Most of us tackle these invaders head-on with a handful of common products. But if your acne-busting creams, serums and washes aren\u2019t getting results, maybe you have a different condition on your hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosacea can look a lot like acne, but it\u2019s not the same issue at all. Let\u2019s get into their key similarities and differences \u2014 and how you can safely and effectively treat both.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3>Seeing red<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acne is a skin condition where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niams.nih.gov\/health-topics\/acne\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hair follicles become clogged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with dead skin cells, oil and bacteria, triggering inflammation. Pimples are its most common symptom, with a wide variety of presentations: Think <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/unpacking-the-cultural-phenomenon-of-pimple-popping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whiteheads, blackheads and more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as redness, swelling, heat and pain. Acne affects <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamadermatology\/fullarticle\/479093\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to 50 million Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can stem from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/acne\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20368047\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">variety of factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from hormone changes to genetics to diet, medication or stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosacea, on the other hand, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordmedicine25.stanford.edu\/the25\/acne.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">characterized by<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> intense reddening of the skin, visible blood vessels and acne-like bumps or pimples. It\u2019s a relapsing condition that can affect anyone, though it tends to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/rosacea\/what-is\/causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">run in families<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is most common among middle-aged white women. About 14 million Americans experience rosacea. It tends to set in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/rosacea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between ages 30 and 60,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while acne usually makes its first appearance <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/acne\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around puberty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We haven\u2019t found one definitive cause of rosacea, though there are theories: It could be an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosacea.org\/patients\/causes-of-rosacea\/innate-immune-system\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive immune response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that triggers inflammation, or an excessive presence of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosacea.org\/patients\/causes-of-rosacea\/demodex-mites-and-microbes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demodex mites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a microorganism that lives on the skin and releases bacteria when it dies. That said, rosacea flare-ups generally have an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/illnesses-and-conditions\/skin-hair-and-nails\/rosacea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">external trigger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as sun exposure, heat, alcohol, caffeine, spicy food or even strong emotions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because both conditions involve inflammation, redness and pimples, and both often occur on the face, they\u2019re frequently mistaken for one another, says Dr. Cheryl Rosen, a New York-based dermatologist. No wonder \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosacea.org\/blog\/2013\/july\/new-patient-survey-defines-progression-of-rosacea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one 2013 survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the National Rosacea Society found that acne-like bumps are one of the top three symptoms rosacea patients experienced. However, there are some simple ways to tell the two apart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, while acne can be found elsewhere on the body (bacne, anyone?), rosacea <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/rosacea\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353815\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only occurs on the face<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And while rosacea is characterized by widespread redness, the redness from acne is only found right around pimples or bumps. Rosacea bumps <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/health-library\/diseases-and-conditions\/r\/rosacea.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can closely resemble whiteheads,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but if you have a blackhead, you can be confident that you\u2019re just dealing with acne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3>Differences in treatment<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While both acne and rosacea can be treated with topical medications and oral antibiotics, Rosen says the similarities stop there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to acne treatment, the name of the game is getting rid of oil and clearing pores. Topical treatments for acne include astringents, acids and retinoids to help kill the bacteria and exfoliate the skin, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/acne\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20368048\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral meds include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antibiotics and certain birth control pills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for rosacea, on the other hand, focuses on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279475\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reducing inflammation and flushing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This generally comes in a combination of sensitive skincare and prescription drugs. Some courses include topical drugs that reduce flushing by constricting blood vessels and oral antibiotics (most typically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamadermatology\/fullarticle\/189144\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that control inflammation. While some topical treatments for rosacea are prescription, you can find a number of over-the-counter products that will help, like creams containing azelaic acid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While acne and rosacea symptoms can look similar, medication for one can sometimes worsen the other. \u201cPatients with rosacea tend to have sensitive skin, which can be very much irritated by some of the harsher topical medications that are used to treat acne,\u201d says Dr. Robin Evans, a dermatologist in Connecticut. Acne-fighting ingredients like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/rosacea\/triggers\/tips\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glycolic acid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, lactic acid and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/afp\/2002\/0801\/p435.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">topical retinoids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can make rosacea worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This all means it\u2019s essential that you know which condition you\u2019re dealing with, which often requires seeing a professional.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3>Seeing a derm<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You usually don\u2019t have to see a dermatologist to treat pimples. However, if your acne is particularly persistent or painful or becomes cystic, or if you can\u2019t seem to treat even the slightest bumps with OTC products, you might want to make an appointment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no specific test for rosacea, so dermatologists will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/rosacea\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20353820\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make a diagnosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by examining your skin, learning your medical and family history and ruling out other skin conditions, like psoriasis or lupus. Once you have a diagnosis, the dermatologist will determine the care protocol that\u2019s best for your individual case, which might involve prescriptions, skincare products, trigger avoidance or some combination of these.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoth conditions can be difficult to deal with,\u201d says Rosen. \u201cSo it\u2019s important to get the help of a medical professional if you\u2019re struggling with either one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you do, the outlook is rosy \u2014 at least in the figurative sense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
