What&#8217;s the Difference?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever been sidelined by throbbing head pain, you may have wondered at what point your tension headache was actually a full-blown migraine.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/healthcare-trends\/chronic-illness-can-make-it-hard-to-trust-your-body\/\">Migraine headaches<\/a> are relatively common: They affect about 10 percent of people worldwide. Women are almost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2787727\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more likely to experience them than men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how can you tell the difference between a migraine and a garden-variety headache? Which doctor should you seek for help? And what are your treatment options? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We talked with experts to learn how patients can distinguish between migraines and tension headaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Migraines<\/h3>\n<p><strong><i>Causes<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite their prevalence, researchers aren\u2019t quite sure what <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20180702-the-sexist-history-of-migraine-may-affect-research-today\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physiological responses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cause people to develop migraines.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One theory is that \u201cmigraine headaches originate via a complex interaction between the nerve that supplies sensation to the head and face, blood vessels in the brain and the meninges, a protective membrane around the brain,\u201d says Dr. Kapil Sachdeva, a neurologist at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Illinois.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite uncertainty about the exact cause, experts do know that a migraine \u201cgenerates an enhanced nervous system experience, meaning every one of our sensory systems is in overdrive,\u201d says Dr. Wade Cooper, a neurologist at University of Michigan Health. That\u2019s why migraine headaches can also include symptoms like light and sound sensitivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Triggers<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal fluctuations, sleep dysfunction and certain foods, \u201cincluding red wine, artificial sweeteners and a bunch of other less common food additives, like MSG or certain food dyes,\u201d can trigger migraines, Cooper says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many women who suffer from migraines experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/8260-menstrual-migraines-hormone-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worse symptoms around menstruation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/migraine-headache\/expert-answers\/migraine-headache\/faq-20058505\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changes in barometric pressure and humidity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also trigger migraine headaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Severity<\/i>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraines are debilitating. If you\u2019ve never experienced one, Cooper likens the headache pain to a bad hangover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can envision someone with a hangover wearing sunglasses the next morning, wanting everyone to be quiet around them,\u201d he says. Light and sound sensitivity are also common symptoms of a migraine, along with nausea and vomiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Other symptoms<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some migraine sufferers experience a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/migraine-with-aura\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352072\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visual aura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that impacts their vision: \u201cAn electrical wave on the back of the brain kind of makes you hallucinate, with spots and sparkles in your vision,\u201d Cooper says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraines can also occur on either side of the head or both sides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cContrary to popular belief, a migraine does not have to be located on one side of the head, and, like tension headaches, can be located on both sides,\u201d Sachdeva says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Diagnosis<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first stop for treating headache pain is your primary care doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTypically, migraines are initially managed by a primary care physician, particularly if the headaches are infrequent and respond well to initial management,\u201d Sachdeva says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors generally diagnose migraines based on a patient\u2019s symptoms without any extra testing. But your provider might order brain imaging or a blood test to rule out other causes if you present with red flags like loss of vision or movement, facial droop, history of cancer or headaches occurring for the first time after age 50.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not getting relief after seeing a primary care provider, your headaches get worse or you experience unusual symptoms like loss of vision, it might be time to see a neurologist for more specialized treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Treatment<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no cure for migraines. \u201cBut with treatment, most patients can have a good quality of life,\u201d Sachdeva says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment options are plentiful, including over-the-counter painkillers, prescription devices and lifestyle changes. Some ways to treat and manage migraines include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Over-the-counter medications. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4033962\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Tylenol and Advil are the first line of defense for many migraine sufferers; Cooper suggests ibuprofen gel caps, which work faster than tablets. Some people find relief from Excedrin, which is a combination of acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prescription drugs. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For years, doctors have prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/headaches.org\/facts-about-triptans\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triptans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to decrease migraine sensitivity. \u201cThese are very safe and effective, but not everyone responds to them,\u201d Cooper says. Other people do better with newer classes of medication like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/gepants-ditans-therapies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ditans and gepants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two other oral medications that can treat acute migraines, or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/understanding-migrainecefaly-for-migraine-prevention\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefaly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a prescription device that stimulates a specific nerve to treat acute migraine attacks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lifestyle changes. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people find relief by changing their habits. \u201cIt comes down to the same thing you always hear: get good sleep, eat healthy, exercise,\u201d Cooper says.