{"id":19665,"date":"2022-05-26T09:07:29","date_gmt":"2022-05-26T14:07:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=19665"},"modified":"2023-03-06T19:49:55","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T00:49:55","slug":"how-bad-is-commuting-for-your-mental-and-physical-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/how-bad-is-commuting-for-your-mental-and-physical-health\/","title":{"rendered":"How Bad Is Commuting for Your Mental and Physical Health?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sean Farnan\u2019s loathing for his work commute was so intense, it attracted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcbayarea.com\/news\/local\/bart-idiot-hall-of-fame-takes-off\/1932917\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local media attention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farnan, an IT manager from Oakland, California, used to take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) to get to his job in San Francisco. Theoretically, the trip takes 25 minutes, but it often stretched much longer, thanks to crowded trains and other delays. At one point, Farnan became so fed up, he created a Facebook group called \u201cThe BART Idiot Hall of Fame\u201d to complain. \u201cBART is such a trainwreck, literally and figuratively, but you\u2019re stuck on it and there\u2019s nothing you can do,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To his dismay, while Farnan was briefly able to work remotely at the beginning of pandemic lockdown, more recently, he had to go back into the office. He was so anxious, he traded the train for his car. \u201cI was worried about COVID-19 and didn&#8217;t want to trust people to wear masks on crowded trains,\u201d he says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For years, workers have ragged on the drudgery of the commute; the opening scenes of the 1999 comedy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Office Space<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/C3jizSM6M0o\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sum up its low points<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pretty well. Yet during COVID-19, many people missed the routine of commuting enough that they faked it at home to replace the ritual that eased them into the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the world reopens, new factors now come into the equation for commuters. Increased <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-11-28\/as-pandemic-eases-l-a-trains-and-buses-see-one-downside-of-return-to-normalcy-a-rise-in-crime\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/transportation\/2022\/04\/16\/brooklyn-new-york-subway-shooting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public transit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, coupled with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/10\/economy\/gas-prices-inflation\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rising gas prices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the ongoing threat of a new COVID-19 variant, are putting a damper on the return to work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We break down how your commute can affect your mental health, so you can figure out the right route to your own well-being.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3>Highway to health<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors like timing and method can make or break whether your commute is good for you or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research says that most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.1815928115\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commuters can typically tolerate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> up to 45 minutes in transit; beyond that, getting to work becomes unbearable. Other studies show that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1023\/A:1010366321778\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ideal work commute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is around 16 minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t the reality for most. Americans\u2019 overall commute time has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2021\/one-way-travel-time-to-work-rises.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stretched about 10 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 2006. While the average one-way trip to work takes about 28 minutes today, nearly 1 in 10 Americans spends more than an hour getting to work each day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The timing of your commute also matters for your physical and mental health. If it\u2019s a tolerable length, commuters <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1023\/A:1010366321778\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tend to find more positives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their trip; for instance, they appreciate the transition it offers from home to work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have a lower tolerance for stress and unpredictability will have a harder time dealing with the unknowns of a commute, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lightonanxiety.com\/staff\/dr-debra-kissen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Debra Kissen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cognitive behavioral therapist who specializes in treating anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With COVID-19 and other factors, taking public transit can feel exceptionally unpredictable. One recent Japanese study found that people who took public transportation to work <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34879866\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to have infection-related anxiety than others. The authors noted that the longer the commute, the higher the anxiety participants reported. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/content\/dam\/Census\/library\/publications\/2021\/acs\/acs-48.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 percent of US workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> take public transportation to work, most people drive \u2014 76 percent solo and 9 percent by carpool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fewer than 1 percent of Americans bike to work, likely in some part thanks to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22671552\/bike-infrastructure-funding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poor infrastructure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usa.streetsblog.org\/2019\/02\/11\/walking-and-biking-are-hurt-by-lack-of-national-leadership-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fear of accidents with cars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A switch to more physically active commutes for those who are able <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/livable-communities\/getting-around\/info-2016\/why-bicycling-infrastructure-is-good-for-people-who-dont-ride-bikes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would benefit many<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Biking and walking commutes are associated with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/357\/bmj.j1456\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower risk for heart disease and cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0211779\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have found that cycling improves cognitive function and well-being.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Fake commutes<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While commuting can have negative effects on mood and body, getting out of the house on workdays can really boost mental health for remote workers. In the early days of the pandemic, some people found work days without a commute so disorienting that a fad for \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/01\/18\/success\/fake-commute-meaning-benefits-pandemic-wellness\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fake commutes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d emerged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proponents said the ritual helped shift their mindsets into work mode and combat a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2021.682459\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common downside<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of working from home: the lack of delineation between work and personal time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur brains are very sensitive to environment,\u201d says Kissen. \u201cThe environment we\u2019re in tells the brain, \u2018Now I\u2019m in a place to relax\u2019 or \u2018Now I\u2019m in a place to work.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, even people who love working from home and see no need to signal the work day might consider the benefits of getting out of the house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWork-from-home social isolation is one reason mental health challenges are at an all-time high,\u201d Kissen says. \u201cJust because something feels good and desirable doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s good for us. Eating a cupcake is enjoyable, but it\u2019s not good for cholesterol. I think working in pajamas and not leaving the house is a similar thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, it helps to reframe commute time as an opportunity to gain something, says Kissen, whether it\u2019s time to reflect, listen to a book or music or learn something new.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo matter what your commute is like,\u201d she says, \u201cyou can set yourself up for success.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
