{"id":19819,"date":"2022-08-09T13:13:08","date_gmt":"2022-08-09T18:13:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepapergown.zocdoc.com\/?p=19819"},"modified":"2026-02-05T07:41:31","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T12:41:31","slug":"what-is-paxlovid-and-when-should-you-take-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/what-is-paxlovid-and-when-should-you-take-it\/","title":{"rendered":"What Is Paxlovid and When Should You Take It?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Food and Drug Administration <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-first-oral-antiviral-treatment-covid-19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">authorized Paxlovid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the first antiviral treatment for Covid-19, in December 2021, it\u2019s been making headlines more recently thanks to one prominent patient: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/22\/1112878826\/biden-is-being-treated-with-the-covid-drug-paxlovid-to-speed-his-recovery\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Joe Biden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxlovid\u2019s antiviral properties can reduce symptom severity and shorten the course of a case of Covid-19 (also shortening your quarantine time. <\/span>It can also decrease <a href=\"https:\/\/erictopol.substack.com\/p\/paxlovid-and-long-covid\">the risk<\/a> of long Covid by 26% and around 5-10% of patients can get a rebound effect with it, particularly if they are elderly or immune-compromised.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe huge benefit in studies is that it protects people from hospitalization and death,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asp.nm.org\/justin-moore.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W. Justin Moore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a clinical pharmacist specializing in infectious diseases at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While initial studies showed it offered the most benefit for unvaccinated people, those who are vaccinated against Covid-19 can also take Paxlovid, as long as they meet certain criteria. Here\u2019s what you need to know about taking Paxlovid for Covid-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Should you take Paxlovid?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxlovid is recommended for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/omicron-what-to-know\/\">mild and moderate cases<\/a> of Covid-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe benefit is to prevent people from progressing to severe disease, to keep them out of the hospital,\u201d says Moore. If you end up in the hospital with Covid-19, you\u2019re past the point of needing Paxlovid \u2014 you\u2019d likely be given a different form of treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Who is eligible?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone above 12 years old, at least 88 pounds and at risk for serious complications of Covid-19 can get a Paxlovid prescription, as long as they have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/covid-19-antigen-rapid-test\/\">positive rapid or PCR test.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The definition of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/paxlovid-whos-eligible-and-how-to-get-pfizers-covid-19-antiviral-drug#How-to-get-it\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201chigh risk\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes people 65 or older and anyone with a compromised immune system. Patients with conditions like asthma and diabetes or a BMI of 25 or higher also qualify for Paxlovid treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Are there any bad drug interactions?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxlovid is safe to take with other medications. However, it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov\/therapies\/antiviral-therapy\/ritonavir-boosted-nirmatrelvir--paxlovid-\/paxlovid-drug-drug-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can interact<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with certain drugs, such as common blood thinners and a supplement called St. John\u2019s wort, so always tell your provider about other medications you take.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Who can prescribe it?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxlovid always requires a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. If you have Covid-19 and you want to take it, it\u2019s best to head to urgent care or talk to your primary care provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Tamiflu, the antiviral drug that treats influenza, Paxlovid works best when you take it as soon as possible after symptom onset. Moore recommends starting it within five days of symptoms and a positive Covid-19 test.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>How do you take Paxlovid?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients take three tablets twice a day for five days. Like any other medication, it can cause side effects.
