{"id":17747,"date":"2018-09-24T10:01:28","date_gmt":"2018-09-24T15:01:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=17747"},"modified":"2023-03-03T15:09:32","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T20:09:32","slug":"an-rx-for-yoga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/healthcare-trends\/an-rx-for-yoga\/","title":{"rendered":"An Rx for Yoga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few months ago, my husband\u2019s old herniated disk injury<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flared up, and the shooting pain in his leg made it difficult to walk. He was sure he\u2019d need another operation on his spine, but his doctor proposed a less invasive approach. She prescribed a new medication for his nerve pain, told him to take a break from five-mile runs and suggested he try yoga. Despite being skeptical that yoga would relieve his pain, he was open to the suggestion. The problem was he wasn\u2019t sure how to \u201ctry yoga.\u201d Was he supposed to do a certain type for back injuries? And how often?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoga arrived <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yogajournal.com\/yoga-101\/7-forgotten-early-yoga-teachers-in-america#gid=ci0210a5b3c00026b3&amp;pid=deslippe--yj--princess-ganesa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the U.S.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the turn of the 20th century. Though initially embraced as a countercultural practice, it eventually emerged in mainstream fitness. Today, a growing body of research depicts yoga as a valuable supplement to Western therapies for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29241287\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including chronic pain, hypertension<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and depression. In addition to its apparent health benefits, yoga is notable for what it lacks: dangerous side effects, high abuse potential and drug interactions. But doctors aren\u2019t always familiar enough with the practice to offer a more specific recommendation than \u201ctry yoga.\u201d When someone is taking up yoga for a medical reason, the specifics matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Daks\u2019s rheumatoid arthritis reemerged when she was 18. The now 27-year-old psychology graduate student had been diagnosed with the autoimmune condition<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a child, but she spent most of her teenage years in remission. With the disease back in her life, Daks was desperate for new ways to mitigate the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debilitating pain that comes with it. \u201cI was barely able to get out of bed or open the refrigerator,\u201d she said. \u201cI felt like I was 100 years old in an 18-year-old body.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her rheumatologist suggested yoga to complement her cocktail of prescription meds, but couldn\u2019t tell her how to select the right class. In the first class Daks tried, she was told to do <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yogajournal.com\/poses\/child-s-pose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">child\u2019s pose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a yoga posture that in its traditional form requires kneeling. The instructor described the pose as \u201crestorative.\u201d For Daks and her tender knee joints, it was excruciating. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She didn\u2019t give up on yoga, but it took Daks five years to find the right practice: a gentle class, where the instructor urges students to listen to their bodies\u2019 pain signals and offers modifications to make poses more accessible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daks\u2019s mounting interest in yoga eventually led her to Steffany Moonaz, a yoga<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instructor and researcher who serves as director of clinical and academic research at the Maryland University of Integrative Health. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To date, studies support the benefits of yoga for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28631003\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25834206\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29225455\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Treatment+of+chronic+insomnia+with+yoga%3A+a+preliminary+study+with+sleep-wake+diaries\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insomnia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Moonaz says yoga is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26116216\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people with these and many other health issues, provided they choose an appropriate, well-designed practice \u2014 that is, a practice like the one Daks eventually found, one with poses that can be modified to accommodate the limitations of individual students. Unfortunately, that doesn\u2019t always happen. The incidence of yoga injuries is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28958637\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than it should be, which Moonaz attributes at least in part to the varied levels of training and experience across instructors. There\u2019s also the fact that classes called \u201cyoga\u201d vary widely, from gentle practices to ones that would be challenging for people with serious health concerns. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with injuries, chronic conditions and other physical limitations should probably steer clear of the highly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/society\/woman-risks-her-life-for-yoga-sparking-internet-outrage\/324174\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagrammable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> classes frequented by the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.canyon-pt.com\/yoga\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">headstands-on-a-canyon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> crowd. Instead, they should look for classes where instructors supply props, such as supportive blocks and bolsters, and help students find comfortable and pain-free versions of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/yogaforhealthyaging.blogspot.com\/2013\/01\/featured-pose-supported-childs-pose.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">standard poses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also a good idea to ask your doctor or physical therapist if you should avoid any specific<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical positions or movements, says Dr. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baxterbell.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baxter Bell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a yoga therapist and former family physician who cofounded the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/yogaforhealthyaging.blogspot.