While every autoimmune disorder is distinct, many share overlapping features. One common issue is heightened sensitivity to weather.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperature shifts \u2014 bouts of extreme hot and cold, as well as abrupt changes in either direction \u2014 can exacerbate symptoms of numerous autoimmune conditions, including<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/article-abstract\/601203\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperthyroidism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/ijcd\/2014\/816729\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lupus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and multiple sclerosis. These symptom \u201cflare-ups\u201d are usually temporary, but they can still be a drag.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s tricky is that temperature changes can trigger different responses in people with the same autoimmune disorder. \u201cIt\u2019s important to recognize that there\u2019s interindividual variability in how symptoms of an autoimmune disease are affected by different weather patterns,\u201d says Dr.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lilbdoc\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lili Barsky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a hospitalist and urgent care physician. \u201cThere is also a lot of subjectivity associated with how patients report flares.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, there are ways to mitigate the severity of weather-induced flare-ups. Here\u2019s an overview of how and why heat and cold exacerbate different autoimmune disorders, and what patients can do to prepare for temperature shifts.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How are autoimmune disorders diagnosed?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have identified <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/000816.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 80 different<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> autoimmune diseases \u2014 common ones include Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus. All told, more than 23.5 million Americane are dealing with autoimmune disorders, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/research-training\/accelerating-medicines-partnership-amp\/autoimmune-immune-mediated-diseases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institutes of Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The road to diagnosis <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/autoimmune-diseases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be long and difficult<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With so many different diseases \u2014 many of which share overlapping symptoms \u2014 it can be hard for doctors to pinpoint an exact diagnosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can help your care team by sharing a thorough inventory of your family health history and keeping a detailed record of your symptoms. Many people work with multiple providers across specialties, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rheumatology.org\/rheumatologist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rheumatologists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with training in treating autoimmune conditions, before arriving at a diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Which autoimmune conditions are exacerbated by temperature changes, and how?<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Arthritis<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Trigger<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Temperature and weather changes, generally<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis causes joint pain and swelling. Some research suggests weather affects arthritis symptoms, particularly in patients with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/can-the-weather-really-worsen-arthritis-pain-201511208661\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">osteoarthritis of the hip<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most common type.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcmusculoskeletdisord.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/1471-2474-15-66\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of arthritis patients, about two-thirds reported<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9225595\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased pain and stiffness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in high humidity and cold, wet weather. An<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/pain\/Abstract\/1995\/05000\/Weather_changes_and_pain__perceived_influence_of.18.aspx\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earlier study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from 1995, found that younger people with arthritis were more sensitive to temperature-induced pain changes than older ones. And<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amjmed.com\/article\/S0002-9343(06)01026-6\/pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2007 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that changes in air pressure and temperature were associated with arthritic knee pain severity. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3996041\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevailing belief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that temperature intensifies arthritis pain by changing the composition of synovial fluid, which lubricates joints for ease of movement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Trigger<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: High and low temperatures, respectively<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your thyroid, an endocrine gland in your neck, secretes hormones into your bloodstream to help regulate your metabolism. (Your metabolism and body temperature are directly related.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperthyroidism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have overactive thyroids (meaning they over-secrete thyroid hormones), while those with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypothyroidism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have under-active thyroids. Both conditions make it hard to maintain a normal body temperature, in opposite ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperthyroidism leaves you prone to overheating. High temperatures heighten this sensitivity, spurring<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/article-abstract\/601203\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as stress, shaky hands and excessive sweating.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/winter-cold-thyroid-tips-3233153\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes you sensitive to cold, even in summer. Frigid temps can worsen symptoms like depression and fatigue, and compound the challenge of warming up your body, especially your extremities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re taking medication to treat your thyroid condition, it could help reduce your temperature sensitivity, although it may not completely alleviate your symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>Lupus<\/i><\/h3>\n<h3>Trigger<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Heat and sunlight<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lupus targets the joints and skin, and internal organs including kidneys and lungs. It can also cause cognitive issues.