{"id":19497,"date":"2022-02-10T11:03:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T16:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=19497"},"modified":"2023-03-08T14:02:08","modified_gmt":"2023-03-08T19:02:08","slug":"intergenerational-trauma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/healthcare-trends\/intergenerational-trauma\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Intergenerational Trauma?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intergenerational trauma has become a buzzword in online mental health spaces, popping up in cultural dialogues, on social media and in popular books like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It Didn&#8217;t Start With You.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there are many words for it \u2014 ancestral, historical, intergenerational \u2014 at its core, the concept suggests that trauma can be passed down through generations. Even if a descendant didn\u2019t directly experience an adverse event, like the Holocaust, they still might experience the impacts of it, says Anissa Howard, a Michigan-based therapist with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammaple.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birmingham Maple Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just a theory either: Multiple landmark studies support the existence of inherited trauma. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4232330\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 research review looked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the effects of Indian Residential Schools in Canada, which subjected Aboriginal children to horrific abuse and neglect. Descendants of former students were more likely to experience distressing physical and psychological conditions than those whose forebears had avoided the IRS system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this study is compelling, the research on ancestral trauma overall is still in its infancy \u2014 so much so that it hasn\u2019t yet made it into the DSM-5, the mental health diagnosis manual. Some critics even claim it\u2019s a sham. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese are, in fact, extraordinary claims, and they are being advanced on less than ordinary evidence,\u201d Kevin Mitchell, an associate professor of genetics and neurology at Trinity College, Dublin, told the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/10\/health\/mind-epigenetics-genes.html#:~:text=The%20findings%2C%20the%20authors%20concluded,passed%20down%20to%20subsequent%20generations.&amp;text=Instead%20it%20alters%20the%20mechanism,into%20functioning%20proteins%2C%20or%20expressed.\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, some practitioners, like Austin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/austinconciergetherapy.com\/about-sara\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas-based therapist Sara Sloan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, discuss inherited trauma with patients to gain an understanding of patterns, health and patient behavior when there is no other answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Where did the idea of intergenerational trauma originate?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the studies on ancestral trauma look at the descendants of populations who experienced mass traumatic events, like genocide, chattel slavery or war. In other instances, they\u2019ve focused on the descendants of people who have been repeatedly marginalized, like Indigenous populations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian psychiatrist Dr. Vivian M. Rakoff conducted some of the earliest research in the field <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discoverarchives.library.utoronto.ca\/index.php\/children-and-families-of-concentration-camp-survivors-v-rakoff-j-j-sigal-n-b-epstein-in-canadas-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1966<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He and his colleagues found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2019\/02\/legacy-trauma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elevated rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of psychological distress in children of Holocaust survivors. All three were born after the Holocaust, but two went on to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/life\/the-holocausts-long-reach-trauma-is-passed-on-to-survivors-children\/article23793425\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempt suicide<\/span><\/a><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Critics have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/blog\/2015\/sep\/11\/why-im-sceptical-about-the-idea-of-genetically-inherited-trauma-epigenetics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">questioned that study\u2019s small sample size<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2018\/10\/trauma-inherited-generations\/573055\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may stand on firmer ground: It found that the male children of men abused in prisoner-of-war camps during the American Civil War were likely to die earlier than peers without that ancestral experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTransmission from father to son to male-line grandson suggests Y chromosome [was affected],\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.econ.ucla.edu\/costa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dora Costa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a UCLA economics professor who authored the study. \u201cWhy it would happen on the Y chromosome, I don&#8217;t know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What are the symptoms of intergenerational trauma? How might they differ and\/or look similar to symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Descendants might experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, like increased stress and behavioral issues, but don\u2019t have a specific reason to blame in their own lives, Sloan says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">West Virginia craniosacral therapist Patricia Rogers says generally, symptoms may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypervigilance\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constant fear<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevated heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid or shallow breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digestive problems<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>How exactly does &#8216;passing down&#8217; trauma work?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers still don\u2019t understand how trauma might pass from one generation to another, though they have a few theories. The most common hypothesis is that people who experience trauma can pass the physiological damage it causes through their genes. Others speculate that people may pass down the effects of trauma simply through the way they raise their children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both could be possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think of DNA as a code, each gene represents a different instruction. Environmental changes, like traumatic events, cannot change the way the code is written, but they<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can chemically switch certain genes on or off, changing the way instructions are translated. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/10\/health\/mind-epigenetics-genes.html#:~:text=The%20findings%2C%20the%20authors%20concluded,passed%20down%20to%20subsequent%20generations.&amp;text=Instead%20it%20alters%20the%20mechanism,into%20functioning%20proteins%2C%20or%20expressed.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be passed down from generation to generation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study of these changes in gene function is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genome.gov\/genetics-glossary\/Epigenetics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">epigenetics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, lifestyle changes can\u2019t erase the fact that diabetes runs in your family. But a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30982733\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study of epigenetics and type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that lifestyle changes can help turn off genes that could increase susceptibility to developing diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for nurture, it\u2019s not inconceivable that the experiences of war prisoners or Holocaust survivors affected their parenting. In fact, Rakoff coauthored a a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/070674377101600503\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1971 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which found that Holocaust survivors had more difficulty exhibiting self-control and parenting their children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow epigenetic? I don\u2019t know,\u201d Sloan says. \u201cHow much is familial and bred in through nurture? I think it\u2019s a combination. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s ever just one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What are some current methods of treatment?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since no one lives a trauma-free life, inherited trauma may be more widespread than previously imagined, Sloan says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She brings up family history using genograms, or a visual display of a person&#8217;s lineage, into therapy sessions with clients. That said, given the scarcity of published and peer-reviewed research on inherited trauma right now, the field continues to treat symptoms like depression and anxiety as it usually would \u2014 with CBT and other forms of talk therapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some mental health practitioners do look beyond talk therapy and medications for treatment options. Craniosacral therapy, for example, seeks \u201ca restoration of autonomic balance,\u201d Rogers says.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0CST is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/17677-craniosacral-therapy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar to massage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in that it uses a light touch to relieve tension near and around the central nervous system. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32147031\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that CST effectively treated severe trauma when combined with psychotherapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another therapeutic approach is eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), which has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7839656\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been in use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more than 30 years.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A therapist will review a patient\u2019s history and go over coping mechanisms for working with trauma, such as deep breathing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, they\u2019ll target a specific memory or thoughts and ask a patient to focus on it while performing specific eye movements. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since a person experiencing the impacts of ancestral trauma won\u2019t have a memory, Sloan says the practitioner may focus on a feeling, an image, a place, or a memory.\u00a0 They could even focus on a sensation in the body<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe traumatized person needs to be supported in a state of relaxation,\u201d says Rogers, \u201cand they also need to develop a sense that the experience is in the past, so they are aware in the present they are safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a therapist\u2019s appointment?