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoga for Healthy Aging. He notes that doctors unfamiliar with yoga might have no idea what postures are likely to come up in class, so don\u2019t expect them to tell you the actual names of poses to avoid. What they can offer is helpful safety guidelines, such as whether a herniated disk means you should completely avoid forward bends or whether it\u2019s okay to stretch an injured hamstring yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any practice undertaken for healing purposes, Moonaz says, should also include more than just physical yoga poses, or asanas. Breathing practices, or pranayama, and meditation should be part of the equation too. Practicing the physical poses along with pranayama and meditation turn yoga into a powerful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.plos.org\/neuroanthropology\/2014\/05\/19\/connecting-mind-body-yoga-embodied-cognition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mind-body<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> practice. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/understanding-anxiety\/related-illnesses\/other-related-conditions\/stress\/mind-body-practices\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress relief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provided by mind-body practices is particularly important for people managing an illness or pain. That\u2019s because the psychological toll of having a medical condition can worsen someone\u2019s perception of their physical symptoms and make them feel even worse. On the other hand, a yoga practice designed to reduce stress could diminish the intensity of those physical symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also yoga practices and even entire studios geared toward students with various ailments. In her own work, Moonaz has focused on arthritis.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She coauthored the forthcoming book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arthritis.yoga\/Book\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoga Therapy for Arthritis<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and created a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsarthritis.org\/patient-corner\/disease-management\/yoga-for-arthritis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help arthritic students navigate a variety of popular and therapeutically beneficial styles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of those, Iyengar yoga, is widely offered throughout the U.S. and has been frequently used in studies. It focuses on<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">precise physical alignments. It\u2019s also a form of yoga that, because of its use of props, can be easily adapted to suit the needs of students with chronic pain or other injuries. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Iyengar instructor, for example, initially took classes in his 20s to overcome a bout of back pain, before eventually leaving his office job to train in the method. A decade later, he teaches at a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/samamkayabackcare.com\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manhattan studio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where all classes are designed with back pain sufferers in mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another teacher, now in her 40s, began taking Iyengar classes decades ago to keep herself strong and injury-free while working a physically demanding job. Five years ago, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called mixed connective tissue disease. Her medical condition led her to Moonaz\u2019s work on arthritis for yoga, as well as research on the benefits of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27386811\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aquatic exercise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for patients with joint pain. While <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beecontentyoga.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her classes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are still influenced by her Iyengar studies, she now specializes in teaching a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aquakriyayoga.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pool-based form of yoga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good way to look for a suitable yoga class is to search the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yogaalliance.org\/Directory?Type=Teacher\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoga Alliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a professional organization for yoga instructors. After locating a teacher in your area, you can further refine your results by the type of class the teacher specializes in, such as \u201cgentle yoga,\u201d implying a slower-paced class, or \u201calignment-focused,\u201d suggesting the teacher will provide instruction on precise physical alignment, often with the use of props.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to finding an appropriate yoga class, patients with serious medical conditions might consider working one on one with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yogatherapy.health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yoga therapist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is an emerging <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yogajournal.com\/lifestyle\/western-doctors-prescribing-yoga-therapy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare field<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> akin to physical therapy. Yoga therapists are professionals with extensive training who use yoga techniques to help patients with specific medical concerns. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, many people find value in the social support provided by group classes. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daks, for instance, says a primary benefit of the Yoga Therapy for Arthritis training she attended was the opportunity to meet other young people with arthritis, a disease often associated with aging. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My husband, on the other hand, preferred a more solitary, home-based practice. As a trained yoga teacher, I was able to offer him the instruction that other patients told to \u201ctry yoga\u201d might not receive. I encouraged him to try the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/static-content.springer.com\/esm\/art%3A10.1186%2F1745-6215-15-67\/MediaObjects\/13063_2013_1959_MOESM1_ESM.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back to Health\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> protocol developed at Boston Medical Center, designed specifically for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28631003\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patients with back conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His doctor was right: His condition did improve, without surgery.
