Luckily, by taking steps to boost your immune system, you\u2019ll not only reduce your risk of catching a cold, but also up the odds that if you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get sick, your symptoms won\u2019t be too bad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are eight things you can do today to strengthen your immunity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Exercise regularly<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not breaking news that exercise is good for you, but did you know that it can also bolster your immune system?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Not<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only does exercise likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fimmu.2018.00648\/full\">improve<\/a> your immunity over your lifespan, but one single sweat session can also help your body more effectively fight disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both cardio and resistance training<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/007165.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appear to give your immune system a leg up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So if you&#8217;re looking to have a better defense system, try to find a balanced workout routine that you\u2019ll stick to. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/007165.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That might mean<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> daily walks and a few gym sessions per week.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Eat a healthy, balanced diet<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/connect.uclahealth.org\/2021\/03\/19\/want-to-boost-immunity-look-to-the-gut\/#:~:text=70%25%20of%20the%20immune%20system,diet%20affects%20the%20immune%20system.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 70%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your immune system lives in your gut, so what you eat may impact your immune function. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/nutrition-and-immunity\/#:~:text=A%20high%2Dfiber%20plant%2Drich,to%20stimulate%20immune%20cell%20activity.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to eat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a balanced, gut-healthy diet, which includes plenty of fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, as well as probiotic foods, like kimchi, kombucha, or yogurt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to avoid eating too many sweets, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.weill.cornell.edu\/news\/2021\/03\/excess-blood-sugar-disrupts-immune-system-proteins-and-promotes-atherosclerosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sugar spikes can actually suppress immune function<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Processed foods (like most commercial snacks, crackers, chips, etc.) are also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4074336\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a rise in inflammation, which can tax your immune system. Additionally, while some old wives&#8217; tales prop up cold remedies with alcohol \u2014 alcohol actually <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/6-surprising-ways-alcohol-affects-health-not-just-liver\/\">hampers<\/a> the immune system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Hydrate properly<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your bloodstream is the highway of the immune system, transporting nutrients, fluid and important messages around the body. Since blood plasma is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/givingblood.org\/about-blood\/blood-components.aspx#:~:text=Plasma%20is%2090%20percent%20water,such%20as%20vitamins%20and%20hormones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around 90% water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, proper hydration is essential to this process.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Shoot for drinking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ssihi.uci.edu\/tip\/hydration-for-immune-system\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about half your body weight in ounces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of water per day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Get enough sleep<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like your brain, your immune system can\u2019t function well without proper sleep<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Skimping on sleep has\u00a0 been shown to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42003-021-02825-4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce levels of infection-fighting antibodies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ideally, you should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.com\/en\/media-room\/covid-19\/better-sleep-habits-to-strengthen-immunity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aim for<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seven to nine hours of quality shut-eye per night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Manage stress<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress can make the symptoms of seasonal illness worse for a few reasons. First, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/what-happens-when-your-immune-system-gets-stressed-out\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it decreases the number of disease-fighting cells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your body, making it more difficult to fend off infection. Being chronically stressed can also cause high levels of cortisol, which weakens your body\u2019s natural anti-inflammatory response, leading to chronic inflammation and more illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are lots of effective ways to keep your stress at a healthy level. This might mean meditating, getting regular exercise, seeing a therapist or even just avoiding situations that you know will stress you out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Understand your health risks<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have an underlying condition, seasonal illness can hit you harder than it hits others. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cold-and-flu\/cold-guide\/colds-chronic-medical-conditions#1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with asthma, diabetes, heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0or other chronic health conditions are at a higher risk for complications from illness, and also tend to have more severe symptoms. It\u2019s important to be aware of any health risks you might have, and take steps to manage them. Talk with your doctor about what you should do to keep any chronic conditions under control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Consider a seasonal flu vaccine<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 2010 to 2020, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/burden\/faq.htm#:~:text=CDC%20estimates%20that%20from%202010,annually%20in%20the%20United%20States.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between 9 and 41 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people got the flu each year. The flu is pretty miserable, but you can substantially reduce your chances of contracting it by getting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/healthcare-trends\/its-even-more-important-to-get-a-flu-shot-this-year\/\">flu shot<\/a>. You can get a flu vaccine through your doctor or at most pharmacies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/flu\/in-depth\/flu-shots\/art-20048000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors recommend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0getting your shot sometime in September or October (though if you\u2019re past that window, it still helps!).<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting sick is awful, but sometimes unavoidable.
