Barbecue chicken. Salted caramel ice cream. What would summer be without these foods \u2014 and what would these foods be without the salt?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mineral, also known as sodium chloride, is a staple of human life. In fact, almost every person around the world has some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/centers\/national-minerals-information-center\/salt-statistics-and-information\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sort of indirect or direct contact<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with salt on a daily basis. Yet, in the past few decades, manufacturers have packed extra salt into processed foods. Today, around <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/v\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90 percent of Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are eating more sodium than recommended.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At what point does salt become a dealbreaker for your health? We checked in with the experts. Here\u2019s what they had to say.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Salty truths<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need some salt to survive. It&#8217;s estimated you need at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/salt-and-sodium\/#\">500 mg daily<\/a> for your body&#8217;s functions. You just enter murky territory when you get too much of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEveryone needs some salt to function,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farrinstitute.org\/author\/daniel-boyer-m-d\/\">Dr. Daniel Boyer<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSalt is good for human health and should not be avoided. Sodium chloride is an electrolyte that helps transmit nerve impulses, maintain the proper fluid balance in the body and contract and relax muscle fibers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But if you&#8217;re getting too much in your diet, you can develop all sorts of health problems.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/salt-and-sodium\/#\">Peoples&#8217; kidneys<\/a> often don&#8217;t have the bandwidth to keep up with excess sodium, so your body will hold onto extra water if you&#8217;re consuming too much salt \u2014 which increases your blood volume. Increased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/salt-and-sodium\/#\">blood volume<\/a> puts more pressure on your heart. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, this can lead to all sorts of health problems, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/we-all-know-inflammation-is-bad-but-what-exactly-is-it\/\">chronic inflammation<\/a>, heart failure, kidney problems and stroke. Cold cuts and cured meats, and processed foods like packaged salty snacks, breads, canned soups and bottled sauces and salad dressings, can quickly add too much salt into the average person\u2019s diet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Getting crystal clear<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/high-blood-pressure\/changes-you-can-make-to-manage-high-blood-pressure\/shaking-the-salt-habit-to-lower-high-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends that most adults get no more than 2,300 milligrams of salt (around a teaspoon) per day. Yet the ideal limit is actually 1,500 mg per day (around 2\/3 of a teaspoon of table salt), especially for those with high blood pressure. <\/span>Experts we spoke with agreed with these recommendations.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, there\u2019s no definitive way to measure how much salt you\u2019re getting, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theheartdietitian.com\/category\/heart-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veronica Rouse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietician. For at least somewhat of an estimate, Rouse has her own clients submit food diaries: lists of everything they\u2019ve consumed in a specific time period. From there, \u201cwe can calculate someone\u2019s nutrient intake,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/tests\/sodium-blood-test#:~:text=The%20sodium%20blood%20test%20measures,the%20back%20of%20the%20hand.\">blood test<\/a> to measure the sodium levels in your body, but the test doesn&#8217;t reveal as much information as experts would like.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[You can only] measure the amount of sodium relative to the volume of water in the blood,\u201d Crouse says. \u201cOur bodies are really good at controlling this by making us thirsty when we have a lot of salt. If our sodium level is high, we drink more and urinate more to remove excess sodium to keep it in balance.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good way to know if you\u2019ve been consuming too much salt is to simply see if cutting back has a positive effect on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/healthcare-trends\/why-does-the-definition-of-normal-blood-pressure-keep-changing\/\">your blood pressure<\/a>, says Boyer.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Saline solutions<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Replacing processed foods with fresh foods\u2014fruits, vegetables, whole grains, homemade dressings, and sauces\u2014is the best way to slash your salt intake. Using other seasonings, like pepper, oregano, lemon, and garlic can also make a dent. When eating out, Boyer recommends asking the server for information about how much salt is used in the preparation of the food you want to order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crouse points out that to lower salt intake, you can also increase your consumption of potassium and calcium \u2014 minerals that most Americans are deficient in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/salt\/potassium.htm#\">Potassium\u2019s role<\/a> is the opposite of sodium,\u201d she says. \u201cIt&#8217;s well-known that we need to reduce our sodium intake, but not as well-known that adding potassium can [also] help manage blood pressure. Potassium lowers blood pressure by reducing the rigidity or tension of the blood vessels and arteries and eases the blood flow.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s best to get potassium in foods rather than supplements, says Crouse. Bananas, melon, broccoli and leafy greens are a few examples of high-potassium foods. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re replacing processed foods with fresh foods high in the right minerals, Crouse says adding a touch of salt to enhance the flavor is fine. \u201cIf adding [a little] salt to your vegetables helps you eat more vegetables, I encourage it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
