{"id":19338,"date":"2021-11-10T16:30:01","date_gmt":"2021-11-10T21:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=19338"},"modified":"2023-03-06T11:48:28","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T16:48:28","slug":"is-your-dental-anxiety-something-more-serious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/is-your-dental-anxiety-something-more-serious\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Your Dental Anxiety Something More Serious?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you start sweating at the thought of seeing the dentist, you\u2014like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dentistry.uky.edu\/patient-care\/dental-phobia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> other Americans\u2014might have dental anxiety. But if you start skipping your dental appointments because you can\u2019t stand the thought of being in that chair, you might have dental phobia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A phobia is when your anxiety gets so high that it interferes with your life. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/servlet\/linkout?suffix=null&amp;dbid=8&amp;doi=10.1111%2Fadj.12118&amp;key=17762985\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28478271\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that people with dental phobia, officially known as odontophobia, tend to forego dental treatment, often for years. That can have serious consequences, because oral health is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/5-reasons-gum-health-is-so-important\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connected to overall health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a dentist can often catch problems you\u2019ve missed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A certain amount of dental fear is totally normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThere&#8217;s not a lot of experiences where you&#8217;re in a chair, you can&#8217;t really move, somebody&#8217;s hands are in your mouth and you can&#8217;t even communicate with them,\u201d says Laura Seligman, a psychology professor at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley who researches how to treat dental phobias. \u201cIt&#8217;s pretty typical to have some anxiety about going to the dentist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But whether you have dental fear or a full-blown phobia depends on what you do when you get the reminder that you\u2019re due for your regular checkup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFirst of all, are you going to the dentist?\u201d Seligman says. \u201cIf you&#8217;re not going, or if you&#8217;re coming up with reasons why you don&#8217;t really need to go, that&#8217;s probably a sign that you are moving into dental phobia.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other signs include needing sedation during appointments or experiencing so much stress that you panic far in advance of the appointment. Knowing how to identify when dental anxiety has turned into a dental phobia can help you find the right care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The roots of dental phobia<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching Orin Scrivello inflict pain via drill in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little Shop of Horrors<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is terrifying, but evil dentists on film aren\u2019t the cause of most dental phobias. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/phobias.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that many phobias begin because of an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/manage-dental-anxiety-kids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience in childhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe find that having a really negative, painful dental experience early in your history seems to be important for development of dental fear and phobia,\u201d says Andrew Geers, an experimental psychologist and professor at the University of Toledo who researches dental phobias. When children have bad experiences at the dentist\u2019s office, they may later put off scheduling appointments, cancel their appointments and have more cavities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People also tend to become phobic after experiences where they felt shame or a lack of control. You might feel embarrassed or uncomfortable about the state of your teeth or if you haven\u2019t been to the dentist in a while. Experiencing pain can also lead to a phobia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is going to be some pain at the dentist,\u201d Geers says. \u201cIt is a vulnerable position and it&#8217;s a very sensitive area of the body.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fnhum.2014.00526\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the way we experience and learn from mouth pain is different from the way we experience pain in the rest of the body. Researchers don\u2019t know exactly why, but it seems anxiety is easier to learn when it stems from pain in the mouth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Treating dental phobia<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gold standard for treating phobias is exposure therapy. When people are anxious about something, they tend to avoid it, which makes it harder to go back and face the fear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExposure therapy helps the person start facing the things that they&#8217;re afraid of in a specific way so that they learn new information that is not consistent with their fears,\u201d Seligman says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0887618518301610\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that exposure therapy for dental phobias can work in as little as one session where the patient is slowly exposed to their source of fear, whether that\u2019s opening their mouth for the dentist or facing the dental drill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have also investigated treating dental phobia with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26920573\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virtual reality exposure therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31583708\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smartphone-based exposure treatment.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27022303\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended strategies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for managing dental anxiety include hypnosis, acupuncture, distraction, positive reinforcement, putting on headphones, muscle relaxation and relaxation breathing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the best strategy might be a good old-fashioned conversation with your dentist; talking to your dentist about your fears can help alleviate them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey might be able to work with you to try to ease some of the anxiety,\u201d Geers says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people also like to meet a new dentist before the appointment to get familiar with the environment.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also come up with a specific plan to address your worst fears. If you\u2019re nervous that you\u2019ll be in pain and won&#8217;t be able to communicate to the doctor, tell the dentist that when you raise your hand, that means they need to stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These types of plans may be most useful if you have dental anxiety. If you have dental phobia and basic coping strategies don\u2019t help, consider seeking specialized treatment from an expert.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s just like any other disorder,\u201d Seligman says. \u201cIf you had diabetes I wouldn\u2019t tell you to treat it at home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the consequences of untreated dental phobia can be severe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe see that when people recognize that they have dental phobia, they tend not to get treated,\u201d Geers says.
