After an emergency surgery, I spent more than six weeks hobbling around on crutches. When I was finally able to ditch them, my healing journey wasn\u2019t quite over. I embarked on a new one: physical therapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it wasn\u2019t as dramatic as surgery or scaling crowded subway staircases with crutches, it allowed me to completely regain mobility \u2014 and walk again by late July.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"squiggle\" \/>\n<h3>Let\u2019s get physical<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While traditional therapy focuses on your mind and mental health, physical therapy focuses on the, you guessed it: physical. Physical therapists go through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apta.org\/your-career\/careers-in-physical-therapy\/becoming-a-pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extensive training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help people heal injuries through exercises and movements that condition muscles and build strength.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While surgeries like mine certainly account for their fair share of PT visits, you typically don\u2019t need to have some big accident or a diagnosed condition to need physical therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cPeople often believe their limitations don\u2019t warrant a visit to a physical therapist because there wasn\u2019t an injury, like a car\u00a0 accident, a sports injury or some moment in time that caused a structural injury,\u201d says Abby Halpin, a physical therapist and owner of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forteperformancept.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forte Performance &amp; Physical Therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cUnfortunately, that leads to people not getting the care they need.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, Halpin says, if you\u2019re experiencing pain or reduced range of motion that impedes your ability to go about your daily life, physical therapy is probably a good idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few different issues you can address through physical therapy:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carpal tunnel syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/rehabilitation-after-stroke#:~:text=The%20aim%20of%20physical%20therapy,daily%20activities%20is%20occupational%20therapy.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovery from a stroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sports-related injuries, like tennis elbow, runner\u2019s knee or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/what-to-know-about-concussions-even-if-youre-not-an-athlete\/\">concussion<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic floor dysfunction\/urinary incontinence<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neck and back pain (Halpin says low back and neck pain are the most common reasons people see a physical therapist.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What to expect at your first visit<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe first visit is my favorite,\u201d says Halpin. \u201cThis is when a patient comes in and tells their story.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this first appointment, also called the initial evaluation, a physical therapist talks with a patient to understand why they came in and what they hope to get out of treatment. They will make sure to understand what the problem is, when it started and what types of activities exacerbate it. They typically check in on what you do for work or fun to understand what physical demands you&#8217;re facing on a daily basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the evaluation, the PT might also touch or move your body in certain ways to assess mobility and better understand what is causing pain or impeding movement. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on this assessment, they will create a recovery plan, which will include a set of exercises and lifestyle changes patients can work with at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What happens next<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subsequent appointments are all about measuring progress. You\u2019ll perform the exercises you\u2019ve been doing at home in order to show the therapist how you\u2019re progressing, and discuss whether things are feeling better or worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your physical therapist might also perform some manual treatments, such as massage or moving joints around in the socket, ultrasound therapy, or hook you up to a small device that uses an electric current to relieve pain. (This is called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transcutaneous electrical neuromuscular stimulation.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical therapy sessions generally last about 30 to 60 minutes. You may go weekly, every other week or several times a week. Your schedule depends on your particular issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The lowdown on recovery<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, your recovery time really depends on the extent of your injury. \u201cThis is a very specific case by case scenario that\u2019s determined by the patient\u2019s progress and the professional\u2019s opinion,\u201d says Sandra Gail Frayna, a physical therapist and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson-pt.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hudson Premier Physical Therapy &amp; Sports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the factors that will determine your recovery time:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The severity of the injury<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For instance, I went to PT for way longer after breaking my femur than when I got a small fracture in my wrist. (I\u2019m accident-prone.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The injured body part <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different parts of your body heal at different rates. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruh.nhs.uk\/patients\/patient_information\/ORT052_Advice_after_a_soft_tissue_injury.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soft tissue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15241-bone-fractures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tend to heal in about six to eight weeks, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journalofprolotherapy.com\/ligament-injury-and-healing-an-overview-of-current-clinical-concepts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ligaments and tendons may take months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Your age. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8222358\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The healing process slows down with age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so the older you are, the longer you\u2019ll likely need to recover.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Your insurance coverage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unfortunately, many insurance companies have a set number of PT sessions they\u2019ll cover, regardless of a patient\u2019s progress. At this point, patients have to choose whether to stop or pay out of pocket. You may be able to extend your PT coverage by getting a note from your doctor that the therapy is still medically necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I had to estimate, patients may see a physical therapist for four to six weeks on average for a simple to moderately complex issue,\u201d Halpin says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, once a patient meets the goals created in the initial evaluation, it\u2019s time to go. If a patient isn\u2019t progressing toward their goals, they\u2019ll work with their physical therapist to reevaluate their goals and establish new ones. \u201cCompleting physical therapy doesn\u2019t always mean the patient is completely healed,\u201d says Frayna. \u201c\u2018Recovery can look different for different patients and their individual needs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless, patients typically leave physical therapy with a deeper understanding of their own body mechanics and how to move in ways that prevent injury. PT looks different for everyone, but, as Halpin says, \u201cit\u2019s always our goal to keep patients doing what they love as much as possible, while encouraging the changes needed so they can feel better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
