{"id":19530,"date":"2022-02-24T16:11:46","date_gmt":"2022-02-24T21:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=19530"},"modified":"2023-03-20T13:17:33","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T18:17:33","slug":"what-does-it-mean-to-be-neurodivergent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/what-does-it-mean-to-be-neurodivergent\/","title":{"rendered":"What Does It Mean to Be Neurodivergent?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1990s, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/what-is-neurodiversity-202111232645\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neurodiversity movement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emerged \u2014 with the goal of embracing neurological differences between people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurodiverse (or neurodivergent) individuals form a large share of our global society. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7732033\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimated about 15-20% of the population worldwide is neurodiverse. That population is composed of people with autism, dyslexia, Tourette\u2019s syndrome, ADD\/ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and other conditions. Those without such diagnoses are known as neurotypical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, read what it means to be neurodivergent or neurotypical. You\u2019ll come to understand how the neurodiversity framework can change our understanding of ourselves, our complex brains and the ways we perceive the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What is means to be neurodivergent<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no one single correct way for a brain to be,\u201d explains Adrian Kunemund, PhD, a psychologist in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia. Neurodivergent people have a wide range of neurological differences, and the term covers multiple diagnoses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The broadest of these is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/autism\/facts.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spectrum disorder (ASD), an umbrella term for a variety of lifelong neurodevelopmental conditions. Autism <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7732033\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an estimated 1.6% of the global population, and may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/autism\/signs.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impact<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an individual\u2019s language or movement skills, cognitive development, and sensory experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some other neurodivergent conditions include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/The_Dyslexic_Adult\/xT9zgOtNZqIC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dyslexia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which affects the working memory and impacts verbal and written communications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/The_Dyslexic_Adult\/xT9zgOtNZqIC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADD\/ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can cause inattentiveness, impulsivity, and \u2013 in the case of ADHD \u2013 hyperactive behavior.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bdadyslexia.org.uk\/dyslexia\/neurodiversity-and-co-occurring-differences\/dyspraxia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Development Coordination Disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DCD), known as dyspraxia, which can affect fine motor or gross motor coordination in children and adults, making it difficult to do everyday activities such as riding a bike or driving.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years, some researchers and disability advocates have articulated a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/The_Power_of_Neurodiversity\/GpLIVYwLRxQC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;pg=PR9&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more expansive view of neurodiversity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to include individuals with mental health conditions like depression and anxiety, general learning disabilities, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/Disorders\/Patient-Caregiver-Education\/Fact-Sheets\/Tourette-Syndrome-Fact-Sheet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neurological tic disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Tourette\u2019s, and acquired brain injuries that cause neurological changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The challenges of neurodiversity<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neural differences can make people act, sound, talk, or behave in ways that diverge from neurotypical people, presenting challenges for neurodiverse people who are often misunderstood or mistreated as a result of their condition. The challenges faced by neurodiverse adults have led to alarming outcomes. A 2020 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autistica.org.uk\/news\/autistic-people-highest-unemployment-rates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that only 21.7% of autistic people in the UK are employed, and a 2017 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5693721\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that individuals with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) had lower life expectancy compared to the general population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurodiverse children are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectrumnews.org\/features\/deep-dive\/how-abuse-mars-the-lives-of-autistic-people\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frequently bullied by their peers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and schools, lacking adequate training and resources for serving neurodiverse students, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/education\/ceri\/Spotlight12-Neurodiversity.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often fail to provide quality education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for these students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Christina Nicolaidis has a son with autism; understanding his diagnosis through the framework of neurodiversity helped her relearn ideas about neurology that impact her work as a doctor and as a parent. In an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journalofethics.ama-assn.org\/article\/what-can-physicians-learn-neurodiversity-movement\/2012-06\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AMA Journal of Ethics,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she writes, \u201cCommunicating a strengths-based approach to autism may not only afford autistic patients the respect and dignity they deserve, but may also help family members better understand and support their loved ones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Neurodivergent vs. Neurotypical: What\u2019s the Difference?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurotypical, a term that emerged in tandem with neurodiversity, describes people who don\u2019t have any of the neural conditions clustered under neurodivergence. \u201cThis refers to people whose brains function in a way that the dominant culture is used to seeing and understanding,\u201d Dr. Kunemund explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurotypical doesn\u2019t equate to \u201cnormal,\u201d however: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-018-23696-6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our brains are as unique as our fingerprints<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and much of what we think of as normal is in fact the social conditioning that makes one behavior seem more expected than another. For instance, one student may prefer to sit still while listening to a lecture, while another processes the lecture better while pacing the room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurodiversity reinforces the notion that both behaviors are acceptable \u2013 and both can be accommodated to make spaces more welcoming and inclusive for all people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBrains are different,\u201d says Dr. Kunemund. \u201cThey vary in terms of structure, function, neurochemistry. Neurodiversity acknowledges that those differences are not deficits.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Importance of understanding neurodiversity<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurodiversity is not a diagnosis; it is a way of thinking <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diagnoses, and in doing so, helps us to broaden our understanding of human diversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The neurodiversity model <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/1536504212456175\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dovetails<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the larger disability rights movement, which has empowered individuals with disabilities to advocate for equal treatment, respect, and accommodation, and to be included in research and policy regarding the conditions and issues that affect them, as reflected in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucpress.edu\/book\/9780520224810\/nothing-about-us-without-us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mantra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cnothing about us without us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kunemund stresses the importance of asking people, \u201cHow can we help make our spaces inclusive so you can thrive?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In medical settings, offering patients a wide range of accommodations can make a huge difference in improving care for neurodivergent individuals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspired by her own journey with her autistic son, Dr. Nicolaidis co-founded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aaspire.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AASPIRE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a community-based participatory research organization that seeks to improve the healthcare experiences of neurodivergent adults.
