Finally, I had an explanation for my temperamental skin. I couldn\u2019t wait to share my <em>aha<\/em> diagnosis with, well, anyone who\u2019d pretend to care. But first, I wanted to understand what a fragrance-free life looked (and smelled) like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When a\u00a0doctor told me I had an extra, defunct muscle compressing my carpal tunnel and recommended surgery to fix my hand, I wondered if I should shop around for another opinion before going under the knife. But I wasn\u2019t sure how, so under I went.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first time I saw the terms \u201cpre-authorization\u201d and \u201cpre-existing condition\u201d in a letter from an insurance company, I felt overwhelmed by the jargon being used to justify the charges I couldn\u2019t afford. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone has patient experiences; those are a few of mine. Hi, I&#8217;m Theresa, editor of\u00a0<em>The Paper Gown.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we all know, being a patient doesn\u2019t begin or end in the exam room.
