{"id":19606,"date":"2022-04-19T22:03:31","date_gmt":"2022-04-20T03:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=19606"},"modified":"2023-03-06T19:53:28","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T00:53:28","slug":"dentists-debate-toothpastes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/dentists-debate-toothpastes\/","title":{"rendered":"Dentists Debate Toothpastes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a dentist\u2019s ideal world, you wouldn\u2019t only brush your teeth twice a day \u2014 you\u2019d be doing the job <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brushing for the full two minutes and choosing the right toothpaste. Yet with all the toothpastes on shelves to choose from, it can be difficult to figure out which one to use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People live busy lives full of eating, drinking and sleeping. Toothpaste helps clear away food debris and protects teeth against decay with a special recipe of antibacterial and cleansing agents. Your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/the-human-body\/whats-in-toothpaste\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">typical toothpaste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is made of fluoride, which helps strengthen your tooth enamel against cavities; sodium lauryl sulphate, the ingredient that creates a nice foaming effect; and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triclosan, an antibacterial agent that helps prevent gum disease. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toothpaste also contains some level of abrasive ingredients, commonly derived from chalk or silica,\u00a0to gently scrub stains and debris off your teeth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While toothpaste can come with any or all of these ingredients, which one you choose depends on your needs and preferences. We spoke with five dentists about the most popular types of toothpaste on the market and whether they really do what they claim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Kids\u2019 toothpaste<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What type of toothpaste you should use for your kid \u2014 and how much \u2014 depends on their age. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jada.ada.org\/article\/S0002-8177(14)60226-9\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Dental Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, caregivers should use no more than a smear of fluoride toothpaste on children under the age of 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For kids ages 3 to 6, caregivers shouldn\u2019t dispense more than a pea-sized drop of fluoride toothpaste. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children\u2019s toothpaste generally contains flavors that are approachable for kids, fun marketing and tube sizes that are easier for children to hold,\u201d says Dr. Kate Zoumboukos of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swaustindental.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SW Austin Dental<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Whitening toothpaste<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whitening toothpaste usually contains more of those abrasive ingredients, which makes it better at scrubbing stains from the surface of the teeth. Chicago-based Dr. Alexander Alemis says he doesn\u2019t see any issues with whitening toothpaste and encourages people to try different products to see what they like.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Rob Raimondi of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onemanhattandental.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Manhattan Dental<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the other hand, isn\u2019t a fan of whitening pastes. He says the abrasive ingredients can thin the enamel on your teeth and cause more damage in the long run; he recommends <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/what-do-dental-pros-think-about-teeth-whitening\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whitening strips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over whitening paste. \u201cGetting regular cleanings can remove stains in a healthy way,\u201d says Raimondi, \u201cbut if a tooth polished at the dentist isn\u2019t white enough, you can chemically whiten your teeth with strips at home or with an in-office procedure.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Sensitive toothpaste<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These formulas can benefit people who have receding gum lines that expose teeth\u2019s roots, experience sensitivity to heat or cold when eating or find brushing painful for another reason. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Ryan Dulde, of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eagle.dental\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eagle Dental<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Eagle, Wisconsin, says this type of paste is usually free of ingredients that could irritate, like the strong abrasives or hydrogen peroxide sometimes used for whitening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitive toothpaste also contains more fluoride than standard varieties, which Dulde says can help \u201cplug the pores of the teeth so the nerve endings are less sensitive and don\u2019t perceive temperature or rubbing.\u201d Another trick to prevent irritation while brushing is to use your nondominant hand to brush. \u201cYou don\u2019t need a heavy hand to do a good job,\u201d Dulde says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before making the jump to a new toothpaste, Zoumboukos says it\u2019s important to talk to your dentist about any increased sensitivity. Your provider may want to address issues contributing to sensitivity, like worn tooth enamel or exposed roots.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Prescription toothpaste<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A toothpaste that\u2019s prescription-grade contains even more fluoride than sensitive toothpaste, which makes it a good option for people with extra-sensitive mouths. It\u2019s also commonly prescribed for people who don\u2019t have enough saliva in their mouths due to medical procedures, like radiation for head or neck cancer. \u201cSaliva has anti-cavity characteristics, so if you have less saliva, you may be more prone to cavities,\u201d Alemis says. Fluoride creates an extra barrier on your teeth that\u2019s hard for acids created by bacteria to penetrate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra fluoride is safe as long as you don\u2019t swallow it, but Zoumboukos says it\u2019s important to keep your prescription toothpaste away from kids and pets who could get into it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Charcoal toothpaste<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve likely seen more dental products advertising charcoal, whether as an ingredient or as a component of a brush. Charcoal is absorbent, so doctors sometimes give it to patients who have ingested poison. \u201cSomeone had the idea to put it in toothpaste to absorb toxins in your mouth,\u201d says Raimondi. \u201cThen they realized how abrasive it is, so it makes your teeth look really white.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raimondi generally doesn\u2019t recommend charcoal-based products as a primary toothpaste, as that level of abrasion can damage your teeth and gums. Dr. Jonelle Anamelechi, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mychildrenschoicedental.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children\u2019s Choice Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dentist based in Washington, D.C., agrees. The key point for her is that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the effectiveness of charcoal toothpastes haven\u2019t been proven in clinical research. Many brands or lines of charcoal toothpaste also don\u2019t contain ingredients that make toothpaste effective, like fluoride.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Baking soda toothpaste<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many store-bought toothpastes also contain baking soda, which Dulde says is gently abrasive and can lift stains and polish teeth. If you\u2019re looking at a standard toothpaste that happens to contain baking soda, he doesn\u2019t have a problem with it. But if the paste\u2019s only active ingredient is baking soda, you might be missing out on beneficial ingredients. \u201cBaking soda could be a beneficial ingredient,\u201d he says, \u201cbut brushing with baking soda alone wouldn\u2019t be my first choice.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Standard fluoride toothpaste<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, you have the most basic \u2014 and possibly beneficial \u2014 toothpaste out there: run-of-the-mill fluoride toothpaste. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluoride is a safe, cheap, effective ingredient and has many benefits for public health,\u201d says Dulde. \u201cIt strengthens enamel and makes teeth more resistant to cavity damage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, Anamelechi says, fluoride toothpaste is a good baseline. Once you\u2019ve confirmed that it\u2019s present, choose a product based on any other needs, such as whitening or sensitivity. Although there\u2019s plenty of research to support the use of fluoride toothpaste, some people are concerned about its effects. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6195894\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive fluoride intake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause nausea or an upset stomach, and long-term excessive intake is associated with bone disease. Neither is likely unless you\u2019re eating tubes of toothpaste on the daily.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rinsing extra after you brush can ensure you don\u2019t swallow too much of it, says Raimondi. Some manufacturers also opt for other active ingredients, such as xylitol, a natural sweetener purported to avoid tooth decay. (So far, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0020653920332056\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies are unclear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about that claim.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t rely on your toothpaste to fix all your oral and dental health issues, of course. \u201cToothpaste is helpful, but we believe the brush is more important, because it does the mechanical action of cleaning your teeth,\u201d says Dulde.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alemis suggests using a generic soft-bristled toothbrush (yes, like the kind you get from your dentist)\u00a0and replacing it every few months. \u201cAs you brush, go back and forth, with half the bristles on your gums and half on the teeth,\u201d he says. There\u2019s no hard-and-fast rule, but Raimondi suggests aiming for two or three minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you still need help with your brushing routine or choosing a toothpaste? Check in with your dentist or dental hygienist before you brave the dental care aisle \u2014\u00a0and while you\u2019re at it, maybe schedule that cleaning you\u2019ve probably been putting off too.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
