Most people feel better within a few days, but there are steps you should take (and a few things to avoid) to ensure that you heal completely. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We talked with experts to learn about the latest approaches to post-op care and pain management following a tooth extraction. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Why would I need a tooth extraction? Should I go to a dentist or an oral surgeon?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might need a tooth extracted for a number of reasons, including decay, gum disease, cavities, an orthodontic procedure or wisdom teeth removal, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myoms.org\/assets\/uploads\/documents\/Ebook_Wisdom_Teeth_R.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common procedure for teens and 20-somethings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/wisdom-teeth-removal-necessary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but many people do, especially if they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/wisdom-teeth\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20373808\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impacted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or could cause alignment issues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Procedurally, there can be differences between removing wisdom teeth and non-wisdom teeth, according to Dr. Dave Clemens, president of the Wisconsin Dental Association and a practicing dentist in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExtractions are all done pretty much in the same manner, but usually it\u2019s the lower wisdom teeth that cause trouble,\u201d Clemens says. \u201cThey\u2019re trapped in a confined space, so getting them out is difficult with tissue in the way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a simple extraction, your dentist can often perform the procedure. For a more complicated extraction \u2014 like removing the lower wisdom teeth \u2014 your dentist will likely refer you to an oral surgeon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral surgeons typically use general anesthesia, so you won\u2019t be awake during the procedure. Dentists generally use local anesthesia, Clemens says, so you\u2019ll be awake and able to feel some pressure, but the tooth and the surrounding area will be numb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17761 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/doctor-1229x262.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"726\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/doctor.png 2178w, https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/doctor-720x154.png 720w, https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/doctor-360x77.png 360w, https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/doctor-300x64.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2178px) 100vw, 2178px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Will I need stitches?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It depends. If your dentist or oral surgeon cuts into the gum tissue, you may need stitches. Your provider will let you know if the stitches will dissolve on their own or if you need to schedule a follow-up appointment to have them removed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some extractions, you might not need stitches at all. In fact, opting not<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to suture (close the wound) is increasingly common, Clemens says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLeaving the wound a bit open seems to work just as well as suturing,\u201d he says. \u201cThat way, you\u2019re not worried about scarring, and by leaving it open, it allows any pressure to be relieved.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has also shown that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3267907\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternatives to stitches, like tissue glue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can be just as effective as suturing and less likely to cause complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What should I do to promote healing?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the extraction, a blood clot will form where the tooth (or teeth) used to be. Your first priority is to let the blood clot sit undisturbed, Clemens says. For the first 30 to 45 minutes after the procedure, use gauze to apply firm pressure at the extraction site. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat allows the blood to gel up and form a blood clot,\u201d Clemens says. \u201cOnce it\u2019s formed, you don\u2019t want to disturb it.\u201d That\u2019s why the stereotypical post-op meal consists of soup, ice cream and pudding \u2014 soft foods are less likely than hard foods to disrupt the clot as it forms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first day following surgery, take it easy. It\u2019s normal for bleeding to continue in the first 24 hours, so change out your gauze as needed and hold an ice pack to your jaw to reduce pain and swelling. Don\u2019t partake in any strenuous activities that could increase bleeding, and avoid hard or chewy foods, as well as alcohol and tobacco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnything with alcohol in it can disturb the area and burn it a little bit,\u201d Clemens says. \u201cSmoking is actually much worse, though. It interferes with how the blood vessels form, delays healing and causes more complications.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be careful to avoid direct contact with the extraction site when you\u2019re brushing your teeth and flossing, but don\u2019t skip out on your oral hygiene routine altogether. If you have stitches, take care to avoid disturbing them when you brush.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the first 24 hours, you can begin to gently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dentalhealth.org\/what-to-do-following-an-extraction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rinse with a saltwater solution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25909940\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been shown to help promote healing and reduce complications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But you should continue to avoid vigorous rinsing, drinking from a straw or picking at the extraction site during the first few days. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of people think they\u2019ve got to get in there and help it heal, and really, that\u2019s not a great idea,\u201d Clemens says. \u201cNature does a really nice job if you don\u2019t mess it up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What can I do to manage pain?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you had your wisdom teeth pulled years ago, your post-op memories might be hazy, especially if your provider handed over a prescription for Vicodin on your way out the door. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These days, opioid prescriptions after tooth extractions have dropped dramatically. \u201cThere\u2019s a big push to avoid opiates altogether,\u201d Clemens says. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/drugoverdose\/data\/prescribing.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that prescribing rates for opioids in general have been on the decline since 2012. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNowadays, it\u2019s very common to give people a prescription of overlapping ibuprofen with acetaminophen, or Tylenol,\u201d Clemens says. \u201cIt\u2019s as effective as any narcotic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3414241\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have also shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that preemptively taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen before your procedure can be more effective for reducing pain than taking painkillers afterwards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a complicated procedure, your provider may prescribe a stronger medication. A short-term opioid prescription for three days or less is typically sufficient, according to Dr. Brett L. Ferguson, president of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take prescription painkillers, remember to properly dispose of leftover medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople who are starting to create a dependency will search other people\u2019s medicine cabinets and find their unused opiate drugs,\u201d Clemens says. \u201cYou can help people out by not keeping them in your house.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What complications should I watch out for, and when is it time to call my dentist?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-op complications are usually minor and resolve on their own, but it might take a few days before you bounce back to normal. \u201cMost patients resume normal activities within five days,\u201d Ferguson says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may experience swelling, bleeding, discomfort or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000780.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry socket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which occurs when the blood clot is disturbed or fails to form, exposing the bone and nerves to the air. If you notice a missing blood clot or feel severe pain at the extraction site, call your provider. You may be instructed to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/dry-socket\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20354382\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flush the socket with water from a plastic syringe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to clear out food and debris and promote healing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s normal to be feel some pain after a tooth extraction, there are a few symptoms \u2014 including fever, nausea or severe swelling \u2014 that warrant an immediate call to your dentist or oral surgeon\u2019s office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll of those things can be caused by a reaction to a medication or infection,\u201d Clemens says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that\u2019s the case, your provider will decide whether you should start a course of antibiotics to fight an infection or come back in to be evaluated in person.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a dentist&#8217;s appointment?
