Unfortunately, it\u2019s not uncommon. The stress of travel, coupled with jet lag, can tax your immune system and make you more susceptible to colds and other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1477893905000918?via%3Dihub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respiratory illnesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A high level of physical activity can put you at risk for sprains, strains and other injuries. Experiences like going on a boat on choppy waters, riding a bus on winding roads and hiking or skiing at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/altitude-sickness#1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high altitudes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.racgp.org.au\/afp\/2017\/june\/travelling-safely-to-places-at-high-altitude-understanding-and-preventing-altitude-illness\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms like<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stomach upset, dizziness and headaches. And if you unwittingly dine on food that contains bacteria, viruses or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stopfoodborneillness.org\/awareness\/what-is-foodborne-illness\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parasites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can develop a food-borne infection. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With domestic travel, you\u2019re vulnerable to diseases that are endemic to the area you\u2019re visiting, says Dr. Lin H. Chen, director of the Harvard-affiliated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountauburnhospital.org\/care-treatment\/travel-medicine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel Medicine Center<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and president-elect of the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.istm.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Society of Travel Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re talking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ick-borne illnesses like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/4-misconceptions-about-lyme-disease\/\">Lyme disease in the Northeast<\/a> and fungal infections such as Valley fever (caused by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fungal\/diseases\/coccidioidomycosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coccidioidomycosis fungus)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Southwest. Serious airborne viruses like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/features\/measles\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">measles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/will-the-measles-crisis-in-the-u-s-be-over-soon\/\">which has made a resurgence<\/a> in New York state and other areas of the country, can make you sick too, if you haven\u2019t been vaccinated or had measles before. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you travel outside the country, the biggest threat is traveler\u2019s diarrhea, due to exposure to different germs and bacterial strains in the food and water. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5825178\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research indicates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that between 6 and 87 percent of people get sick when journeying far from home; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1477893905000918?via%3Dihub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traveler\u2019s diarrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affects more than half of people traveling to northern Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Respiratory infections and mosquito or tick bites, rashes and fevers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0095454318300496\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are also common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention is the best medicine, and it starts with getting any needed vaccinations before traveling, washing your hands well and often, and taking motion sickness remedies if you&#8217;re prone to queasiness. But if you do fall ill during a trip, there are strategies you can rely on.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Here\u2019s advice to minimize the amount of time you spend out of commission once your Out of Office reply is turned on. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Turn to your first aid kit<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a good idea to be prepared for a cold, headache and muscle aches and pains by tucking some familiar remedies in your suitcase. Start with acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil), an anti-diarrheal like loperamide (Imodium A-D) or bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol), and an antacid like Tums, which contains calcium carbonate. If you have seasonal allergies, you\u2019ll want to bring along a newer-generation antihistamine (Allegra, Claritin, Zyrtec or Xyzal); you can also use a topical form of the older antihistamine diphenhydramine (Benadryl) to calm down an allergic skin reaction, bug bites or poison ivy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your first aid kit should also include bandages, a topical antibiotic and hydrocortisone if you\u2019re going somewhere isolated<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThe more remote and the farther away from a city, the bigger your first aid kit should be,\u201d says Chen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Drink lots of clear fluids<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air travel can be dehydrating, so drink plenty of fluids while in flight. If you get traveler\u2019s diarrhea, which can dehydrate you quickly and to a dangerous degree, be sure to \u201cdrink more water than you usually do,\u201d advises<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northshorern.com\/meet-your-advocates\/teri-dreher\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teri Dreher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered nurse and patient advocate for NShore in Chicago. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your gastrointestinal issues are severe, supplement your water with sports\/electrolyte drinks like Gatorade or Pedialyte, which can be found at most pharmacies and convenience stores, or broth. In these instances, \u201cit\u2019s important to replace the lost salts in your body,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/health.usnews.com\/doctors\/dheeraj-taranath-779468\">Dr. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dheeraj Taranath<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, regional medical director at MedExpress Urgent Care in Reading, Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Relax<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most illnesses won\u2019t require a doctor\u2019s care. Unless you have a fever (a sure sign of infection), just take it easy. \u201cAdjust your itinerary to allow more time for additional rest,\u201d Taranath says. \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to take a day to recuperate in your hotel room.\u201d Relax in a warm shower or bath, drink hot tea and nap until you feel better. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re well enough to leave your room, take advantage of your destination without overexerting yourself: Save walking across a city for when you\u2019re feeling better, and take a guided tour on a bus or boat or see a local show instead. \u201cListen to your body and take a break when you get tired,\u201d advises Chen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Stick to a bland diet<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re having stomach problems, refrain from eating difficult-to-digest foods like fatty meats, greasy or spicy foods, citrus fruits, dairy products and alcohol, which can irritate the GI tract. Stick to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/the_brat_diet\/article.