She was achy and exhausted for no apparent reason. She\u2019d also put on a noticeable amount of weight, which struck her as odd; though she was a college student, she hadn\u2019t changed her diet or lifestyle, and her physique had held steady for years. She turned to her family\u2019s trusted primary care doctor for an answer. It took her seven years to get one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koplinka found the doctor&#8217;s responses to her concerns patronizing. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tired? She was probably stressed from studying and needed more sleep; he recommended over-the-counter iron supplements. Achy? She ought to stretch, maybe take up yoga. For her sudden, inexplicable weight gain, the doctor prescribed exercise. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koplinka hoped her doctor would connect the dots between her symptoms, but she soon realized he wasn\u2019t taking them, or her, seriously. After a half-dozen appointments, she gave up. \u201cI got angry,\u201d she told me<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koplinka\u2019s experience is a textbook example of the diagnostic minefield<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that too many women face in the exam room. Ample research suggests women are more likely than men to have their pain downplayed or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/17\/opinion\/sunday\/women-and-the-treatment-of-pain.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dismissed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by doctors. Historically, male patients were the default subjects in clinical research, and much of what doctors learn today still overwhelmingly reflects male physiology. The ways in which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/2019\/4\/17\/18308466\/invisible-women-pain-gender-data-gap-caroline-criado-perez\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women\u2019s bodies present differently<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are sometimes poorly understood or just explained away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public health data emphasizes how often women get the short end of the diagnostic stick. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/CIRCULATIONAHA.117.031650\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> led by Yale University public health researchers found that women were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/CIRCULATIONAHA.117.031650\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more likely to be misdiagnosed after a heart attack. Among other factors at play, heart attacks don&#8217;t always manifest the same way in men and women. Not all women report chest pain, considered the hallmark symptom of a heart attack. They\u2019re also more likely to report \u201catypical\u201d symptoms in addition to chest pain, such as nausea and shortness of breath. And even when women do seek care for the same cardiac symptoms as men, doctors are still less likely to suspect heart disease. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More broadly, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2019\/03\/190311103059.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Danish medical data revealed that it took four years longer for women to receive a diagnosis than men \u2014 across 770 different diseases. (And Denmark is among the highest-ranking nations for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/the-global-gender-gap-report-2018\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender equity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For women of color and others in marginalized communities, the care disparity \u201cbegins before they ever set foot in a hospital (if they ever do),\u201d says health literacy advisor Abby Norman, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask Me About My Uterus: A Quest to Make Doctors Believe in Women\u2019s Pain.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, Norman urges patients to be proactive about getting the care they deserve. While there\u2019s no tried-and-true \u201cscript\u201d for talking to doctors, there are tips and tools women can use to prevent doctors from ignoring or trivializing their symptoms. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Keep a record of when, where and how your symptoms occur<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While communicating symptoms, go into as much detail as possible. <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a diary or use a symptom tracker,\u201d Norman advises. \u201cIf you tell a doctor you have abdominal or pelvic pain, that\u2019s really vague. But if you tell them you have pelvic pain that\u2019s worse when you have sex, or have a bowel movement, and that your periods are very heavy, that information will help them start to narrow things down.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Be confident<\/b>. Norman concedes that this isn\u2019t always easy, especially when you\u2019re feeling sick. But even a pre-appointment rehearsal of \u201crelaying your symptoms in a clear, succinct way\u201d can be a game-changer. It\u2019s also okay to bring notes \u2014 another reason to document your symptoms.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Bring a buddy. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you have a supportive friend or family member who is able to join you and you\u2019d like to be there, having that support<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be very helpful,\u201d says Norman. A plus-one can lend moral support. But more than that, it can strengthen your case to have someone who spends a lot of time with you say they\u2019ve witnessed your symptoms firsthand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Look into assistance from a patient advocate.\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany hospitals or community health centers have dedicated people who work with patients on a number of things: helping coordinate care and appointments, helping with finances and insurance,\u201d Norman says. These patient advocates can lighten the overall burden of a prolonged medical issue and make it easier to focus on the treatment process.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Repeat what your doctor told you about your condition or treatment plan before leaving the appointment. <\/b>Summarize the doctor\u2019s key points in your own words and ask for clarification if it seems like you missed anything important.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Actually read your post-visit summary. <\/b>After your appointment, you\u2019ll either get an hard-copy summary of what happened or an updated note in your online patient portal. As soon as that information is available, check it. \u201cEven \u2018slight\u2019 medical errors can have major consequences,\u201d Norman warns. Make sure your info is accurate and up to date, and let medical staff know right away if it isn&#8217;t.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>If you are seeing doctors in different healthcare systems, states or even countries, request physical copies of your records and bring them with you. <\/b>Even if you\u2019ve asked a doctor in one location to send your records to a physician somewhere else, you don\u2019t want to risk wasting valuable time in the event that something gets lost in the shuffle. \u201cHaving physical copies, including discs with any imaging tests you\u2019ve had done that are important to your care, can be really helpful for doctors because that way they have everything right in hand when you\u2019re there with them in the office,\u201d Norman says.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koplinka, now 26 and a medical social worker outside New York City, has advice of her own: \u201cIf your doctor isn\u2019t listening to you, continue to do your own research and find doctors who will listen. It\u2019s not easy, but it\u2019s definitely worth it.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it happens, her story has a happy ending. On the recommendation of a colleague, she saw a new doctor this year, after\u00a0 largely avoiding professional medical care since college. During<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the initial consultation, Koplinka explained that she\u2019d been struggling with the same set of symptoms for years and was close to giving up on the possibility of relief. But unlike her first doctor, this one listened to her concerns and pledged to work toward a solution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He took my blood and called me himself with the results,\u201d she says. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After an ultrasound, Koplinka got the concrete answer she\u2019d been hoping for: She has <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hashimoto\u2019s disease, an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid that mostly affects women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koplinka now takes medication to regulate her thyroid and works with an endocrinologist to manage her ongoing treatment. \u201cI feel more energized, more like myself,\u201d she says. \u201cI finally trust a medical provider again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor&#8217;s appointment?
