You have to deal with the personal questions, the crinkly gown \u2014 and the fear that your doctor might find a dangerous, speckled outlier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s awkward, but that doesn\u2019t mean you can skip them. After all, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/even-one-bad-sunburn-can-cause-skin-cancer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skin cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the most common cancer in the U.S. If a derm catches it early with a skin check, however, the survival rate is very high.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While recommendations vary by organization, in general, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/annual-skin-exam\/#:~:text=Here's%20the%20deal%3A%20The%20Skin,at%20high%20risk%20for%20it).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin Cancer Foundation <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends all adults get an annual skin screening. For people who are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/usptf-colon-cancer-breast-cancer-screenings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">considered high-risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 e.g., those with many moles, fair skin and hair, a history of sunburns, or a personal or family history of skin cancer \u2014 these skin checks are critical. Young patients with no risk factors might only need to come in once every two to five years, while someone with a history of melanoma may need a check every three to six months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12237925\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">men are less likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to perform monthly self-exams or see a dermatologist regularly, so it\u2019s important to note these recommendations apply to everyone. Additionally, skin checks are usually fully or at least partly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/annual-skin-exam\/#:~:text=Most%20health%20insurance%20covers%20part,never%20hurts%20to%20check%20first).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">covered by insurance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means one less excuse for making an appointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you know the basics of getting an appointment, here\u2019s what to expect when you bare it all the next time you get a skin check.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The naked truth<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to get undressed for a skin check? Yes. \u201cWe don\u2019t have X-ray vision,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centraldermcenter.com\/our-dermatology-physicians\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Beth Goldstein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a North Carolina-based dermatologist. \u201cIf we can\u2019t see it, we can\u2019t evaluate it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means you\u2019ll need to remove your clothing and put on one of the aforementioned crinkly gowns. Women usually have to remove their bras, but can often <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/early-detection\/annual-exams\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep on their underwear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some doctors screen the genital area, especially if the patient has a concerning spot there, but genital screening <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/blog\/skin-exams.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t generally necessary.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(That\u2019s because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2016\/05\/160511122518.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fewer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than 1 percent of all melanomas are found in the genital area.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to take off any jewelry or nail polish and come in makeup-free. Any of these could obscure concerning spots on the face, head, nail beds and elsewhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Problem areas<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a skin check, your provider will check your entire body, from head to toe. If there are any moles or spots that you\u2019re worried about, the doctor will also take a close look at those, wherever they are.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some areas, dermatologists pay particularly close attention. A skin check helps a doctor look for two types of cancers: melanoma, the most severe, life-threatening type, and basal and squamous cell skin cancers, which are more common and much less deadly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basal and squamous cell skin cancers are often found in areas that get the most sun exposure, like your head, your neck or the tops of your hands. In men, melanomas, (abnormal, cancerous moles) most often occur on the back, while in women, they tend to appear on arms and legs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your dermatologist will also pay close attention to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/early-detection\/annual-exams\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hard-to-see spots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like your back, your butt, behind your ears and your scalp. In between skin checks, Atlanta-based dermatologist Dr. Mary Alice Mina recommends patients ask their hairdressers to take a peak for anything worrisome on their scalps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While a lot of the skin check is done with the naked eye, your dermatologist might also use a small magnifying device <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/skin-cancer-screening-what-to-expect-during-a-full-body-skin-exam\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called a dermatoscope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to look at moles or skin lesions in greater detail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What your doc\u2019s looking for\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A typical skin check only lasts around 15 minutes, all the more reason to squeeze one into your schedule when you can. Your derm is able to cover all the bases in that short time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot is going on during a skin check that patients may not even be aware of!\u201d says Mina. \u201cEven when you\u2019re just chatting and introducing yourself, a dermatologist is assessing a patient&#8217;s skin, the tone, texture, sun damage.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking for moles, dermatologists follow the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/skin-cancer\/find\/at-risk\/abcdes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABCDEs of skin cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: asymmetry, border irregularity, color change, diameter over 6 millimeters and evolution, or any changes in the mole. However, there are certain types of melanomas, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/amelanotic-melanoma-it-doesnt-look-like-other-melanomas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201camelanotic\u201d because of the absence of melanin, that are unpigmented and could be missed. This is, of course, a scary prospect, but amelanotic melanomas <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancercenter.com\/cancer-types\/melanoma\/types\/amelanotic-melanoma#:~:text=Amelanotic%20melanomas%20are%20not%20common,20%20percent%20of%20all%20melanomas.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are relatively rare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and often are still caught by a trained dermatologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides moles, dermatologists also look out for other signs of potential concern, such as redness or swelling, tenderness or pain, changes in skin texture or scars where there\u2019s no history of trauma. Each of these might hint at a bigger issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While skin checks are primarily aimed at detecting skin cancer, dermatologists can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/12165-dermatologists-skin-care-doctors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recognize other skin conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like psoriasis, rosacea, eczema and rashes. If they see something that indicates one of these other conditions, they\u2019ll likely recommend a follow-up appointment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>After you check off your skin check<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your doctor finds a suspicious spot during your skin check, they\u2019ll remove a small area of your skin in a quick biopsy and send the tissue sample off to a lab to be analyzed. The biopsy is usually done right then and there. Don\u2019t worry: Through the magic of local anesthetic, it\u2019s generally painless, and you\u2019ll get the results <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/blog\/skin-exams.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within a week or so<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the spot is cancerous, the next steps will depend on the size and type of the cancer. Treatment often involves <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/even-one-bad-sunburn-can-cause-skin-cancer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an excision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (surgically removing all of the cancer and the surrounding area). Caught early enough, skin cancers typically have an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aimatmelanoma.org\/melanoma-101\/how-melanoma-is-diagnosed\/prognosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excellent prognosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with high survival rates and extra incentives to keep a close eye out for recurrence.
