{"id":19663,"date":"2022-05-25T14:43:09","date_gmt":"2022-05-25T19:43:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=19663"},"modified":"2023-03-06T19:50:13","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T00:50:13","slug":"how-to-spot-health-misinformation-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/how-to-spot-health-misinformation-online\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Spot Health Misinformation Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019d think, as a seasoned health journalist, I\u2019d be immune to health news fake outs. However, even I am capable of being duped. Recently, I came across a website that looked professional and had a \u201c.org\u201d at the end of its URL. Turns out I couldn\u2019t find a single source that backed the website\u2019s claims. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peddling health misinformation is not a new phenomenon, but the internet and the influence of social media have caused it to spread like \u2014 well, a virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDigital technologies enable misinformation to spread much more quickly and have a much wider reach,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/staffprofiles.cancer.gov\/brp\/prgmStaffProfile.do?contactId=16845073&amp;name=Anna-Gaysynsky&amp;bioType=stf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna Gaysynsky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a health communications researcher. \u201cThe costs of producing and disseminating information are much lower than they used to be. That&#8217;s good in terms of increasing access to good, accurate information, but when these same sorts of mechanisms are leveraged to spread misinformation, that&#8217;s obviously very concerning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what\u2019s the average health consumer to do? While there are no hard and fast rules, here are some clues that an online source might be a little shady.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Sloppy design<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often sites with false health information scream \u201ccheesy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf it uses all caps and has a hundred exclamation points and spelling mistakes, that might be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a clue that it\u2019s maybe not the most credible information,\u201d says Gaysynsky.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a nicely designed, typo-free page does not guarantee the information is accurate, nor does its extension. Dot gov (.gov) is safe because only government agencies can use it, but other common extensions \u2014 .com .org, and .edu \u2014 are not proof of authority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf it&#8217;s .edu, then it comes from a university,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sils.unc.edu\/people\/faculty\/profiles\/Francesca-Tripodi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Francesca Bolla Tripodi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina School of Library and Information Science. \u201cBut that doesn&#8217;t mean all the information&#8217;s great.\u201d For example, faculty can upload papers from their students, but those might not be the most reliable source of information. Anyone can register a .org domain, but even a real 501(c)(3) nonprofit may not necessarily be trustworthy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Inflammatory language<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A legitimate health information website or social media post will present the facts without bias. It will not try to play on your emotions or alarm you. Signs that a source has an agenda \u2014 political, financial or otherwise \u2014 include inflammatory language or images that are emotionally provocative, says Gaysynsky. \u201cAre they just presenting information or are they trying to scare you or make you angry?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media especially can lead you down a dark path. Unlike when you actively search for something on the internet, social media relies on passive engagement. Once you follow an influencer, you may be constantly bombarded with recommendations to follow others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, the Center for Countering Digital Hate found that following wellness influencers on Instagram <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/counterhate.com\/research\/malgorithm-fix-instagram\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could lead you to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> progressively more hardline anti-vaccine content. \u201cMaybe you\u2019re just looking for dieting advice,\u201d says Gaysynsky, \u201cbut the recommendation algorithms might push you into something that you weren&#8217;t searching for to begin with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The promise of a cure<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnything that promises a cure for something that is incurable is a huge red flag,\u201d says Tripodi. \u201cFor example, there is no cure for autism. But if you Google \u2018autism cure,\u2019 you&#8217;ll get a lot of nonevidence-based practices claiming to be cures, some of which can be extremely harmful to yourself or your children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tripodi says the first words you put into a search bar can make all the difference. \u201cIf you&#8217;re typing \u2018cure\u2019 for a disease that doesn\u2019t have one, chances are the internet will find you one, so starting points are really important for driving your end. Entering \u2018autism treatment\u2019 or \u2018autism therapy\u2019 are very different from \u2018cure\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Now that you know what to look for, here\u2019s how to make sure you\u2019re not being duped:<\/h3>\n<h3>Give the site a once-over<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Library of Medicine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/webeval\/intro1.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offers a tutorial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comparing a legitimate website and a deceptive one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cAbout Us\u201d page is a good place to start. First of all, does the site have one, and if it does, who exactly is \u201cus\u201d? A fake site is likely to be vague (e.g., \u201ca group of people devoted to heart health\u201d), whereas a legitimate site will list actual people, their job titles and affiliations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Get off the page and check sources<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tripodi recommends getting off the suspect page as quickly as possible and opening a new tab so you can \u201cuse the internet to check the internet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your goal is to find other vetted sources that are providing the same information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to find other people that are saying the same thing, in different words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAre you getting other people backing up the information [in their own words],\u201d says Tripodi, \u201cor is it content that\u2019s been cut and pasted over and over again?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also lots of organizations dedicated to fact-checking health information. Missouri\u2019s St. Louis Community College Libraries has a thorough <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.stlcc.edu\/fakenews\/factchecking\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list of reputable fact-checking sites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for checking the accuracy of health and political coverage in news media, as well as information online overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Check the date<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sheer quantity of information online, plus the fact that everything is hyperlinked,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means that articles and videos often stay up indefinitely. Knowing when something was posted can offer important context.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tripodi did a study looking at a Facebook group that downplayed the threat of COVID-19. \u201cThey were posting a video of Anthony Fauci when he went on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 Minutes,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where he said masks weren&#8217;t needed,\u201d she says. \u201cWell, that was two months into this pandemic, when we didn&#8217;t have PPE for doctors and nurses. And that video is still on YouTube. YouTube has put up a small disclaimer, but if you post the link onto Facebook, all you see is the video.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Talk to your doctor<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re still confused and skeptical, check in with your doctor, who is, after all, a real human being with medical training, not governed by keywords and algorithms.*<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*While there have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2789369\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of medical professionals spreading false information about COVID-19, the vast majority of reputable healthcare providers follow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/your-health\/about-covid-19.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