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BRAT diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: bananas, rice (white), applesauce and toast for 24 hours, and then slowly resume a more balanced diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Take probiotics<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probiotic supplements, available at drugstores and supermarkets, help your gut combat potentially harmful bacteria that you might encounter when traveling. \u201cDouble up on your probiotics if you get sick,\u201d Dreher says, to limit the duration and severity of your illness. She also recommends beginning a course of probiotics two weeks before you travel to increase your resistance to germs. This is a somewhat controversial strategy, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4764790\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there\u2019s research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to support the use of probiotics: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1477893905000918?via%3Dihub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 12 studies, for instance, found that probiotics containing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saccharomyces boulardii <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or a mixture of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lactobacillus acidophilus <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bifidobacterium bifidum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be safe and effective in preventing traveler\u2019s diarrhea. Reputable probiotic brands for digestive health, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerlab.com\/reviews\/Probiotic-Supplements-and-Kombucha-Drinks\/probiotics\/#whatitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Consumer Lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, include Align, Culturelle, MegaFood MegaFlora, Renew Life Ultimate Flora and Vita Miracle Ultra 30<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Start medicating at home<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you get food poisoning or traveler\u2019s diarrhea and develop a fever, start taking Imodium or Pepto-Bismol. If you\u2019re really sick, take an antibiotic \u2014 you can ask your doctor for a \u201cjust in case\u201d antibiotic prior to leaving the country. If you haven\u2019t brought one with you, go to a local clinic for a prescription. In some countries, you can even buy ciprofloxacin (Cipro) or other antibiotics over the counter at drugstores. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed?term=%22Annals+of+internal+medicine%22%5BJour%5D+AND+106%5Bvolume%5D+AND+216%5Bpage%5D+AND+1987%5Bpdat%5D&amp;cmd=detailssearch\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ciprofloxacin reduced sick time from 81 hours to 29 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience symptoms including headaches, nausea, lightheadedness and disrupted sleep when you travel to high-altitude destinations \u2014 8,000 feet above sea level or higher \u2014 consider asking your doctor about preventive treatments for altitude sickness. Depending on the severity of your symptoms and how much they interfere with your ability to enjoy your vacation, a doctor might prescribe a short course of medication to speed up the process of acclimating to the oxygen-thin air. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27763796\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most commonly used drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for altitude sickness is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30839503\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetazolamide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If your symptoms are more minor, you might be advised just to take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30419226\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and hydrate. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Go to urgent care<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re really sick with a cold or flu, call your health insurance provider to help you find an urgent care center. \u201cFor non-life-threatening issues, urgent care facilities offer convenient, extended hours and shorter waits,\u201d Taranath says, compared to emergency rooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Go to an ER<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience symptoms such as progressive weakness or signs of a stroke or heart attack (shortness of breath, chest pain), seek medical attention immediately. Likewise, if you develop a fever while you\u2019re traveling in a developing country, such as after swimming in a river or petting a wild animal, or are in a region with known outbreaks of infections like Ebola, see a doctor sooner rather than later. \u201cFever is one of the signs of a serious infection like malaria,\u201d says Chen, \u201cand it can progress rapidly and be life-threatening.\u201d Also head to an ER if you\u2019ve been sick for a few days and aren\u2019t getting better, or if you sprain an ankle or knee and can\u2019t walk without pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen in doubt, do the responsible thing and go to the hospital,\u201d agrees Dreher. Start with a call to your health insurance provider for preapproval, if possible, but don\u2019t delay treatment based on financial fears. \u201cEven if you don\u2019t have travelers insurance, the cost for treatment may not be a big deal,\u201d she says. \u201cMany European nations have socialized medical care, for instance. The bill for a two- to three-day hospital stay may be a couple hundred dollars, not several thousand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always travel with a photocopy of the information page from your passport, your medications in their original bottles and one sheet of paper listing your medications, surgeries, allergies and doctors\u2019 contact information. You\u2019ll need to provide as much medical information to the hospital as possible if you\u2019re admitted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be aware of your patient rights. \u201cNo matter where you are, you\u2019re entitled to be treated by someone who speaks your language,\u201d Dreher says. You can also refuse medical advice. \u201cIf you feel you\u2019re being price-gouged, respectfully decline treatment,\u201d she adds. \u201cIf you\u2019re starting to feel better, be polite and say, \u2018We\u2019re going to go home now.\u2019 It\u2019s your right to leave if the doctor or staff is doing something that makes you uncomfortable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Go home<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travelers insurance can help get you home in case of a medical emergency. \u201cI recommend that travelers consider purchasing travel insurance, especially if they\u2019re going to an exotic location, but I don\u2019t push it on people,\u201d says Chen. \u201cWe all have different levels of tolerance for potential problems depending on our health status.\u201d There are also different levels of insurance you can purchase, from coverage for lost luggage and flight delays all the way up to medical insurance and medical evacuation insurance, which can be required if you\u2019re mountain climbing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome policies can grease the wheels to get you back quickly,\u201d Dreher says. But don\u2019t travel if you\u2019re more than moderately sick \u2014 and be aware that some airlines refuse to allow people who are noticeably ill to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Travel\/10-things-kicked-off-plane\/story?id=14674939%20%20https:\/\/answers.yahoo.com\/question\/index;_ylt=AwrE1xJqPNNc8bwApxVXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEycjl0YTJoBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM2BHZ0aWQDQjY4MzNfMQRzZWMDc3I-?qid=20080627132154AAPtxD7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">board a plane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cPeople do not do well on planes when they\u2019re seriously ill,\u201d Dreher says. \u201cAltitude makes a moderately sick person sicker. Get well enough to travel before you fly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor&#8217;s appointment?
