{"id":19811,"date":"2022-08-08T10:13:06","date_gmt":"2022-08-08T15:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=19811"},"modified":"2023-03-06T15:42:40","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T20:42:40","slug":"5-misconceptions-about-monkeypox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/5-misconceptions-about-monkeypox\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Misconceptions About Monkeypox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monkeypox \u2014 the virus that causes a fever and body aches, often accompanied by painful blisters or sores \u2014 is officially a public health emergency in the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike Covid-19, monkeypox isn\u2019t a mysterious new illness. While it\u2019s been known for thousands of years in other mammals, such as rodents and simians, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-history-of-monkeypox-180980301\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first identified modern human case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appeared in a baby in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970. The earliest samples of the virus were collected in Denmark from a colony of macaques imported from Singapore in 1958.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s part of the same family of viruses that causes smallpox, it\u2019s not nearly as deadly. Until this outbreak, monkeypox was largely confined to West and Central Africa, due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/virological.org\/t\/urgent-need-for-a-non-discriminatory-and-non-stigmatizing-nomenclature-for-monkeypox-virus\/853\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unequal access to vaccines and treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers believe the virus has drastically improved its adaptations for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2022.06.28.497936v1.full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human-to-human transmission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, causing it to spread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-022-01907-y\">more rapidly<\/a> than in the past. Presently, the US has just over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/response\/2022\/us-map.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7,400 confirmed cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misinformation has traveled with monkeypox; we\u2019ve all been flooded with confusing messages about who\u2019s at risk, the nature of the virus and how to stay safe.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, we clear up five major misconceptions.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Misconception: Only men who are intimate with other men can get monkeypox.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this virus is transmitted via \u201cvery direct skin contact,\u201d as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.uga.edu\/faculty-member\/jose-f-cordero\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jos\u00e9 F. Cordero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Georgia College of Public Health, puts it, monkeypox is not actually a sexually transmitted infection. At present, you are at much higher risk of contracting monkeypox if you\u2019re a man <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/why-the-monkeypox-outbreak-is-mostly-affecting-men-who-have-sex-with-men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who has sex with men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2207323\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">98 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of cases so far in the global outbreak so far are in bisexual or gay men. However, it\u2019s crucial to note that anyone can contract the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health experts worry that linking monkeypox to queer communities <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/health\/2022\/07\/05\/monkeypox-stigma-spread-bisexual-gay-men-virus-misinformation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will increase bias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> toward marginalized populations and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/26\/1113713684\/monkeypox-stigma-gay-community\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hamper mitigation efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the same time, they want to ensure those at risk have the information they need to stay safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cases have been found in family members or roommates of people with monkeypox, because the virus <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/transmission.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can spread<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> via contact with fabrics (e.g., clothing, bedding or towels) and other objects contaminated by virus fluids or sores. Transmission <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/transmission.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can occur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after a person begins developing symptoms and until their rash has fully healed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animals can also spread monkeypox: In 2003, a shipment of animals from Ghana infected a group of pet prairie dogs in the US, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22371-monkeypox\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed the virus to humans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Misconception: The monkeypox outbreak means smallpox is back.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smallpox, which devastated human communities for thousands of years, was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/smallpox#tab=tab_1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eradicated completely in 1980<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thanks to an intensive, decades-spanning global health effort. This is still considered one of the most significant public health accomplishments of all time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monkeypox is part of the same genus as smallpox, but it\u2019s significantly different from and less dangerous than smallpox, says Cordero. \u201cThe percentage of people that have actually died from monkeypox or had very serious illness is small,\u201d he says. Those <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2022\/07\/1123212\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most at risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from severe illness or death from monkeypox include newborn babies, small children and people with compromised immune systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monkeypox cannot turn into smallpox, because they are different viruses. While smallpox had a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/vaccines-blood-biologics\/vaccines\/smallpox\">fatality rate<\/a> of around 30 percent, in recent years, the World Health Organization has reported a monkeypox fatality rate of around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/monkeypox\">3 to 6 percent<\/a>. