\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">540 million people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worldwide experience back pain, and since 1990, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/series\/low-back-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back pain disability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has increased by 50 percent. With any widespread phenomena, myths begin to pepper public perception. But should you really believe everything you hear? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Myth: <\/b>Heavy lifting is always the culprit.<\/p>\n<p><b>Fact:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifting something too heavy is a bad idea, but experts say the way we lift actually matters more than the weight of the object itself. So what\u2019s the correct lifting form? The Mayo Clinic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/adult-health\/multimedia\/back-pain\/sls-20076866\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> crouching with one knee as close to the item as possible (don\u2019t lift from a standing position), raising the object between your legs while still taking a knee, and using your legs to return to a standing position. Don\u2019t twist your torso, and keep your core muscles tight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/Disorders\/Patient-Caregiver-Education\/Fact-Sheets\/Low-Back-Pain-Fact-Sheet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/research\/results\/spotlight\/070411.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of back pain can include arthritis of the spine, disc problems, sprains, sciatica and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, just education on correct lifting techniques alone isn\u2019t the sole fix. \u201cThe only known prevention of lower back pain is usually exercise and education,\u201d says physical therapist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pressroom.usc.edu\/justin-lantz\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Lantz,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0an instructor of clinical physical therapy at the University of Southern California. \u201cWhen you give somebody exercise and education to stay active and lift the right way, it\u2019s better than exercise alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Myth: <\/b>Bed rest is the perfect treatment.<\/p>\n<p><b>Fact: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While your doctor will often ask you to be gentle with your back, staying in bed for a few days can actually slow the healing process or work against you. \u201cYour muscles can atrophy in as much as 48 hours with bed rest,\u201d says Lantz. In fact, continuing to exercise as directed by your doctor increases the chances of a quick recovery. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14734329\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involving workers with back pain found that those who exercised during their recovery period took 58 days on average to return to work, while those who didn\u2019t took 87 days. Actually, exercise is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4934575\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best thing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you can do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Myth: <\/b>Massage is required.<\/p>\n<p><b>Fact: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While massage is very helpful in some cases \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/research\/results\/spotlight\/070411.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have found that massage therapy helped with pain reduction and increased mobility in people with chronic lower back pain \u2014 experts aren\u2019t exactly sure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it may work or who may get the most out of massage, nor does it serve as a long-term solution. It\u2019s also not the cheapest option for treatment. Talk it over with your doctor before hopping on the massage table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, seeking the aid of a chiropractor can also relieve pain and improve function, meaning you can go about your day-to-day tasks easier, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2616395\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Myth: <\/b>You can\u2019t stretch too much.<\/p>\n<p><b>Fact: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stretching muscles in the back, legs and hips definitely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4934575\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mobility and decreases muscle stiffness, but if you\u2019re feeling pain, that\u2019s a sign you should not perform those movements. \u201cSome people take the advice to remain active and they go quite the opposite way,\u201d Lantz explains. \u201cThen you have the person who goes out and gets a gym membership and pushes through the pain and that can make it worse also.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/science-and-health\/2017\/8\/4\/15929484\/chronic-back-pain-treatment-mainstream-vs-alternative\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taken with<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> strength training and aerobic exercise, stretching rounds out an effective trio for relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Myth: <\/b>You\u2019re too young for back pain.<\/p>\n<p><b>Fact: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, age impacts overall psychology and can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5395891\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lead to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back pain in older adults. However, lower back pain in kids and teens is increasingly more common, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2017\/01\/170130111014.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2017.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLower back pain is extremely common symptom among all age groups, children to the elderly,\u201d Lantz says. \u201cUsually everyone experiences back pain at some point in their life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, if you sit too much and don\u2019t get enough exercise, you\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/Disorders\/Patient-Caregiver-Education\/Fact-Sheets\/Low-Back-Pain-Fact-Sheet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to experience back pain, which is why doctors stress the importance of a healthy diet and workout routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Myth: <\/b>You should get a new mattress.<\/p>\n<p><b>Fact: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it may seem intuitive to point to your bed as the reason for your discomfort, getting a new one might not make a difference. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK263383\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2014 asked patients with lower back pain to rate their comfort or discomfort when sleeping on a waterbed mattress, a foam mattress and a firm mattress and found that the hard mattress was only slightly more likely to result in worse outcomes. Furthermore, they had no recommendations on which type of bed would be best for relieving pain. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to say a soft bed causes this,\u201d Lantz explains. \u201cI\u2019ve had patients come in with soft beds and hard beds.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Myth: <\/b>You need surgery.<\/p>\n<p><b>Fact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Most non-specific back pain (that is, not due to a fracture, sprain or other injury) goes away on its own. Even if you have a herniated disc, it\u2019s possible to not even feel pain, let alone need an MRI, Lantz says: \u201cNot all herniated discs need surgery unless you have red flag symptoms,\u201d like tingling in one or both legs.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Ready to book a doctor&#8217;s appointment?