\u00a0 \u201cExercises like yoga influence a mindfulness concept, which can be helpful in reducing migraine susceptibility.\u201d says. Plus, he adds, \u201cwhen you exercise, your body releases hormones that lower your body\u2019s ability to trigger or bring out a migraine attack.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cutting caffeine. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a serious coffee habit, reducing your caffeine intake can help with managing migraines. This might seem counterintuitive, since caffeine is an active ingredient in OTC migraine medications like Excedrin; Cooper says caffeine works well in small doses to treat migraines, but overdoing it can ultimately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/migraines-headaches\/triggers-caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agitate your headaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suffer from chronic migraines, occurring at least 15 days per month, you might consider preventive treatments, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Botox<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Patients receive Botox injections in the scalp every three months to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29939406\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce migraine frequency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt takes about two to three months to kick in [after the first treatment], but once it kicks in, it\u2019s quite effective in reducing the frequency and severity of migraine attacks,\u201d Cooper says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Supplements. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your doctor might recommend a vitamin supplement, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK507271\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnesium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4359851\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin B2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (riboflavin), to keep migraines at bay.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Tension headaches<\/h3>\n<p><strong><i>Causes<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tension headaches \u2014 the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/9639-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common type of headache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 are \u201ctypically caused by factors extrinsic to the brain itself, such as stress, muscle tightness or stiffness or an increased sensitivity to pain around the head and neck,\u201d Sachdeva says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Triggers<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything from stress to jaw-clenching can trigger a tension headache. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/000797.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other headache triggers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include alcohol use, caffeine overuse or withdrawal and the common cold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Severity<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tension headaches are a pain, but they\u2019re mild compared to a migraine; the Mayo Clinic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/tension-headache\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353977\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">likens the feeling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a tight band around the head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the pain is more intense, you might be dealing with a migraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy definition, a tension headache cannot be severe and cannot pick up the cardinal features of migraine,\u201d Cooper says. \u201cIf someone gets both light and sound sensitivity, or if someone gets nausea or throws up, we call that a migraine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Diagnosis<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like migraines, most tension headaches <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/headache\/tension-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are diagnosed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on a patient\u2019s description of their symptoms. Some neurologists perform a physical exam to feel the muscles on the side of the head and identify tightness and irritation, Cooper says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Treatment<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Over-the-counter medications. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re dealing with a tension headache, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthblog.uofmhealth.org\/health-management\/best-otc-meds-and-supplements-to-treat-headache\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs like Motrin, Advil or Aleve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hot or cold packs. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/headaches.org\/hot-and-cold-packs-showers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying a heating pad or ice pack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can ease the pain of a tension headache.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lifestyle changes. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/tension-headache\/in-depth\/headaches\/art-20047631\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating well and staying hydrated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help you avoid tension headaches, and as with migraines, managing stress and getting enough sleep can also ward off headaches. Researchers also have found a link between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31667736\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practicing yoga and reduced headache frequency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly for tension headaches.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Other types of headaches<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tension headaches and migraines are the most common headaches, but they\u2019re not the only types that are extant. Sinus headaches (a byproduct of a sinus infection that causes pain in the sinus cavities) and cluster headaches (characterized by a sharp stabbing pain) are two other culprits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers aren\u2019t entirely sure what causes cluster headaches, but they suspect it\u2019s related to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/headache\/cluster-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sudden release of histamine or serotonin in the body<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although cluster headache pain can be intense, it\u2019s not the same as migraine pain, Cooper says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople with migraine headaches want to sit as still as possible,\u201d he says. \u201cCluster headache is a very brief, short-lived, incredibly intense headache associated with an inability to sit still.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many patients also mistake migraines for sinus headaches, Cooper says, but sinus headaches are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/sinus-headache\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relatively uncommon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re unsure what kind of headache you\u2019re experiencing, a doctor can identify the cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other types of headaches that occur under very particular circumstances, like only at night or in a certain region of the head, could warrant a visit to a neurologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
