There&#8217;s actually a lot more that goes into self-esteem than you might think.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who feel good about themselves and their accomplishments have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/adult-health\/in-depth\/self-esteem\/art-20047976\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high self-esteem. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This gives them courage to be themselves. On the other hand, people who put themselves down and don\u2019t take pride in their accomplishments have low self-esteem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While much of the conversation focuses on these two groups, there\u2019s also a third category: false self-esteem. When someone\u2019s beliefs that form their self-esteem don\u2019t match reality, we call this false self esteem. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be the result of overly negative thoughts stemming from mental health issues, or it can be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/228079879_A_question_of_false_self-esteem_Organization-based_self-esteem_and_narcissism_in_organizational_contexts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form of narcissism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that gives an inflated sense of self. In both scenarios, false self-esteem may lead to negative consequences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narcissism-fueled false self-esteem often leads to issues in interpersonal relationships and in the workplace. False self-esteem caused by negative self-talk can worsen symptoms of anxiety and depression. In fact, low-self esteem might <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acamh.org\/research-digest\/self-esteem-anxiety-depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase your likelihood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of developing mental illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developing authentic self-esteem isn\u2019t a linear process. With so many external influences and mental health factors at play, it\u2019s a struggle for many people. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how you can bolster your self-esteem and confidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Confidence<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Believing in yourself is one of the biggest keys for building confidence. And sometimes you really just have to fake it until you make it, whether that&#8217;s in negotiations, job interviews and other anxiety-inducing scenarios. However, in the longterm, you really want to make sure you&#8217;re developing authentic, concrete self confidence, for the sake of your self-esteem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here are some helpful self confidence-building strategies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Set realistic goals.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Accomplishing goals can boost your self confidence. Rinse and repeat.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Repeat encouraging mantras.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mantra-based meditation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8949812\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduces symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for mental health disorders like anxiety and depression, giving you a clearer mind and the opportunity to build self confidence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exercise.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The endorphins you produce while you exercise have the power to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27137088\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ease depression symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Presenting a fake persona on social media is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0747563219303073\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sign of both narcissism and low self esteem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Your quirky, intelligent, fun-loving self will thank you\u2014as will your friends and family.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Envy<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comparing yourself to others is bound to stir up feelings of envy and damage your self-esteem. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than compare yourself to others, reflect on the strides you\u2019ve made. Appreciate how far you&#8217;ve come and where you\u2019re headed. You have so much to be proud of, and reflecting on it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/figure\/Benefits-of-reflection_fig1_337634760\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helps improve self-awareness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so you can build self-esteem.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Expectations<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a thin line to walk when it comes to expectations. Healthy expectations can help you create the life you want, but unrealistic expectations can set you up for disappointment. Life is unpredictable and ever-changing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid setting expectations based on romanticized ideals. While you can still want the best for yourself, you should allow some flexibility for imperfection. Give your best effort in friendships and relationships, and feel free to expect the same from others.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Fear<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facing different fears you have in life can help increase your self-esteem because it can show you that you can overcome challenges. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk to new people, speak up in group settings, and take reasonable risks even if they scare or intimidate you. You&#8217;ll be all the better for it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Relationships<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The relationships you have with other people have a significant influence over your self-esteem. Toxic behaviors like abuse and neglect, or even cheating in romantic relationships, can wear on your self-esteem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can develop a framework for your relationships that supports and even improves your self-esteem. Negative self talk focuses your attention on negative things.
