While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/7-common-types-of-therapy-explained\/\">some therapists<\/a> treat anxiety and depression, others specialize in helping with more specific conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/making-the-doctors-office-safer-for-eating-disorder-survivors\/\">Eating disorders<\/a> affect 9 percent of the US population. They\u2019re the second deadliest mental illnesses, after opioid addiction, and are most likely to affect women. They\u2019re also becoming more and more common; for instance, they\u2019ve skyrocketed among teens during the pandemic due to a confluence of factors at home, including too much time spent comparing themselves to social media.<\/p>\n<p>The three most common eating disorders are anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating disorder. Patients with anorexia typically restrict food intake. People with binge-eating disorder typically consume food past the point of satiety, while patients with bulimia typically binge and then purge.<\/p>\n<p>While everyone\u2019s recovery plan looks different, at some point, patients in eating disorder recovery will need an eating disorder therapist.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, there are specialists out there who can help get to the complex root causes of these conditions.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3>Where should you turn first for treatment if you\u2019re struggling with an eating disorder?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeking help for an eating disorder can be incredibly difficult. At times, it may require some pressure or intervention from concerned friends or family members. Once someone has agreed to get help, their first point of contact will likely be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/anorexia-nervosa\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20353597\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary care doctor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They can help you determine next steps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment isn\u2019t a one-size-fits-all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/healthcare-trends\/the-quest-to-make-eating-disorder-treatment-more-inclusive\/\">solution<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, if someone has experienced severe weight loss, they might have to be directly admitted into the hospital.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But depending on the patient\u2019s condition, there are a range of other treatment options, from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">residential treatment facilities to outpatient programs \u2014 or less structured self-driven recovery plans with individual practitioners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of the format, comprehensive treatment requires a team of practitioners, typically a medical doctor, a dietitian and an eating disorder therapist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>So, what\u2019s an eating disorder therapist?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Joann Hendelman, clinical director of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allianceforeatingdisorders.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Alliance for Eating Disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explains, \u201cEating disorder behavior is only the tip of the iceberg.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While a dietitian might come up with a meal plan to help a patient improve their physical health, an eating disorder therapist works with a patient to address the root psychological causes behind their behaviors. Everything from low-self esteem to certain personality traits can cause an eating disorder to manifest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most eating disorder therapists are trained in at least one of these therapeutic modalities:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-E): <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This form of CBT is tailored to eating disorders. It uses a variety of strategies to identify and then modify or manage the thoughts and beliefs that contribute to an eating disorder. As opposed to regular CBT, CBT-E incorporates modules that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2928448\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">address certain eating disorder-specific obstacles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like perfectionism and low self-esteem. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jeatdisord.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40337-022-00536-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that when a patient sticks with the program, CBT-E is an effective eating disorder treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT): <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This approach helps patients manage difficult emotions by promoting skills like flexibility, emotional expression and mindfulness. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/10640266.2020.1723371\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research is still emerging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the effectiveness of DBT in treating eating disorders, but initial evidence <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5670741\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">looks promising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT): <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This anorexia-specific treatment approach aims to alter rigid thinking patterns through a variety of exercises. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6016143\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows it can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5869183\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT): <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This approach helps patients overcome bulimia and binge-eating disorder by reframing how they approach and cope in their interpersonal relationships. It <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3886290\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been shown to be<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an effective long-term treatment for these eating disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like all therapists, eating disorder therapists also need to be incredibly patient, especially because eating disorders are often lifelong conditions that can be incredibly hard to kick to the curb.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOften, individuals experiencing eating disorders may not want treatment and will fight to keep their eating disorder,\u201d Hendelman says. \u201cThey can be extremely impulsive. There will typically be many ups and downs in the course of the treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Where does an eating disorder therapist fit into a full treatment plan?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlthough many therapists may occasionally check in with other professionals working with their patients, when working with eating disorders, this is essential,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hendelmen says. Without a tight-knit team to look out for them, a patient can find loopholes in treatment to \u201cstay entrenched\u201d in disordered behaviors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAn eating disorder is a complex, biopsychosocial illness,\u201d Hendelmen adds, pointing to the fact that they\u2019re often accompanied by comorbid psychological conditions, like depression or anxiety, as well as physiological consequences, like malnourishment or amenorrhea, the absence of a period.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An eating disorder therapist will also understand the importance of collaborating with a patient\u2019s full treatment team, which generally includes a physician and a dietitian. Usually, the patient sees their therapist with the most frequency, often on a weekly basis. Depending on the severity of someone&#8217;s physical symptoms, several weeks or even months may elapse between appointments with doctors and dietitians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Regardless, all the providers keep in close contact, working together to make sure a patient stays on track. A patient\u2019s therapist might touch base with their nutritionist to find out any important eating changes or goals, and their doctor will notify the rest of the team about any weight fluctuations or concerning labs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What qualifications should I look for in an eating disorder therapist?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t specific requirements therapists need to meet to call themselves an \u201ceating disorder therapist.\u201d However, if you\u2019re looking for a provider as a patient, there are a few things you can look out for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most graduate programs don\u2019t include extensive education on eating disorders, so to become an eating disorder therapist, practitioners must go through additional, eating disorder-specific training. The American Board of Clinical Social Work <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abcsw.org\/index.php?option=com_dailyplanetblog&amp;view=entry&amp;year=2021&amp;month=01&amp;day=13&amp;id=10:training-competency-in-the-treatment-of-eating-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends a threefold approach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to eating disorder training, involving didactic learning (i.e., school), supervised clinical practice and personal therapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only a handful of universities offer eating disorder certificates for master\u2019s students (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.lclark.edu\/programs\/continuing_education\/certificates\/eating_disorders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lewis &amp; Clark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chhs.niu.edu\/health-studies\/programs\/nutrition\/certificate\/index.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Illinois University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example), but other organizations have stepped up to fill in the educational gaps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/icpnyc.org\/csab\/2-year-training-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for the Study of Anorexia and Bulimia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers a two year post-graduate training program in the treatment of eating disorders. Doctors, dietitians and therapists can also take a course through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals to become <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iaedp.com\/certification-overview\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an IAEDP-certified eating disorder specialist (CEDS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Furthermore, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/anad.org\/get-help\/treatment-directory\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ANAD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/map.nationaleatingdisorders.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NEDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allianceforeatingdisorders.com\/find-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Alliance for Eating Disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all have helpful directories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"zd-widget-container\">\n<div id=\"zd-fallback-container\">Zocdoc helps you find and book top-rated doctors, on demand.
