Over the past few years, millions of people have taken a renewed interest in achieving glowy, clear complexions. In 2021, the skincare product market <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reportlinker.com\/p06270042\/Skincare-Products-Market-Forecast-to-COVID-19-Impact-and-Global-Analysis-By-Product-Type-Category-End-User-and-Distribution-Channel.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was valued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at $115.4 million; it\u2019s projected to reach $213.4 million by 2028.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In turn, massive communities have popped up online to help people design their dream skincare routines. Curious about your celebrity\u2019s skincare regimen? Look no further than YouTube. Need to address a specific issue? Reddit has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/style\/reddit-most-popular-skin-care-brands-2020-skincare-addiction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thousands of threads<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on skincare. And Tiktok\u2026well, you can find more than what you need to know there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSkincare is having a moment right now,\u201d says Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at New York\u2019s Mount Sinai Hospital. \u201cNavigating your skincare routine can be extremely complicated because there\u2019s so much conflicting information out there.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/what-to-expect-from-a-skin-check\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dermatologists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommend talking to an expert before starting any complex regimens, because combining certain remedies can actually cause more damage than good.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUsually when spring and summer are starting, we get a lot of questions about sunscreen,\u201d says Dr. Emily Newsom, a UCLA dermatologist. \u201cBut I think it\u2019s just as important that we talk about what products can make you more sensitive to the sun.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some beloved products, like retinoids, can make your skin more susceptible to damage from UV rays.\u00a0 Below, derms weigh in on which products to be careful with this summer, with some important tips and tricks to avoid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/what-to-expect-from-a-skin-check\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">damaging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your complexion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Which products can make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retinoids, which are topical vitamin A treatments, are often considered the holy grail of skincare products. When a patient introduces a retinol concentration into their routine, they may experience redness and peeling. That\u2019s because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/do-retinoids-really-reduce-wrinkles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retinoids target<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrinkles, large pores and uneven texture by exfoliating, increasing skin cell turnover and promoting collagen production. \u201cIngredients like retinol can increase the risk of sunburn by thinning out the outer skin layer,\u201d Zeichner says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you should stick to applying retinol at night and lather up on sunscreen the next day, users often tolerate the product better in the summer than in the winter, because the climate often isn\u2019t as dry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While retinoids are antioxidants, a wide range of exfoliants also \u201ctake off the top layer of your skin, which makes it more vulnerable to UV rays,\u201d Newsom adds. Exfoliants range from sweet-smelling sugar scrubs to chemical concoctions, which use acids to break down compounds in your skin and increase cell turnover.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popular chemical exfoliants include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/cosmetics\/cosmetic-ingredients\/alpha-hydroxy-acids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which target hyperpigmentation, fine lines and other issues, and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), which primarily target issues like acne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glycolic and lactic acids (which are \u201ca little gentler and better tolerated if your skin is sensitive to the retinol,\u201d Newsom says) fall under the umbrella of AHAs. Salicylic acid, a BHA, is one of the most common ingredients used to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/unpacking-the-cultural-phenomenon-of-pimple-popping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fight acne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; you\u2019ll likely find it in any type of acne spot treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other common skincare ingredients that can make your skin more sensitive to UV damage include benzoyl peroxide and citrus essential oils.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3>How can you use these skincare products while also protecting your skin?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newsom recommends applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, specifically mineral sunscreens which have zinc oxide or titanium oxide. \u201cThey have the best coverage, but they can be a little more white,\u201d she says, which can be noticeably streaky on people with darker skin tones. \u201cThere\u2019s also tinted zinc moisturizer that\u2019s a little more elegant.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The standard sunscreen recommendation is at least SPF 30, but Newsom points out that your level of protection can stem from how much you appy, rather than SPF alone. \u201cIt\u2019s a common mistake that people just don\u2019t apply sunscreen thick enough,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you put on SPF 60 and you don\u2019t put it on thick enough, you could actually only be getting SPF 30 or less.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you still experience skin irritation from the sun while you\u2019re wearing proper <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/even-one-bad-sunburn-can-cause-skin-cancer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sun protection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Newsom recommends backing off the retinol for the time being. Talk to your dermatologist for advice on what could work best for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3>On the flip side, what are some skincare ingredients that can help repair sun damage?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say you sit out too long and are worried about wrinkles, or you apply retinol at night, then forget your sunscreen in the morning \u2014 and can visibly feel the irritation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you can\u2019t undo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/even-one-bad-sunburn-can-cause-skin-cancer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the damage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you \u201ccan help minimize and repair\u201d some of it, Zeichner says. \u201cI recommend applying an antioxidant serum that contains vitamin C every morning,\u201d he says. \u201cVitamin C neutralizes free radicals, also known as environmental toxins, to protect our skin. Vitamin C also blocks production of abnormal pigmentation to lighten dark spots and even skin tone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ziechner and Newsom both warn that patients should vet out the skincare advice they\u2019re taking. \u201cI think it\u2019s great that people are interested in skin and what we do,\u201d Newsom says.
