{"id":19815,"date":"2022-08-08T15:56:38","date_gmt":"2022-08-08T20:56:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=19815"},"modified":"2023-03-06T15:42:20","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T20:42:20","slug":"doctors-debate-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/doctors-debate-exercise\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctors Debate Exercise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every type of workout has its evangelists, from dedicated marathoners to devoted yogis. But when you peel back the hype, which forms of exercise are actually best for you? Can too much running be a bad thing? If you only practice Pilates, are you getting enough cardio? Is HIIT all it\u2019s cracked up to be?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physicalactivity\/basics\/age-chart.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adults get<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at least 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (think brisk walking) and two days a week of strength training. Getting active can also provide a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2019-09\/Physical_Activity_Guidelines_2nd_edition.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slew of benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from warding off disease to improving brain health. So which exercises offer the most bang for their buck?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We asked doctors to weigh in on the benefits and limitations of six common forms of exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Running<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running is popular for a reason: You can do it just about anywhere, and all you need is a good pair of shoes. Running is also an excellent workout, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.txortho.com\/provider\/scott-a-smith\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Scott A. Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist in Texas who has served as a team physician for professional basketball and high school football teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCardio, muscle mass, bone density, balance, coordination \u2014 all of those are benefited by running,\u201d Smith says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/06\/moderation-as-the-sweet-spot-for-exercise\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">read headlines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/guides\/health\/fitness\/is-running-bad-for-you\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the dangers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of too much running; think overuse injuries and even cardiac arrest. But Smith says with the right precautions, marathon runners aren\u2019t likely to encounter issues solely from regularly hitting the pavement. Studies show marathon runners <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29342063\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aren\u2019t at increased risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of hip or knee arthritis, and instances of cardiac arrest in marathon runners <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3445091\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are rare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To mitigate any of these risks, it\u2019s important to mix up your running routine with strength and stretching. A lack of cross-training is what can typically lead to most injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe way runners get into trouble is they run and that\u2019s all they do,\u201d Smith says. \u201cThey get stress fractures or they have a sore back or knee pain because they do nothing but run. If you\u2019re breaking it up [with a mix of exercises], you don\u2019t have the repetitive stress.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running is a high-impact activity, which puts more stress on the body compared to\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/7050-aerobic-exercise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower-impact exercises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like swimming. Walking, which has seen a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purewow.com\/wellness\/gen-z-walking-workout-trend\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent surge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in popularity among Gen Z, is a great substitute for running, for the right people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople look at running as fairly benign,\u201d\u00a0 says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyosteopathy.net\/about-me\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Samuel Werner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a family medicine physician in New Jersey. \u201cBut for somebody with moderate to severe osteoarthritis, I probably wouldn\u2019t be recommending running as much as I\u2019d be recommending swimming.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Yoga<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYoga\u201d can mean many different things. You can get a different workout depending on the class, whether it\u2019s a gentle hatha practice at home or a sweaty, pulse-pounding power yoga sequence in a studio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, a regular yoga routine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3447533\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can lead to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> improvements in flexibility, strength and overall physical health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic exercise,\u201d Smith says. \u201cPretty much everybody should be doing some form of yoga, and you can make it as intense as you want.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoga emphasizes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/balance\/what-is-pranayama\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pranayama<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a breathing technique that can help ease stress and anxiety. Studies have found that pranayama breathing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7336946\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offers physical benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, among other illnesses. Yoga\u2019s emphasis on balance, strength and flexibility can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21590293\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help alleviate back pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverybody has back problems in their life,\u201d Smith says. \u201cSo if you can do some yoga and maintain that flexibility in your back and your hips, that\u2019s great.