So, as we roll into our second pandemic-era flu season \u2014 a period that spans roughly October through May \u2014 you may not know what to expect. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, we cover everything you need to know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The state of the flu-nion<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before diving into the specifics of the 2021-2022 flu season, it\u2019s important to first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-flu-shot\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cover the basics.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The influenza virus comes in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/viruses\/types.htm\">few distinct forms<\/a>. I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nfluenza A and B are the primary types that appear during flu season each year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, strains of the flu are constantly evolving \u2014 which means researchers frequently adapt flu vaccines. They use data from early cases of the flu to predict which strains will be dominant each year, and develop the shot from there. Distribution starts as early as August.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, the vaccine reduces <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/vaccines-work\/vaccineeffect.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an individual\u2019s flu risk by 40-60 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0264410X21005624?dgcid=author\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significantly lessens the chance of being hospitalized or dying from the flu. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0However, it\u2019s common for less than half of Americans to get the shot. (Why? Many<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_briefs\/RB9572.html\">underestimate<\/a> the value of the vaccine and overestimate its potential risks and side effects.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the last three influenza seasons, overall vaccination rates hovered only in the 50th percentile for Americans,\u201d says Dr. Susan Donelan, Medical Director of the Healthcare Epidemiology Department at Stony Brook Medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last winter, despite pretty average vaccination rates, the flu nearly disappeared. During a typical flu season, about a third of people who contract some sort of respiratory virus have the flu. But last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/burden\/index.html\">only 0.2% of respiratory specimens collected in U.S. clinical labs tested positive<\/a> for the flu. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hile researchers found an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article\/66\/10\/1511\/4682599\">8 percent<\/a> of the population gets the flu during moderately serious flu seasons, less than 1 percent had it last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given such a turn of events, can we expect things to be equally chill in the next few months? Well, we can\u2019t ever predict the future \u2014 but unfortunately, experts say many of the signs point to no.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The forecast<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile I don\u2019t have a crystal ball, I think we\u2019re certainly at a higher risk of a difficult influenza season this year compared to last,\u201d Dr. Donelan says. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoshana Fishbein, Communications Director of the nonprofit Families Fighting Flu, echoes her, noting that we\u2019re already seeing more flu activity this fall compared to last year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few reasons driving this likely uptick:\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Normal life is resuming. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With COVID-19 vaccinations now widely available, we\u2019re returning to our pre-pandemic behaviors in many areas. Adults are returning to the office; Kids are returning to school; And international travel is occurring more often. At the same time, we\u2019re also dropping many pandemic-era health precautions. \u201cThe likely reason the flu didn\u2019t spread last year is because of masks and social distancing. Now, people have become complacent,\u201d says Fishbein. Combined, these two factors create conditions that are ripe for an influenza resurgence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>After COVID-19, the flu seems minor. <\/b>COVID-19 has a higher mortality rate than the flu. W<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hile the world shut down for the coronavirus, it\u2019s never been as drastically impacted by the flu (that is, since 1918). After months of pandemic anxiety, many aren\u2019t quite as worried about the flu now that they have their COVID-19 vaccines. \u201cSadly, preliminary data shows that flu vaccinations are lower this year than they were last year,\u201d says Fishbein.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>We have less population-level immunity because of last year\u2019s anomalous season. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a typical year, there are tens of millions of cases of the flu. The general population develops some immunity through exposure to any flu strains circulating. \u201cPeople have lost a year of being exposed and developing some protective immunity,&#8221; says Donelan. &#8220;We need to be prepared for the worst.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all, there\u2019s strong reason to believe we won\u2019t get another year off from influenza. Experts say this is especially concerning given that the COVID-19 pandemic isn\u2019t over quite yet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re still faced with COVID-19 cases, as well as the Delta variant being highly transmissible, \u201d says Donelan, explaining why a &#8220;twindemic&#8221; could still be in the cards. &#8220;<\/span>With more and more people getting vaccinated, this potential is lower than it would have been at the height of the pandemic, but parts of the country with low vaccination rates are currently seeing an uptick in cases. This is a concerning development as we enter flu season, since a simultaneous spike in both COVID-19 and the flu could overload our hospital system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also the risk of people contracting both viruses at once. Whether it\u2019s a breakthrough case or a result of being unvaccinated, it\u2019s entirely possible for someone with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/season\/faq-flu-season-2021-2022.htm\">COVID-19<\/a> to get the flu at the same time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Staying healthy<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are concrete things you can do right now to ensure that you and your loved ones are braced for a potentially severe flu season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u200b\u200bThe resurgence of influenza activity is likely inevitable,\u201d says Dr. Gregg Sylvester, Chief Medical Officer at Seqirus, one of the largest manufacturers of flu vaccines. \u201cWith the path of the COVID-19 pandemic still unknown, it\u2019s important for us to control what we can and mitigate the impact of the flu.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out some tips and tricks below:\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Get a flu shot. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC recommends that pretty much everyone six months and older <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gets a flu shot. People in populations most likely to be hospitalized or die from the flu, including those who are pregnant, under 5, over 65, or have chronic conditions, should get vaccinated. However, Fishbein emphasizes, \u201cvaccination is a team sport that performs best when everyone plays the game. Even if you\u2019re not at risk of serious flu complications, get vaccinated to protect others who are more vulnerable.\u201d Find your closest flu shot site <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/freeresources\/flu-finder-widget.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Get tested. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of us are accustomed to getting a COVID-19 test when we have cold- or flu-like symptoms. Now that we\u2019re in flu season, you should add an influenza test to your order. \u201cThere are combination flu and COVID-19 tests that use one swab to test for both viruses,\u201d says Fishbein. \u201cThey can be accessed in a medical office or an at-home kit.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Remember that the flu is serious. <\/b>A<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fter dealing with COVID-19, it\u2019s easy to dismiss the flu. Don\u2019t. In a typical year, tens of thousands of Americans die from influenza, and while you may not be at high risk for a severe case, you probably know someone who is (plus, having the flu is pretty horrible for anyone).
