{"id":18515,"date":"2020-01-22T12:00:18","date_gmt":"2020-01-22T17:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=18515"},"modified":"2026-02-05T04:31:35","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T09:31:35","slug":"5-women-who-dont-have-hysteria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/5-women-who-dont-have-hysteria\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Women Who Don&#8217;t Have Hysteria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three male doctors told me the same thing: My ovaries weren\u2019t making me sick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the seven years I\u2019ve spent living with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/my-multiple-sclerosis-workout-diary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple sclerosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I\u2019ve become carefully attuned to what &#8220;normal&#8221; feels like for my body. I knew that excruciating groin pain, discharge, bleeding and bouts of constipation weren\u2019t normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years earlier, I&#8217;d seen a doctor who suggested I had polycystic ovary syndrome, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/polycystic-ovary-syndrome\">PCOS<\/a>. Though I&#8217;d never been formally diagnosed with the condition, it seemed like a plausible explanation for my symptoms. My doctors didn&#8217;t agree.\u00a0<\/span>One of them suggested I was anxious because I had &#8220;a big vacation coming up.&#8221; Another said I might have injured my hip exercising.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two months later, an ER doctor diagnosed me with PCOS. Not vacation jitters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the days of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3480686\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;female hysteria&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> diagnoses are supposedly far behind us, I&#8217;m far from the only woman who&#8217;s gone through the experience of seeking out care only to have her symptoms diminished and her mental health questioned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Too frequently I&#8217;ve had<\/span> [female]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> patients referred to me with physiological symptoms who were assumed to be experiencing this pain due to anxiety,\u201d says Stephanie Woodrow, a certified mental health clinician. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5838121\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical gender bias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also well-documented in research, with one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/115\/34\/8569\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluding that &#8220;women are less likely than men to survive traumatic health episodes&#8221; for this very reason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are stories from five women who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/patient-stories\/the-difficulty-of-getting-diagnosed-and-treated-for-more-than-one-chronic-illness\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fought to get the right diagnosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If I hadn&#8217;t advocated for myself, I&#8217;m not sure what would have happened.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Rebecca, 35, Virginia Beach, Virginia<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Diagnosed with<\/strong>: Somatic symptom disorder due to stress<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Actually had<\/strong>: An abscessed tooth<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe pain on the right side of Rebecca\u2019s face made her feel like she was \u201cbeing electrocuted 20\u201330 times per minute.&#8221; It was just stress, according to her dentist. A neurologist came up with a more specific diagnosis, &#8220;atypical facial pain due to stress,\u201d and suggested therapy. Soon after, she began taking multiple antidepressants, plus a medication for neuralgia and anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New symptoms piled up: Rebecca developed bad headaches, nerve damage in her right eye and hearing loss in her right ear. Four months after she\u2019d first seen her dentist, a neurosurgeon specializing in facial pain requested an MRI and diagnosed Rebecca with &#8220;trigeminal neuralgia\u201d caused by a tooth infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In total, Rebecca saw two primary care physicians, one chiropractor (25 visits), two urgent care physicians, two dentists (five visits total), three neurologists, one eye doctor, one oral surgeon, one endodontist, one neurosurgeon and two therapists \u2014 and spent one night in the ER \u2014 before she got a proper diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If I hadn&#8217;t advocated for myself,&#8221; she says, &#8220;I&#8217;m not sure what would have happened.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If you have a medical condition that is undiagnosed, no amount of over-the-counter remedies are going to resolve that.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisa, 58, New York City<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Diagnosed with<\/strong>: Pelvic pain<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Actually had<\/strong>: Endometriosis<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisa had been dealing with severe cramping for more than 30 years, ever since she\u2019d &#8220;started having regular cycles.&#8221; When she described the problem to doctors, their go-to answer was Advil or something comparable. Other recommendations included exercise, dietary changes and being \u201cless indulgent and weak.\u201d \u201cThere was always an implication that I was making too big a deal out of my symptoms,&#8221; Lisa says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A friend suggested Lisa visit a specialist to investigate the pain. A \u201ccomplete workup\u201d pointed to fibroids, and the doctor recommended their removal. What was supposed to be a simple procedure, Lisa says, turned into complex surgery on account of \u201cthe worst case of endometriosis&#8221; the doctor had ever seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisa finally has relief from the pain she lived with for her entire adult life. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If you have a medical condition that is undiagnosed,&#8221; she says, &#8220;no amount of over-the-counter remedies are going to resolve that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She still s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">truggles to trust doctors fully. She spent too long fighting to be believed.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;No one should have to dress up for the ER&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Grace, 32, Western Pennsylvania<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Diagnosed with<\/strong>: Stress, fainting, attention-seeking<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Actually had<\/strong>: Sick sinus syndrome \u2014 \u201cMy heart was stopping and I needed a pacemaker\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grace had developed extreme fatigue, along with cold hands and feet. She\u2019d also begun fainting. One time, she says, it happened at a friend\u2019s house: &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was in junky clothes with my hair in a messy bun because I was in the middle of helping a friend move.&#8221; At the ER, a doctor commented on her appearance, admonishing her for not &#8220;cleaning herself up.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;No one should have to dress up for the ER,&#8221; she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors initially told Grace she was probably just anxious. The terms \u201chysterical\u201d and \u201cattention-seeking\u201d came up too.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all, it took three years, five cardiologists, multiple neurologists and countless ER trips for Grace to be diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome, a rare heart-rhythm disorder. During that time, Grace\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family went into debt seeking medical opinions. She also sustained numerous head injuries from fainting, leaving her with memory loss and other permanent neurological impairments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If I had been taken seriously from the start,\u201d Grace says, \u201cI would be in a very different place today.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;All treatments have been intense and exhausting.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Disnie, 25, New York City<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Diagnosed with<\/strong>: Stress, anxiety, stomatitis and a viral infection<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Actually had<\/strong>: Pemphigus vulgaris\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disnie struggled to eat after developing sores in her mouth, which were accompanied by extreme exhaustion. Her doctor said that &#8220;stress, anxiety and lack of rest\u201d had made her susceptible to viral infection, and advised her to consult a psychiatrist or psychologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the span of four months, Disnie saw approximately 30\u201340 doctors before a dermatologist diagnosed her with a rare autoimmune disease called Pemphigus Vulgaris and prescribed medication to manage the resulting pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disnie says the doctors she saw didn\u2019t expect a woman in her 20s to have the condition, since it usually affects people over 40. Still, she says, \u201cI was sad to express my pain to the doctors and to be told it\u2019s not anything to worry about.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I never gave up hope that I would find a way to not only survive, but thrive.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Kim, 46, Phoenix, Arizona<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Diagnosed with:<\/strong> Hemorrhoids<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Actually had<\/strong>: Stage-4 colorectal cancer<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 35, Kim went to see her doctor about constipation. Colon cancer runs in her family; her dad had been diagnosed at 46. Her doctor dismissed her concerns, saying she was \u201ctoo young for cancer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eleven months and 10 doctors later, Kim went to urgent care for a persistent cough. A chest X-ray revealed lesions in her lungs and breast. After the discovery of rectal, lung and liver tumors, she was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer and given six months to live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After another oncologist gave Kim a better prognosis, she began prescribed chemotherapy and radiation right away. &#8220;I never gave up hope that I would find a way to not only survive, but thrive,&#8221; Kim says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She proceeded to endure 75 rounds of chemotherapy and go under the knife 16 times.