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lupus.org\/resources\/what-causes-lupus\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many different factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are known to contribute to the condition, from genetics to hormones. Other factors, like viruses and ultraviolet light, can cause symptoms to flare up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s not much research on the impact of temperature on lupus, but it&#8217;s been reported that weather changes, particularly heat spikes, can cause pain and inflammation. A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nexusmedianews.com\/worsening-weather-could-make-life-miserable-for-lupus-patients-5ba70f60cef5\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2019 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found an association between increased Lupus symptoms and changes in weather or air quality, such as intense heat or cold, high humidity, wind and severe air pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond heat itself, excessive UV exposure can<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3539182\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trigger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rashes, tingling and fatigue in people with lupus. (And even if it doesn&#8217;t seem like a sunny day outside, UV rays can slip through the clouds.) &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3539182\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photosensitivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or sensitivity of the skin to the sun, is a feature of lupus,\u201d says Barsky. \u201cIt can also be a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33552178\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect of certain anti-inflammatory medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taken for this autoimmune disease.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>Multiple sclerosis<\/i><\/h3>\n<h3>Triggers<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Hot and cold temperatures\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1555415517308127\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is characterized by damage to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002261.htm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">myelin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a fatty substance that insulates nerve fibers in the central nervous system. Damaged myelin makes it hard for the nervous system to send signals, causing issues such as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalmssociety.org\/Symptoms-Diagnosis\/MS-Symptoms\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle pain, weakness and numbness, double vision, impaired mobility and coordination, difficulty processing information and fatigue.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I&#8217;ve been told to think of damaged myelin like exposed electrical wire: The plastic coating is broken, leaving the wires prone to short-circuiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat is the most common temperature trigger for those with MS. In fact, in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mstrust.org.uk\/a-z\/hot-bath-test\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19th and 20th centuries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, doctors often diagnosed MS based on \u201ca<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7057586\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hot bath test.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d When patients exhibited worsening neurological symptoms<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/368139\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during a hot bath<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MS was presumed. More recently, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6205043\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested that 60 to 80% of MS patients have heat sensitivity, technically called Uhthoff&#8217;s phenomenon. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6205043\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in body temperature of less than a degree can exacerbate symptoms.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But some MS patients, myself included, are more sensitive to cold. About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6205043\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15% of MS patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience cold sensitivity, which can cause both sensory and cognitive symptoms (including vertigo, numbness, and vision problems, among others) to flare up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts are still trying to figure out exactly why heat and cold trigger MS symptoms. At a basic level, they believe abrupt temperature shifts<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mymsaa.org\/ms-information\/overview\/process-symptoms\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MS patients&#8217; already-damaged nerve pathways.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, these effects are usually temporary and unlikely to cause permanent damage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>Raynaud\u2019s syndrome<\/i><\/h3>\n<h3>Trigger<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Extreme temperatures<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.versusarthritis.org\/about-arthritis\/conditions\/raynauds-phenomenon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raynaud&#8217;s syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a condition where arteries narrow when blood vessels contract, resulting in numbness, pain and discoloration in the extremities. Typically, a person\u2019s toes, fingers or nose will turn blue or white.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few different things, including stress, can activate symptoms. But Barsky says extreme cold is the most common trigger. Raynaud&#8217;s can also surface in the summer, indicating that the condition might respond to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/2397198319826467\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temperature fluctuations in general<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raynaud\u2019s can develop as a standalone condition. But, in some cases, it occurs as a result of another underlying disease. Lupus is one associated disorder. Another is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.circulationfoundation.org.uk\/help-advice\/other-vascular-information\/raynauds-systemic-sclerosis\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scleroderma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a connective tissue disorder that causes hardening of the skin. As many as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/8979-scleroderma-an-overview#:~:text=Approximately%2085%25%20to%2095%25%20of,Raynaud's%20phenomenon%20will%20develop%20scleroderma.