{"id":19706,"date":"2022-06-16T09:00:15","date_gmt":"2022-06-16T14:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=19706"},"modified":"2023-03-06T15:51:39","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T20:51:39","slug":"the-risks-of-an-undiagnosed-deviated-septum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/the-risks-of-an-undiagnosed-deviated-septum\/","title":{"rendered":"The Risks of an Undiagnosed Deviated Septum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a decent chance you have a deviated septum \u2014 a displacement of the thin wall between your nostrils that can make one nasal passage smaller than the other.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entnet.org\/content\/deviated-septum\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of Americans have this condition, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology\u2013Head and Neck Surgery Foundation. For most, a deviated septum presents no symptoms and carries no risk.\u00a0But for some, a deviated septum can affect breathing and overall health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, some people with deviated septums might not catch the issue until they focus on fixing other problems. For instance, one study found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33665723\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">66 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of patients seeking relief for allergy-related congestion also had deviated septums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how to tell if you have a deviated septum, the risks it carries and what type of treatment can manage these risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What is a deviated septum? How might you know if you have one?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your nasal septum is the thin wall of cartilage between your left and right nasal passages. It\u2019s considered \u201cdeviated\u201d if it&#8217;s off-center or displaced to one side, making one nasal passage narrower than the other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThough some people do suffer injuries that can damage the nose and cause a deviated septum, for most people, it\u2019s congenital \u2014 they were born with it, &#8221; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/profiles\/madeleine-r-schaberg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr.\u00a0Madeleine Schaberg,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an otolaryngology specialist and surgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many who are affected, this asymmetry is slight, even unnoticeable. Yet for some, the asymmetry might be debilitating. Symptoms of a severely deviated septum include facial pressure or pain, sinus headaches and a greater likelihood of nosebleeds, sinus infections or sleep apnea.\u00a0But the most significant sign is impaired breathing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You usually can\u2019t breathe well through one side of the nose, Schaberg points out. \u201cYou can breathe a little bit through one side of the nose, but not at all through the other,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u201dYou may notice this more when you\u2019re sick with a cold or suffering from allergies.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schaberg says she typically sees people come in for deviated septum diagnoses in their mid-to-late 20s. They\u2019ll often realize they might be affected after reading a news article or taking a yoga class and being unable to breathe through their nose, she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What are the risks of an untreated deviated septum?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In severe cases, a deviated septum presents several health risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Worsening symptoms, including difficulty breathing:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A deviated septum is not a condition that will resolve itself on its own. Its symptoms (trouble breathing through either nostril, facial pressure, sinus headaches, etc.) will persist and become more problematic with age.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Recurrent sinus infections (sinusitis): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinus infections happen when fluid builds up in the sinuses, which are air-filled pockets in the face. A deviated septum could prevent fluids from draining the sinuses effectively when you have a cold or allergies, allowing germs to grow and causing an infection. In rare cases, these infections could spread elsewhere in the body, leading to serious issues such as blindness and meningitis.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sleep apnea: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A deviated septum can contribute to obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing is interrupted during sleep. Sleep apnea can cause loud snoring and daytime tiredness. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to more serious health issues like high blood pressure and heart trouble.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, a deviated septum is not life-threatening for most people; it\u2019s more of a quality-of-life issue. While it\u2019s OK to breathe through your mouth, \u201cbreathing through your nose humidifies and filters the air, making it more comfortable than breathing through your mouth,\u201d Schaberg says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>How do you fix it?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think you may have a deviated septum, the first step is getting a proper diagnosis from a specialist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour primary care physician isn\u2019t looking into your nose with a camera \u2014 they\u2019re looking at the outside or superficially inside,\u201d Schaberg says. \u201cAn ENT [ear, nose and throat specialist] will use a small speculum or camera to look at all the structures in there. There are lots of things that can cause obstructions. With a small camera, we can tell you what the actual problem is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing a deviated septum may require a reconstructive surgery called septoplasty<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Typically an outpatient procedure, a septoplasty costs approximately $3,500 and up out of pocket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe do a ton of surgeries for this,\u201d Schaberg says. \u201cIt\u2019s very low-risk. It\u2019s not one-size-fits-all \u2014 it\u2019s tailored to the specific patient \u2014 but it should take about two hours, and you can go home the same day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people feel congested for a few days after surgery, but within a week to 10 days, any underlying symptoms should disappear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWithin a month, everything should be where it should be,\u201d Schaberg says. \u201cPatients are very happy with the results.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
