It plays a key role in the day-to-day interactions. A person with good mental health is much likelier to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.passporthealthusa.com\/employer-solutions\/blog\/2018-12-how-does-mental-health-affect-work-performance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thrive in their job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than someone suffering from a diagnosed mental illness or other, acute mental health challenges \u2014 challenges that are, unfortunately, all too common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/Learn-More\/Mental-Health-By-the-Numbers\">44 million American adults<\/a> are affected by mental health conditions like depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. These and other issues can dramatically hinder performance at work. In fact, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/mental-health-and-substance-use\/promotion-prevention\/mental-health-in-the-workplace\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WHO) reports that the global economy loses roughly one trillion dollars every year because of impairments in productivity caused by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression and anxiety. The potential economic impact of all mental health struggles may be beyond measure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite its massive impact on job productivity, mental health <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcleanhospital.org\/essential\/what-employers-need-know-about-mental-health-workplace\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often goes unacknowledged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by employers. This oversight can be detrimental to both employers and employees, alike. In fact, everyone stands to benefit from workplaces that recognize mental health as a priority and take concrete measures to support everyone&#8217;s mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Effects of positive mental health in the workplace<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no coincidence that the exhaustion and stress of the pandemic triggered a period of unprecedented worker turnover. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/05\/employers-boost-mental-wellness-benefits-amid-the-great-resignation.html#:~:text=The%20Covid%2D19%20pandemic%20drove,employees%20walking%20out%20the%20door.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">November 2021 survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed nearly 90% of respondents (all American workers age 25 and older) either recently left their jobs, or planned to do so due to burnout and a lack of workplace support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The &#8220;Great Resignation,&#8221; as this period in time has come to be called, has been wake-up call for employers that had never recognized the importance of cultivating an uplifting company culture. The silver lining for everyone involved is that the problem is fixable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as an employer\u2019s lack of mental health support can contribute to employee attrition, the opposite is true, as well. <a href=\"https:\/\/join.modernhealth.com\/future-of-mental-health-2021-report-forrester.html?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=od_summary_blog\">In one survey, <\/a><\/span>79 percent o<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f employees said they&#8217;d be<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0more inclined to stay at a company that provided meaningful mental health benefits and resources.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Harvard Business Review <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/10\/its-a-new-era-for-mental-health-at-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that workplace mental health resources increased productivity, boosted staff morale and helped foster a sense of trust and safety for employees. Workers who felt that their mental health was supported, overall, were 26% less likely to report one or more symptoms of a mental health disorder in the past year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Effects of negative mental health in the workplace<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various mental health challenges can negatively affect a worker\u2019s productivity and safety in the workplace. For example,\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/workplacehealthpromotion\/tools-resources\/workplace-health\/mental-health\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression typically interferes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a worker\u2019s ability to complete physical job tasks about 20% of the time, and reduces cognitive performance about 35% of the time. For those who work in environments with physical requirements, depression can lead to injuries on the job.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lack of mental health support at work can also contribute to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/what-a-burnout-diagnosis-can-and-cant-do\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burnout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which the WHO defines as a \u201csyndrome conceptualized from resulting chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.\u201d Workers experiencing job-related burnout can help counter these toxic symptoms by practicing gratitude and self-compassion, and focusing on the positive aspects of their jobs. But ultimately, employers must recognize that it\u2019s up to them to ensure that they\u2019re creating a supportive work environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/workplacehealthpromotion\/tools-resources\/workplace-health\/mental-health\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC outlines steps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> employers can take to support employees\u2019 mental health. For example, they can offer free or subsidized clinical screenings for depression and other mental health disorders.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employers can also support employees by giving them the resources to find a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/how-to-find-the-right-mental-health-professional-for-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> professional that meets their individual needs.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Some companies may opt to offer their employees free or discounted services from designated mental health care providers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/how-to-handle-working-from-home-psychologically\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote employees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need mental health support, too. In addition to providing extensive low-cost mental healthcare benefits, employers can implement simple measures that help remote staff maintain a consistent daily work routine and feel connected to their colleagues. Employers might, for instance, encourage remote employees to attend meetings with their webcams turned on and to maintain (more or less) standard work hours. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nm.org\/healthbeat\/healthy-tips\/health-benefits-of-having-a-routine#:~:text=Your%20daily%20routine%20influences%20your,just%20a%20little%20extra%20planning.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day-to-day routine consistency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/workforce-wellness\/wellness-topics\/interpersonal-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interpersonal connectivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are both shown to support good mental health, in work and in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, employers can empower staff members to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/workplacehealthpromotion\/tools-resources\/workplace-health\/mental-health\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have a voice in conversations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about how to address potential sources of workplace stress.
