That\u2019s the sell behind noninvasive body contouring, one of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fastest-growing areas of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cosmetic dermatology, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdedge.com\/cutis\/article\/162644\/aesthetic-dermatology\/update-noninvasive-body-contouring-techniques\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cutis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As performed by dermatologists or plastic surgeons, \u201ccontouring\u201d is an umbrella term for a group of nonsurgical procedures that promise to trim fat in a few different ways. They\u2019re getting more popular too: Procedures that focus on fat reduction, like CoolSculpting, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased 7 percent between 2016 and 2017, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticsurgery.org\/documents\/News\/Statistics\/2017\/plastic-surgery-statistics-full-report-2017.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Society of Plastic Surgeons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Procedures for temporary cellulite removal, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/syneron-candela.com\/na\/product\/velashape-iii\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VelaSmooth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, rose 19 percent in the same period. Across the board, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5236497\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found, contouring increased 521 percent between 1997 and 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese companies are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responding to the consumer drive of not wanting to have surgery, which is driven by an irrational fear of general anesthesia,\u201d says Dr. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drmanishshah.com\/Dr-Manish-Shah\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manish H. Shah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a plastic surgeon in Denver<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt\u2019s also the convenience factor of not having to take time off work for recovery.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noninvasive contouring has a few advantages over surgical alternatives like liposuction, such as minimal side effects and, at least in theory, a lower price point. But that doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re the right fix for everyone. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost of the \u2018risks\u2019 of these noninvasive procedures,\u201d says Dr. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/restoresdplasticsurgery.com\/meet-katerina-gallus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katerina Gallus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a plastic surgeon in San Diego, \u201care <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not understanding the requirement for multiple treatments to obtain an impactful result, and the resulting expense.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you fall under the spell of the fat-melting wand, it\u2019s worth understanding what different types of noninvasive procedures can and can\u2019t do. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Body contouring basics<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put simply, noninvasive body contouring techniques use devices that either heat up or freeze fat cells underneath the skin to reduce the appearance of \u201cstubborn fat,\u201d such as so-called bra bulge, love handles and banana rolls, a term for banana-shaped fat pockets right below the buttocks.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heating techniques either use radiofrequency, as with TruSculpt, or high-intensity focused ultrasound. The fat-freezing approach, used by CoolSculpting, is called cryolipolysis. Laser-therapy fat removal also falls under the contouring umbrella, but it works in a slightly different way; the light source shrinks fat cells through a photochemical process rather than a thermal one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once fat cells die from contouring procedures, the body excretes them over a period of two to three months, yielding a smoother appearance in treated areas. Most people require several treatments to achieve desired results, which is why noninvasive procedures can cost as much or more than surgery. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These noninvasive techniques are designed for shaping surfaces and spot fat reduction in specific areas rather than weight loss, according to Dr. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nazarianplasticsurgery.com\/beverly-hills-plastic-surgeon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheila Nazarian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, California. Even with liposuction, she says, patients might not see any weight loss, simply because fat doesn\u2019t weight that much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey\u2019re best for focal reductions of fat,\u201d Shah says, \u201cbut there\u2019s not a lot of destruction of fat cells outside that small zone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most popular fat-reducing technique is freezing, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdedge.com\/edermatologynews\/article\/164937\/aesthetic-dermatology\/study-pits-cryolipolysis-versus-hifu-fat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found to be less painful and more effective than laser therapy or high-intensity focused ultrasound. In addition, older patients with severe skin laxity (i.e., very loose skin) or sun damage aren\u2019t good candidates for HIFU. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Results from laser treatments for body contouring can appear within six weeks after the procedure, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3769994\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but they\u2019re not permanent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, unlike results from radiofrequency and cryolipolysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Everyone asks for CoolSculpting<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The leading brand name in body contouring is CoolSculpting. \u201cIt\u2019s the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 800-pound gorilla in the room that everyone knows about because they have the greatest marketing budget,\u201d Shah says. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely one option, but there are a number of others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CoolSculpting is best for patients who are around their ideal weight and want to get rid of loose skin caused by significant weight loss or aging, Nazarian says. In her practice, often patients will come in asking for CoolSculpting. But if they\u2019re not good candidates for it, Nazarian might steer them toward procedures likely to produce better results, such as a combination of liposuction to remove fat and a radiofrequency technique such as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/inmodemd.com\/technologies\/technologies-bodytite\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BodyTite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to firm up so-called problem areas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatients with significant weight loss will likely need surgery,\u201d she says, because \u201cCoolSculpting can\u2019t do anything about sagging skin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these limitations, CoolSculpting is more popular than ever, says Dr. