Just look at this month\u2019s headlines: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/18\/climate\/europe-heat-wave-science.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Record-breaking heat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has brought Europe to a standstill, especially in the UK, where air conditioning isn\u2019t usually needed. In Spain and Portugal, which are more accustomed to high heat, the death toll from heat-related causes is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/heatwaves-deaths-spain-portugal-approach-152236795.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approaching 2,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a similar year in the US, extreme heat is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/safety\/heat\/news\/2021-06-03-heat-america-fatalities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top weather-related killer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be subtle at first but can quickly escalate, says Dr. Sarah Nosal, a family medicine doctor in The Bronx, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cParts of our country are getting so hot right now that it\u2019s really getting unsafe,\u201d she says. \u201cThe people who pass away from heat stroke are usually the ones who\u2019ve stayed in their homes without air conditioning.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As temperatures climb this summer, here are 10 tips for what you should and shouldn\u2019t do during a heatwave.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>1) Understand if you\u2019re at higher risk of heat stroke.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The central nervous system <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/heat-stroke\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353581\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weakens with age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which puts adults over 65 at more risk, since they\u2019re less able to handle extreme changes in body temperature.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other conditions that merit precautions include heart or lung disease and obesity. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/drug-safety\/can-your-meds-make-you-more-sensitive-to-sun-and-heat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also make you more dehydrated or even increase your risk of heatstroke or heat exhaustion. These can include anything from over-the-counter pain relief to antidepressants and high blood pressure medicine. Check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if you should take extra care in the heat and sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2) Plan for where you\u2019ll wait it out.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay attention to heat advisories in your area.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many cities have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstontx.gov\/health\/NewsReleases\/coh_heat_emergency_centers_open.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public cooling centers for residents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; libraries or malls are also good spots to find air conditioned, ventilated spaces. In New York, fire departments can give out caps that turn fire hydrants into sprinklers. If you have AC, set it to or below 78 degrees during the hottest hours to keep your home cool. \u201cDon\u2019t stay in your house if you don\u2019t have AC,\u201d Nosal says. \u201cThat\u2019s how people die.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3) Check on friends and family.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have elderly or disabled friends and family, plan to be with them during a heat wave, or check on them at least twice a day; they\u2019re among the most at-risk populations during a heat wave, particularly if they\u2019re isolated. Also, make sure they\u2019re wearing clothing appropriate for the heat. \u201cAn<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older person might be wearing more layers and not realize they\u2019re sweating and losing hydration,\u201d Nosal says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4) Be mindful of your fluid intake.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona-based family medicine specialist Dr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gail<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guererro-Tucker tells her patients to drink at least two to three liters of water (around eight to 12 cups) during a heat wave, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> walking out the door. Drink two to four cups every hour you\u2019re outside, and more if you\u2019re exercising. Water is best, versus sugary energy drinks. If you don\u2019t like the taste of water, flavor it with some juice or fruit slices. To gauge your hydration, look at your urine. If it looks like apple juice or is darker than that, you\u2019re likely dehydrated. Your urine should be odorless and pale.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>5) Avoid drinks that can dehydrate you.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol and caffeine can both make heat-related illness worse because they\u2019re dehydrating. \u201cAnd then you\u2019re less likely to perceive you\u2019re having a problem and it can get worse,\u201d Guererro-Tucker says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>6) Work out early in the day.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there\u2019s going to be a heat wave and you\u2019re not hitting an indoor gym, exercise outside in the early morning, before 10 a.m., or in the evening. Hydrate often before, during and after your workout. \u201cDon\u2019t wait until you\u2019re thirsty,\u201d\u00a0 says<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guererro-Tucker. \u201cIf you wait until you\u2019re thirsty, you\u2019ve waited too long.\u201d Don\u2019t think that because you\u2019re young and healthy, you\u2019re less vulnerable to the heat, says Nosal. Young <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/20072018\/high-school-football-practice-heat-stroke-exhaustion-deaths-state-rankings-health-safety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">football players<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have made tragic headlines, for instance, after becoming grievously ill or even dying after exposure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>7) Stock your car with the right supplies. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In extreme temperatures, cars, just like people, can have a harder time working. Make sure you have the necessary supplies handy in case your car breaks down in an isolated area. Keep water, window shades, an umbrella, a high-SPF sunscreen and some cooling towels you can wet in your car during summer months.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>8) Stay alert for signs of heat stroke.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/what-to-do-about-these-common-summer-ailments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat exhaustion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happens when your body gets too hot. If left unchecked, the exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which occurs when your internal temperature hits at least 104 degrees Fahrenheit.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat stroke can typically be treated if caught quickly, but delaying treatment can be fatal. Symptoms of heat exhaustion can include<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heavier-than-usual sweating, muscle cramps and feeling lightheaded or fatigued. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/what-to-do-about-these-common-summer-ailments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat stroke symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can include red skin, trouble breathing and seizures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>9) Be prepared to help someone in heat distress.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone with milder heat-related sickness should get into the shade or AC to cool off. If you\u2019re helping someone recover, don\u2019t immediately give them food or a sugary drink. Instead, use ice packs, cool, wet towels or a tepid shower to reduce body temperature. For more dangerous symptoms, call 911 or head to the emergency room. Someone who has severe heat stroke, with a rectal body temperature over 105, will need rapid cooling in a hospital and IV fluids to bring their temperature down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>10) Know that if you don\u2019t have AC, your doctor can help.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In New York,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for example, Nosal often requests <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acf.hhs.gov\/ocs\/low-income-home-energy-assistance-program-liheap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">federal aid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for her patients with eligible medical conditions who can\u2019t pay their electricity bill or afford to buy an air conditioner. Health conditions might include heart disease or an illness that requires a medical device that needs to be plugged in. \u201cI\u2019ve never had an eligible patient turned down after I write a letter for them,\u201d Nosal says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
