In fact, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatrictimes.com\/view\/mind-gut-connection-what-it-and-how-did-it-evolve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mind-gut connection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may play an even greater role in our health and emotional well-being than scientists currently understand. Gaining better understanding of this link may also provide insight into the prevalence of digestive diseases in modern life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6453579\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are estimated to affect nearly two-thirds of Americans on a weekly basis.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hese <a href=\"https:\/\/mygi.health\/\">symptoms<\/a> may include<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abdominal pain, excess gas, bowel incontinence, constipation, diarrhea, disrupted swallowing, heartburn and nausea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many factors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/7040-gastrointestinal-diseases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be responsible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for GI symptoms, including taking certain medications, traveling or other disruptions in your usual routine and not getting enough exercise. But another, often overlooked factor in GI distress is your mental health. But why?<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<p><b>The\u00a0 connection between mental and physical health<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical understanding of the mind-gut connection is evolving, but one thing is becoming clear: Your digestive system can have a direct impact on your mood and mental health, and vice-versa. In fact, the digestive system \u2014 the 100 million nerve cells that line your GI tract from your esophagus all the way down to your rectum \u2014 comprises a semi-autonomous nervous system of its own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That nervous system, called the enteric nervous system, functions under the auspices of the central nervous system and its control panel, your brain and spine. But the enteric nervous system can operate surprisingly well by itself, even with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK11097\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimal input<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from your brain and spinal cord. This extensive, self-reliant neural network is sometimes even described by scientists as a \u201clittle brain\u201d or \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/gut-second-brain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second brain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The job of the enteric nervous system is to digest food, but it does more than that. It processes information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think about it, you\u2019ve likely experienced plenty of moments where your &#8220;second brain&#8221; was hard at work. Maybe you\u2019ve gotten the sensation of \u201cbutterflies&#8221; in your stomach right before a big test or a presentation. Or maybe your intuition warned you against the dangers of a particular situation by way of a sinking sensation in the pit of your gut \u2014 aka, a \u201cgut feeling.\u201d You may even use adages like \u201ctrust your gut\u201d to pump yourself up under ambiguous circumstances that call for tough decisions. These common experiences and the adages that describe them all point to a mind-gut connection, reflecting the unexpected intelligence that lies within our GI tract.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>What we know about the mind\/gut connection<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key connective mechanism between the mind and gut is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/vagus-nerve-stimulation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the vagus nerve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the longest nerve in our bodies and a major component of our nervous system. Its job is to regulate our body\u2019s response to stress, among critical bodily functions like our digestion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the 1980s, scientists have found that certain medical conditions can be treated by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyt.2018.00044\/full#:~:text=The%20vagus%20nerve%20is%20an,%2C%20satiety%2C%20and%20energy%20homeostasis.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stimulating the vagus nerve directly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These include psychiatric disorders like treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. There\u2019s evidence that stimulating vagal fibers in the gut triggers certain brain systems \u2014 setting off the activity of neurotransmitters that influence mood. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also some indication that<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/full\/10.1073\/pnas.1102999108\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gut bacteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have a beneficial effect on mood, partly because of its interaction with the vagus nerve.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Problems in your gut that might be caused by anxiety\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your gut can influence your mood. And vice versa. Your mood may also influence your gut. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchicagomedicine.org\/forefront\/gastrointestinal-articles\/stress-and-stomach-pain-when-should-you-see-a-specialist#:~:text=When%20we're%20stressed%2C%20hormones,our%20gut%2C%20causing%20GI%20discomfort.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress and anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in particular, have been shown to manifest in very real symptoms of gastric upset<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Indigestion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stomach cramps, diarrhea, constipation, and loss of appetite are just some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/learn-from-us\/from-the-experts\/blog-posts\/consumer\/how-calm-anxious-stomach-brain-gut-connection\">digestive disturbances<\/a> that may arise from prolonged emotional distress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It all goes back to the brain-gut connection. Stress causes the release of hormones into the digestive tract that can inhibit gut motility. In other words, stress inhibits our stomach and intestines from properly processing food and moving waste through the body. This digestive disruption can also throw off our gut flora, the delicate microorganisms that live in our digestive tracts and help with digestion, which can then cause further GI problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of acute digestive disturbances, it might be a good idea to visit an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/urgent-care\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urgent care provider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For more chronic and long-term issues, your primary care doctor may recommend that you make an appointment with a gastroenterologist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Ways to improve the mind\/gut connection\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are additional measures you can take to improve your mind-gut connection, and thus, your GI health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practice mindfulness. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindfulness is a technique that improves mood by redirecting awareness onto the present moment.\u00a0 It can help you st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rengthen the mind-gut connection and reinforce the health of its corresponding parts by reducing stress.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try therapy.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Like mindfulness, engaging in some type of therapy, most classically cognitive behavioral therapy, can also reduce stress for a better mind\/body connection. There are many different types of therapy to choose from, which you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/7-common-types-of-therapy-explained\/)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">read about here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay hydrated. W<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ater is so important for our body\u2019s ability to function that the body has developed several mechanisms to ensure we\u2019re getting enough of it. For example, there&#8217;s a hormone that tells you when you&#8217;re thirsty.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quenching your thirst by drinking water will calm down that hormone&#8217;s signals to your brain, beginning in your gut.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