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts say this outbreak is shaping up to have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/wr\/mm7123e1.htm\">much lower fatality rate<\/a>. As of Aug. 8th, there have been no reported deaths in the US from the virus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One benefit of the viruses\u2019 similarities is that existing smallpox vaccines also work against monkeypox; the two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/clinicians\/smallpox-vaccine.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration\u2013approved smallpox vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are currently being used to inoculate people against monkeypox.<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Misconception: You can get monkeypox just by shopping at the grocery store.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts say the virus is not spreading widely in the community via high-touch surfaces like grocery carts or subway poles. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/notices\/alert\/monkeypox\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has declared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that monkeypox is currently a low risk to the general public. As for going abroad, the CDC has issued a Level 2 travel alert, notifying tourists and others to use enhanced precautions like hand-washing without discouraging travel anywhere in the world because of the virus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather, close contact with infected people presents the greatest risk. Monkeypox virus has been found alive on bedding and clothing for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/specific-settings\/home-disinfection.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to 15 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so anyone infected with monkeypox should isolate and disinfect their clothes, bedding and towels regularly. Anyone living in the same household with someone who has been infected should keep their linens separate, and all shared appliances and spaces should be regularly wiped down and disinfected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, of course, everyone should wash their hands \u2014 one simple, effective tool we all have for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2446461\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reducing the spread of infectious disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Misconception: Everyone will need a monkeypox vaccine.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two vaccines available, both originally used against smallpox but approved for vaccination against monkeypox. JYNNEOS, also known as Imvamune or Imvanex, is the more popular, because it\u2019s approved for people with weakened immune systems, while ACAM2000 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/considerations-for-monkeypox-vaccination.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, JYNNEOS has been in short supply. The federal Department of Health and Human Services is working on getting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2022\/07\/28\/hhs-expands-availability-of-monkeypox-vaccine-to-more-than-1-million-doses.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least 786,000 more doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the public, for a total exceeding 1.1 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of limited supply in the US, the CDC is limiting monkeypox vaccines to people with confirmed, presumed or likely exposure to the virus. Currently, people who have been in contact with someone with monkeypox, people with a recent sexual partner who has monkeypox and people who have had multiple sexual partners in areas with confirmed monkeypox are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/faq.html#Vaccination\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eligible for the vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccine rollouts vary by state, so anyone seeking a monkeypox vaccine should consult their state or county health department for more information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even once shots become widely accessible, the World Health Organization <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/news-perspective\/2022\/06\/who-discourages-mass-vaccination-monkeypox-outbreak\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says it still won\u2019t be necessary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to vaccinate everyone against monkeypox. Cordero says public health organizations will likely just encourage people who are at high risk of\u00a0 infection to get vaccinated.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That could change if the virus\u00a0 becomes more widespread, but for now, the priority is ensuring vaccines reach at-risk populations in all countries. As with the Covid-19 pandemic, low-income countries <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-02036-9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk losing out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as wealthier nations snap up supplies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Misconception: This means we\u2019ll live in a pandemic emergency forever.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a new virus spreading while we\u2019re still navigating life with Covid-19, many people may be wondering: Is this the new normal?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is true that climate change and other environmental disruptions caused by humans contribute to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-022-04788-w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rising spread of diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from wild animals to humans, also known as zoonotic diseases. \u201cMany of the emerging diseases are really happening because of the intrusion of humans into areas like jungles \u2014 places we generally don\u2019t go to,\u201d Cordero says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But he says we shouldn\u2019t panic that we\u2019ll live under pandemic emergencies forever. \u201cEmerging infections are something that have been happening for the last 20, 30, 40 years,\u201d he notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WHO\u2019s declaration of a global health emergency for monkeypox was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33284964\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seventh such declaration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 2007. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/omicron-what-to-know\/\">COVID-19<\/a> irrevocably changed the public\u2019s relationship with infectious disease, but before that, we had global outbreaks of the Zika virus, Ebola and others, which also required a cooperative global strategy to contain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe fact that we\u2019re having this focus on monkeypox reflects the increased interest in emerging infections,\u201d Cordero says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current outbreak of the monkeypox virus is serious, given how widely it has spread, and it\u2019s critical that the public understand the risks and precautions. But as always, clear and truthful information is the best vaccine against misinformation and panic, and will be key to getting the monkeypox virus under control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
