I thought I only ended up with a black eye and a throbbing headache, until I was diagnosed with a concussion. I was surprised \u2014 concussions were just for athletes, right?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we hear plenty of news about people getting concussions due to contact sports like football, they can happen to anyone with a head. The good news is that they\u2019re relatively easy to recognize and treat if you know what to look out for. We break down everything below.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Concussions 101<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that occurs when something bumps or jolts the head hard enough for your head to move rapidly back and forth. When this happens, the brain basically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/headsup\/basics\/concussion_whatis.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twists and bounces inside the skull<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.concussionalliance.org\/what-happens-to-your-brain-deeper-dive\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breaks apart neurons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the messengers of your brain. This throws off the neurons\u2019 delicate chemical balance and makes it harder for them to function.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite how violent this sounds, medical providers still describe individual concussions as \u201cmild\u201d brain injuries, because they\u2019re usually not life-threatening and their effects tend to be temporary. While symptoms are immediate, they\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aans.org\/en\/Patients\/Neurosurgical-Conditions-and-Treatments\/Concussion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not typically permanent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, your brain is your body\u2019s control center, so when it\u2019s damaged, there are repercussions. Concussions manifest differently depending on the severity of the initial injury, but some of the typical symptoms are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short-term memory loss (for instance, an inability to recall what happened before the injury)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clumsiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falling asleep or losing consciousness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurred vision or dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty concentrating<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The nonathlete\u2019s dilemma<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s true that if you play football, you\u2019re more likely to get a concussion. Between 2014 and 2019, there were an average of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nflpa.com\/posts\/whats-good-for-the-players-is-good-for-the-game\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">247 reported concussions per year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the NFL, and around 10 percent of college football players and 20 percent of high school football players <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.protectthebrain.org\/Brain-Injury-Research\/What-is-a-Concussion-.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sustain brain injuries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a given season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are plenty of other ways to get a concussion. Your brain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/concussion\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355594\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is delicate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s the consistency of gelatin, cushioned from everyday bumps by important fluid in your skull \u2014 but any bump or jolt that\u2019s too violent will overwhelm that protective layer. Life is full of unforeseen bumps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falls (off a barstool or otherwise) are the most common cause of a concussion, but there are others. Dr. Laura Goldberg, a pediatric sports medicine specialist at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, says that any unexpected blow to the head can lead to a concussion. \u201cThis can happen by standing up quickly and hitting an object above, like a cabinet or bunk bed, or falling off your bike without a helmet,\u201d she says. Another common cause is sudden acceleration or deceleration, which can happen in car crashes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Test as old as time<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concussions are usually diagnosed through observation and patient self-reporting. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, fancy imaging scans like MRIs and CTs typically won\u2019t even register a concussion, since the injury is microscopic and metabolic in nature<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you ever had to take a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diagnostics\/22267-concussion-test\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cfollow my finger\u201d concussion test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in high school, you\u2019re familiar with one of the standbys used to diagnose the head injury. \u201cFollowing a finger with your eyes evaluates several things,\u201d Goldberg says. \u201cWe use it to evaluate your ability to follow instructions, to focus both eyes on an object and your tolerance to eye motion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there\u2019s no one test that\u2019s universally used to diagnose the head injury. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Michael McGrath, an instructor at the University of Washington&#8217;s School of Medicine, says doctors often use something called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/headsup\/pdfs\/providers\/ace-a.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acute concussion evaluation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ACE) tool, a comprehensive questionnaire on everything from symptoms to family medical history. However, there\u2019s no one universal test.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides assessing all of the symptoms listed above, doctors will also check for focal neurological changes, which can indicate an internal head injury that needs emergency care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re at home, trying to figure out if anything\u2019s wrong, make sure you\u2019re seeing objects and people in your vision symmetrically. \u201cIf anything is unequal, it\u2019s best to go to the ER,\u201d Goldberg says.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>A heads-up on treatment<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In certain cases, a concussion merits a trip to the emergency room, like if a person is losing consciousness, vomiting repeatedly, slurring their speech or experiencing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/concussion\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355594\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other extreme symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But generally, it\u2019s okay to see a primary care doctor or sports medicine doctor 24 to 48 hours after the injury. And that old warning about not letting someone with a concussion fall asleep lest they slip into a coma? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/is-it-safe-to-sleep-after-a-concussion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Untrue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If a concussed person doesn\u2019t need emergency treatment, it\u2019s okay to let them snooze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most concussions, the treatment protocol is nothing \u2014 literally. Recovery requires your brain cells to rebalance their levels of chemicals, which were thrown off by an influx of calcium post-injury. Limit exposure to video games, loud music, prolonged screen time, or mental activities requiring high levels of focus and concentration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healing requires a lot of energy, so it\u2019s vital that patients conserve as much as they can. Post-concussion, patients are encouraged to avoid any strenuous or even moderate physical and mental activities. Overexertion during this time period can lengthen the time it takes for your brain to heal. \u201cTreatment really depends on the severity of the concussion,\u201d McGrath says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concussions are scary.
