All my usual prescriptions were already on file, but I paused to consider whether I really<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">needed to itemize every single supplement in my medicine cabinet. Did it matter that I took the occasional probiotic or cranberry extract, that I was semi-regularly taking vitamin D or that I\u2019d recently popped a melatonin during a bout of sleeplessness? \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer: It probably mattered. But I let laziness prevail as I handed in my forms with a blank space after \u201cother medications.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My long<\/span>\u00a0mental\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list of supplements felt absurd to me, but I\u2019m not an anomaly. Seventy percent of adults between the ages of 18 and 34 use supplements, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crnusa.org\/newsroom\/supplement-use-among-younger-adult-generations-contributes-boost-overall-usage-2016-more\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to a 2016 survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Council for Responsible Nutrition. That\u2019s up from 65 percent in 2015. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials in particular <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefiscaltimes.com\/Articles\/2014\/07\/14\/Millennials-Embrace-Alternative-Medicine-32-Billion-Business\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are embracing alternative medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whether or not it\u2019s entirely rooted in science. Amy Gorin, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amydgorin.com\/about-amy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dietitian nutritionist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says a growing number of her clients are curious about the benefits of supplements like probiotics and omega-3s for preventive reasons. Whether they discuss those supplements with their primary care doctors is another question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey might be embarrassed about having a long list of supplements,\u201d Gorin says, \u201cor they may feel worried that the physician may not agree with the patient\u2019s need for a certain one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, Gorin says it\u2019s important to be forthcoming about the supplements you\u2019re taking, even if you think your daily multivitamin is no big deal or you\u2019d rather not chit-chat with your PCP about your CBD gummies. \u201cI would err on the side of caution and always disclose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not convinced? Here are a few reasons to be open and honest the next time you\u2019re updating your paperwork in the waiting room.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Supplements can cause adverse drug interactions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most important reasons to be candid about your supplements is to help your doctor identify potentially dangerous drug interactions. Herbal supplements may seem innocuous, but many have drug interactions worth knowing about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The herb fenugreek, for example, can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/vitamins\/ai\/ingredientmono-733\/fenugreek\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adversely affect diabetes medications and anticoagulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Calcium supplements may decrease absorption <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3135835\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when taken with medication for osteoporosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3976951\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the anticoagulant warfarin was shown to interact negatively with a slew of common herbal supplements, including cranberry, chamomile and grapefruit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplements can also decrease the effectiveness of your medications. If you add a green tea extract to your regimen and then your doctor prescribes Ambien for insomnia, the caffeine in the green tea might counteract the sleep-inducing effects of the Ambien. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, drug interactions can even be life-threatening. \u201cThere actually are fatalities associated with people taking St. John\u2019s wort especially and having organ transplants rejected, and the patient ultimately dies because of that,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/grants\/contact\/dhopp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D. Craig Hopp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, deputy director of the division of extramural research at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should also discuss your supplements with your anesthesiologist before undergoing any surgery or medical procedure, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asahq.org\/whensecondscount\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/asa_supplements-anesthesia_final.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Society of Anesthesiologists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Garlic, ginkgo and ginseng, for instance, can increase the risk of bleeding with anesthesia, and sleep and anxiety aids like valerian and kava can increase or prolong the effects of anesthesia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>You could be getting too much of a good thing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you start your day with a supplement cocktail, it\u2019s easy to overdo it inadvertently; you could be consuming too much of a particular vitamin, mineral or herb. That excess can lead to minor (but still unpleasant) side effects, like nausea from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/guide\/effects-of-taking-too-many-vitamins#1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too much zinc or vitamin C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or more serious consequences like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/expert-answers\/vitamin-d-toxicity\/faq-20058108\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D toxicity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High quantities of supplements can also skew blood tests. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/medicaldevices\/safety\/alertsandnotices\/ucm586505.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA recently warned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that high doses of biotin, also known as vitamin B7\u2014 a vitamin commonly found in hair, skin and nail growth supplements, multivitamins and prenatal vitamins \u2014 can botch the results of certain diagnostic tests. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Biotin-HealthProfessional\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA has reported at least one known fatality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after a patient\u2019s high biotin levels led to a false low result during a test for troponin, a biomarker that helps diagnose heart attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u201cNatural\u201d doesn\u2019t always mean \u201cbenign\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many patients think of supplements as harmless add-ons that promote wellness rather than \u201creal\u201d medications, Hopp says. That mindset often leads people to underestimate the impact of the pills or tinctures they\u2019re using.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think people assume these things are safe, if not benign, and that they\u2019re not really medicine,\u201d Hopp says. &#8220;They don\u2019t appreciate the significance of why they should divulge this information to their doctors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All products, even ones labeled \u201cnatural\u201d or those that come from plants, have the potential to cause irritation, Hopp says. Products in the daisy family,\u00a0<\/span>such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/health\/chamomile\/ataglance.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/health\/chamomile\/ataglance.htm&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1533758983074000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHuDo_rl_3-4q2jkqnODPek9Xxbrw\">chamomile<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/health\/butterbur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/health\/butterbur&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1533758983074000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEsFnM7A043KmU66nh11-hWO_-Kxw\">butterbur<\/a>, have a particularly high propensity to cause allergic reactions in people with certain plant sensitivities.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not only oral medications that fall under the umbrella of \u201csupplements.\u201d You\u2019ll sometimes find supplements in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/HealthInformation\/DS_WhatYouNeedToKnow.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy bars, teas or other drinks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Hopp says to be careful with<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any products you apply topically, like essential oils or CBD lotions and creams. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naha.org\/explore-aromatherapy\/safety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cautions that some essential oils should be diluted prior to application to avoid skin reactions. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bringing up supplements in the exam room<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With around 30,000 different supplements on the market, Hopp says it\u2019s unlikely that your doctor will have an encyclopedic knowledge of every nut oil, flavonoid and botanical extract. But your doctor should be familiar with some of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/research\/statistics\/NHIS\/2012\/natural-products\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and be able to point you in the right direction for more information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can do research on your own with the help of the NCIH\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/Health\/HerbListApp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HerbList app<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has a searchable database of popular herbal supplements, including detailed information about drug interactions, side effects and each herb\u2019s effectiveness. You can also look up potential interactions in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/naturaldatabase.therapeuticresearch.com\/(X(1)S(s1olsqjrr5v54b45nhpxb255))\/home.aspx?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Medicines Comprehensive Database<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/drug_interactions.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs Interactions Checker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Drugs.com.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next time you go the doctor, Hopp suggests bringing your supplements along. (Alternatively, if you have an overflowing medicine cabinet like me, snap photos on your phone of each supplement label.) That way, your doctor can see exactly what you\u2019re taking and in what quantities. It might feel like overkill to dump out a tote bag of supplements in the exam room, but the more information you can offer your provider, the better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou never know what information is going to be important,\u201d Hopp says. \u201cDisclosing all the information that you can when you go to your doctor might save your life one day.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor&#8217;s appointment?