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/drsteiger.com\/procedures\/coolsculpting\/overview\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob D. Steiger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a plastic surgeon in Boca Raton, Florida. First approved in 2010, CoolSculpting has been around longer and been subject to more research than comparable procedures. The devices used to perform the treatments have also continually improved, Steiger says. CoolSculpting was first geared toward people who essentially had the bodies they wanted, aside from stubborn bulges. But market expansion came with an increased demand for fat reduction from people without fitspo-model physiques. So the company started marketing to them too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTheoretically, you can treat your entire body with CoolSculpting,\u201d he says, \u201cbut it would easily end up costing around $10,000, or much <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticsurgery.org\/cosmetic-procedures\/liposuction\/cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than liposuction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d the average cost of which is about $3,300. Plus, patients won\u2019t see results from CoolSculpting until the body disposes of its dead fat cells, which takes at least six months.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Beyond CoolSculpting<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CoolSculpting is a somewhat hands-off procedure to perform; it uses applicators that are attached to the skin and monitored by machine. Radiofrequency procedures like TruSculpt, however, require doctors to maneuver handheld devices. As a result, they\u2019re more labor-intensive but also more precise, Shah says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like CoolSculpting, Shah says, \u201cRadiofrequency is not for people with obesity. Although it\u2019s used on pretty much anybody, that\u2019s not the way it should be done. It\u2019s meant to achieve small volume losses in patients who are fairly fit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also popular is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sculpsure.com.au\/how-it-works\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SculpSure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a laser technique that heats up and pops fat cells with laser applicator packs applied to the body. The process, which takes around 25 minutes, can be uncomfortable, and patients typically don\u2019t see results for about three months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17869 size-full\" src=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"726\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/body-sculpting.png 2178w, https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/body-sculpting-720x154.png 720w, https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/body-sculpting-360x77.png 360w, https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/body-sculpting-300x64.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2178px) 100vw, 2178px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What the ads may not say<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contouring procedures performed poorly or on the wrong candidates can produce undesirable results, like body indentations, Steiger says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CoolSculpting only reduces fat exactly where the applicator is placed, which is why small body areas, like below the belly button, are a better target than larger areas like the outer thighs. Overzealous fat reduction in one area can make surrounding untreated areas appear a little plumper. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With heating procedures, issues can arise if patients don\u2019t follow orders to drink enough water beforehand. Without proper hydration, Shah says, the heat won\u2019t reach its target and kill the fat cells like it\u2019s supposed to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients also need to understand that if they gain weight, the fat has to go somewhere. It will accumulate in areas surrounding those treated with contouring technologies, but not the treated areas themselves. Because substantial weight gain after treatment can yield a lumpy appearance, these procedures make more sense for people who are likely to stay within their current weight range. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And although it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/06\/180629182037.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some people might get bigger rather than smaller as a result of CoolSculpting: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/plasreconsurg\/Abstract\/2018\/07000\/Treatment_of_Paradoxical_Adipose_Hyperplasia.14.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a cryolipolysis side effect where fat cells in treated areas increase rather than die.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no way to detect who might be susceptible to the condition, and researchers don\u2019t know why it happens, Shah says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, it\u2019s a highly unlikely complication: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve only seen it twice,\u201d Steiger says, \u201cand lipo or excision fixes it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although noninvasive body contouring techniques don\u2019t require surgery, a good plastic surgeon might be best able to help you decide if you need noninvasive or surgical procedures (or both) to achieve desired results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But whether you choose a reputable cosmetic dermatologist or a plastic surgeon, Nazarian says, \u201cyou really have to do your homework.\u201d She advises patients to make sure <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticsurgery.org\/patient-safety?sub=Questions+to+Ask+Your+Plastic+Surgeon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prospective surgeons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abplasticsurgery.org\/ModDefault?section=SurgeonSearch\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">board-certified<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and have hospital<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">privileges (meaning they\u2019re cleared to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/practice-management\/administration\/privileging\/credentialing-privileging-faqs.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perform procedures in a hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u201cA hospital won\u2019t allow you to perform a procedure that\u2019s outside your scope of training,\u201d Nazarian says.
