Magazines like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/1058766\/marynliles\/best-pimple-popping-videos\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parade<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/pimple-popping-videos\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teen Vogue<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regularly feature round-ups of the best pimple-popping videos, and dermatologist Dr. Sandra Lee\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCgrsF4TYwmrV0QsXb8AoeHQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Pimple Popper YouTube channel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has amassed more than 7.4 million subscribers since it was started in 2010.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why the fascination? For one, it\u2019s simply satisfying. \u201cPeople feel frustrated by pimples, and popping one can lead to a sense of mental or physical relief afterward,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michelegreenmd.com\/acne-treatment-nyc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Michele Green<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Manhattan-based dermatologist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weirdly enough, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0166432821000164?via%3Dihub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research also shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that people who enjoy pimple-popping videos have a high curiosity for negative content and are less easily disgusted than most. But how does pimple popping affect your skin and your health?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s grab our gloves and get into it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Zitgeist<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average American woman <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/swns-research.medium.com\/women-admit-to-popping-thousands-of-pimples-in-their-adult-lifetime-a1b1f749047\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pops 65 pimples annually<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While pimple popping is OK in some instances, done incorrectly, it can damage your skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/is-quarantine-skin-a-thing\/\">Pimples<\/a> are caused by overactive sebaceous glands, which create excess oil in the skin. This oil, combined with dead skin cells and bacteria, gets trapped in a pore and in some cases forms pus. When you pop a pimple, you release the pus or dead skin cells inside.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choosing to squeeze a zit on your own can lead to any number of mishaps. \u201cYou\u2019re essentially breaking your skin barrier and increasing your risk for acne scarring,\u201d says Green.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By applying pressure, you can even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459173\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">release the pimple\u2019s contents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the lower layer of skin. \u201cMany people pop pimples thinking they\u2019re helping to get the pus and bacteria out,\u201d says Green. \u201cBut doing so can push it deeper into the skin, leading to increased swelling, redness, risk of permanent scars and prolonged healing times.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Professional Poppers<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If pimple popping is so damaging, how come it\u2019s so popular online?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Green recommends using pimple patches or topical creams to treat acne, for some cases, if a pimple is particularly large or painful and other treatments have failed, dermatologists know safe techniques to pop pimples for patients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many pimple-popping videos on social media come from amateurs, but some dermatologists do pop pimples, whether they share it on these platforms or not. \u201cBoard-certified dermatologists have had years of experience and know the proper technique to drain pimples, cysts and nodules while minimizing your risk of scarring,\u201d says Green.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dermatologists may use one of these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/acne\/skin-care\/popping\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two techniques<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to pop a pimple for you:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acne extraction: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using sterilized instruments to extract the contents of blackheads and whiteheads from pores, sometimes accompanied by a corticosteroid injection to speed up healing and reduce risk of scarring\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Incision and drainage: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using a sterile needle or surgical blade to open up the pimple and empty its contents\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Popping Poise<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While dermatologists generally recommend against pimple popping, many acknowledge instances in which it\u2019s OK to DIY \u2014 namely, if your blemish is a whitehead or blackhead that has a \u201chead.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMake sure the pimple is ready by seeing if there\u2019s a firm white head,\u201d advises Green. \u201cThis indicates that the pus is close to the skin surface and ready to be drained.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(The head indicates the pimple itself is very close to the surface and ready to be expelled. You don\u2019t need to apply as much force and the risk of scarring is lower.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/pimple-popping-101-how-to-safely-zap-your-zits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid major skin damage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, consider the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/is-that-acne-or-is-your-skin-purging\/\">type of pimple<\/a> you\u2019re dealing with. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/12233-acne\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pimples can be<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Whiteheads:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Small white bumps containing excess oil and dead skin cells. You can pop these in some circumstances.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Blackheads<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Open pores clogged with excess oil and dead skin cells, resembling dirt. You can also pop these in some circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pustules:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pimples containing visible pus. They look similar to whiteheads but are larger and have red, inflamed skin around them. You can pop these in some circumstances.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Papules:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Large, raised red bumps with no visible ball of pus, also known as \u201cblind pimples.\u201d You shouldn\u2019t pop papules under any circumstance. Since papules don\u2019t have heads, popping just really means tearing open your skin. This comes with scabbing, as well as potential scarring or infection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you assess your zit, follow these best practices:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Wash up.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap, and gently clean the area with an acne wash such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid,\u201d advises Dr. Anne Truitt, a San Diego-based dermatologist and former president of the San Diego Dermatological Society.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Apply a warm compress. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can soothe the area and make your pimple rear a \u201chead\u201d quicker.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Use your fingers. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truitt says to use the side of your fingers rather than the nail tip \u2014 or better yet, wrap your fingers in a tissue or gauze, then gently press around the pimple. Never apply excessive pressure. \u201cIf the pus doesn\u2019t come out easily, the pimple isn\u2019t ready to be popped,\u201d says Green.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Wash up (again). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To minimize your risk of infection, wash your hands and face or take a shower after you\u2019ve popped the pimple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