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">85% of<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scleroderma patients also have<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/8979-scleroderma-an-overview#:~:text=Approximately%2085%25%20to%2095%25%20of,Raynaud's%20phenomenon%20will%20develop%20scleroderma.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raynaud&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is also characterized by extreme heat sensitivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>Sj\u00f6gren&#8217;s syndrome<\/i><\/h3>\n<h3>Trigger<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: High and low temperatures<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rheumatology.org\/I-Am-A\/Patient-Caregiver\/Diseases-Conditions\/Sjogrens-Syndrome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sj\u00f6gren&#8217;s syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causes dryness in the tear ducts and salivary glands. The disease can also affect other parts of the body, causing pain, swelling, rashes and irritation, fatigue and weakness. About half the time, it occurs alongside<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjogrens.org\/understanding-sjogrens\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other autoimmune conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or scleroderma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barsky points to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/prm\/2020\/5763080\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing that both extreme heat and cold often affect<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12424971\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sj\u00f6gren&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Experts aren&#8217;t sure why people with Sj\u00f6gren&#8217;s have temperature sensitivities, but Barsky points to a few possible explanations. One popular but unsubstantiated theory, she says, is that decreased barometric pressure can cause joints to swell. Another is that Vitamin D and humidity might also trigger symptoms, but Barsky says studies exploring this idea have been inconclusive. With any autoimmune condition, it&#8217;s important to develop coping techniques for symptom flare-ups.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What can you do if heat is a trigger?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your symptoms flare up in hot weather, Dr.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/profile\/194560-julia-rachel-blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julia Blank,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a family medicine physician at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, recommends staying hydrated (limit diuretics like alcohol and caffeine), avoiding strenuous outdoor activity in the heat, and wearing cool and breathable clothing. Also, she says, &#8220;Check pollen counts and air quality alerts before heading outdoors, and consider staying indoors with windows closed if pollen counts are high or air quality is poor,&#8221; as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30959217\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies have linked air pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to autoimmune inflammation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have an autoimmune condition and get overheated and need to cool down, Dr.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunrisepractices.com\/doctors\/phyid-185-dr-brian-steingo\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brian Steingo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an expert in multiple sclerosis at the Sunrise Medical Group Florida, recommends taking a cool bath for 20 to 30 minutes. \u201cA cool shower can also help reduce core body temperature following activity or exposure to a hot environment,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do what you can to keep your home cool in the summer. If you don\u2019t have air conditioning, your doctor might be able to prescribe it, and it might be<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/budgeting.thenest.com\/can-deduct-air-conditioning-medically-necessary-24071.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tax deductible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (although there are deduction limits based on income; work with a tax professional to determine if you\u2019re eligible for a deduction). With a doctor\u2019s letter of medical necessity, your AC unit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hsastore.com\/hsa-eligibility-list\/a\/air-conditioner\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be an HSA- or FSA-eligible expense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it depends on your specific situation. Check with your HSA or FSA administrator before paying for air conditioning with your health account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If an autoimmune condition causes you to break out in a rash or experience skin irritation in hot weather, ask your doctor if any topical medication would help relieve your symptoms. They might suggest an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22440-heat-rashprickly-heat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-itch cream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like calamine lotion or topical steroids.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30993303\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some studies have shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> topical CBD oil can help ease skin discomfort from inflammatory diseases. I\u2019ve personally found CBD oil helpful for itching, tingling and hives caused by weather changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What can you do if cold is a trigger?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m in the minority among people with MS; I can usually tolerate heat but cold weather sends nerve pain shooting through my legs. It\u2019s unbearable, and staying warm is one of the only things that helps mitigate the unpleasant sensations, which present as tingling, itching, aching and stabbing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If, like me, cold temperatures are a trigger for your autoimmune condition, it can help to be prepared ahead of time. Simple items like heat pads and hot water bottles are an instant source of warmth and they can often provide immediate pain relief. It&#8217;s also essential to wear multiple layers when you leave home, especially if impaired mobility can happen during flare-ups. Family members sometimes complain that my house is like a sauna in the winter, but cranking up the thermostat is one of the only tools I have to prevent temperature drops from taking a toll on my health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some autoimmune conditions, such as hyperthyroidism, in which cold weather affects hormone levels, a doctor may be able to adjust the dosage of your medication to improve your symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter what, if you have an autoimmune condition and suspect that temperature is a trigger for you, tell your doctor. Describe how your symptoms change in response to temperature. They\u2019ll help you understand what\u2019s happening and come up with a plan to prepare for exposure to triggers and deal with any unavoidable flare ups.