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While yoga can help strengthen your muscles, it might not always elevate your heart rate, so you\u2019ll also want to incorporate cardio in your routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>HIIT<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-intensity interval training has become popular among the fitness community in the last decade, mainly for its efficiency. You can typically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.usnews.com\/wellness\/fitness\/articles\/hiit-vs-cardio-for-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burn just as many calories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a 20-minute HIIT class as you would doing steady cardio for 45 minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIIT classes generally employ periods of intense, anaerobic exercise, where you max out your heart rate, punctuated by short periods of rest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of interval training can be applied to just about any exercise. If you\u2019re swimming, you can swim a hard lap, then rest for 30 seconds; while cycling, you might spin hard for two minutes and rest for one minute. HIIT can also be performed with simple bodyweight exercises that don\u2019t require any equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But are HIIT classes all they\u2019re cracked up to be? Many are marketed with claims about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shape.com\/fitness\/tips\/science-behind-afterburn-effect\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c24-hour afterburn effect,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a phenomenon in which your body continues burning calories after the workout ends. This can be misleading; while you may burn a few extra calories post-HIIT, it\u2019s fewer than you\u2019d really expect. Experts say it\u2019s highly unlikely this can stretch into 24 hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIIT also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/exercise-and-fitness\/high-intensity-exercise-and-your-heart\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might be too intense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for older adults or people with heart disease. Additionally, overtraining for anyone <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/sms.13999\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can lead to an increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the stress hormone cortisol, so it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/fitness\/the-cortisol-creep#The-importance-of-recovery\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important to recover<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with plenty of rest and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low-impact cross-training<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe biggest caution that I would give to somebody doing HIIT when they\u2019re starting out is they need to know their limitations,\u201d Werner says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Pilates<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joseph Hubertus Pilates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilatesfoundation.com\/pilates\/the-history-of-pilates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">created a rehab technique<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the early 20th century using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/39029\/pilates_world_war_i_therapy_becomes_popular_pastime\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elements of yoga, boxing and gymnastics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help English soldiers wounded during World War I. For this reason, Pilates is often recommended as a low-impact core-strengthening program for athletes recovering from injuries. Studies have also found it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29332746\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effective in managing pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people with conditions ranging from scoliosis to hypertension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like yoga, Pilates emphasizes core strength and breathing. Unlike yoga, the movements tend to be more dynamic and less static; instead of holding a pose for a long period of time, you might incorporate leg and arm movements to create an added challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYoga and Pilates both rely on the same core training, flexibility and ability to hold a position, which is essential to maintain good spine health,\u201d Smith says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key benefit of Pilates is how it strengthens the muscles of the core \u2014 something all of us need, Werner says, because that can ultimately prevent injury and back pain. That said, it can\u2019t provide a well-rounded exercise program on its own: \u201cIf you\u2019re doing nothing but yoga and nothing but Pilates, you\u2019re probably not getting your cardiovascular workout,\u201d Smith says.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Strength training<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strength training is crucial for fortifying our muscles and bones. It can also help with balance, which is important as we age and our risk of falling increases. Crucially, strength training isn\u2019t just for bodybuilders, and there are plenty of ways to build strength even if you don\u2019t aspire to the cover of a fitness magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverybody should do some strength training, but gravity works,\u201d Smith says. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be in the gym grunting and screaming.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bodyweight strength training exercises include squats, lunges, wall sits, planks and other moves that use your own body weight for load. As those exercises become easier, you can start incorporating free weights or weight machines. As with any other type of exercise, you\u2019ll want to integrate strength training with some cardio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust doing reps of a particular strength training exercise is going to be fine for muscle bulk, but it\u2019s not going to be what\u2019s protective against disease in the long run.\u201d Werner says.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Biking<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you prefer pedaling on the open road or spinning in your living room, biking can be customized to anyone\u2019s needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very low-intensity, great aerobic exercise, and you can also make it an anaerobic exercise \u2014 it checks off a bunch of boxes,\u201d Smith says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared to running, biking is fairly low impact, which means that people with lower-body injuries can rely it for their cardio needs. The main concern with cycling outdoors is safety, if you\u2019re headed outdoors into traffic. Investing in a regular or a stationary bike can be as budget-friendly or extravagant as you want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And of course, you\u2019ll want to balance your cycling routine with plenty of stretching and strength moves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the best exercise is the one you\u2019ll actually do<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t stress too much about creating the perfect workout routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re picking an exercise, you\u2019ve got to pick something that is not like poking a stick in your eye,\u201d Smith says. \u201cBecause if it is, three months from now, you won\u2019t be doing it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
