More and more people are becoming \u201csober-curious,\u201d a new trend that entails cutting out alcohol for health reasons. In fact, a 2021 Nielsen study found that 22 percent of consumers were cutting back on alcohol for their well-being.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While moderate alcohol drinking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/healthy-drinks\/drinks-to-consume-in-moderation\/alcohol-full-story\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have some benefits, research shows that alcohol consumption can be hard on your body. Heavy drinking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/alcohol\/art-20044551\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been linked to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ailments like liver disease, heart disease and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/healthy-drinks\/drinks-to-consume-in-moderation\/alcohol-full-story\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certain types of cancer.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And while the \u201csober-curious\u201d trend is encouraging, the reality is that alcohol is embedded in the fabric of many of our daily lives. While getting sober offers a host of wellness benefits, it\u2019s often not a \u201ctrendy\u201d experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2017\/08\/11\/study-one-in-eight-american-adults-are-alcoholics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 8 Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suffer from alcohol use disorder, defined as a preoccupation with and inability to control one\u2019s drinking. The disorder rose by nearly 50 percent in the first decade of the 2000s, and the pandemic only made Americans\u2019 drinking habits worse; researchers found that binge drinking rose by at least 21 percent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you\u2019re at your breaking point or are simply sick of the way alcohol makes you feel, we\u2019ve reached out to the experts for some advice on who can help you quit alcohol \u2014 and what happens to your body when you do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStopping alcohol use, especially if you drink often or heavily, can lead to improvements in many areas of physical and mental health,\u201d says Dr. Michael J. McGrath, an addiction medicine physician based in Hawaii. \u201cThe exact changes that someone experiences when they quit using alcohol vary depending on the person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Getting help<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some might be able to quit drinking cold turkey, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/procedure\/addiction-substance-abuse-177\">specialists<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/procedure\/addiction-substance-abuse-177\">support groups<\/a> out there that can help guide you through the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who thinks they might have a problem with alcohol should first reach out to their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary care provider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who can provide referrals and other resources. They might refer you to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/procedure\/addiction-substance-abuse-177\">addiction specialist<\/a>, a support group (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcoholics Anonymous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other 12-step alternatives) and\/or a rehabilitation center, depending on your symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/when-to-get-help-for-a-drinking-problem\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Licensed addiction psychiatrists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asam.org\/resources\/public-resources\/what-is-an-addiction-specialist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">licensed board-certified addiction medicine physicians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have a higher level of training specific to addiction. If needed, a doctor can prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/advice\/5-people-whove-taken-rx-drugs-to-curb-drinking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help minimize withdrawal symptoms and stifle alcohol cravings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWithdrawal management involves using sedative medications, which mimic alcohol\u2019s effects on the brain,\u201d says Dr. Andrew Giannotti, president of the Texas Society of Addiction Medicine. \u201cThey minimize the alcohol withdrawal symptoms, resulting in a safe and more comfortable transition off alcohol.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What happens to your body when you stop drinking<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The way you first feel after calling it quits can vary greatly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lighter drinkers may experience mild issues. You might have trouble falling asleep without a glass of wine before bed. You may feel more anxious if you used alcohol as a way to self-soothe. You may also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/sugar-cravings-after-quitting-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience sugar cravings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as your body misses blood sugar spikes it would get from booze.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavier drinkers should make sure to check in with a medical provider before quitting due to the potential of developing withdrawal symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatients should never stop abruptly without seeking medical care,\u201d says Giannotti. \u201cAlcohol withdrawal can sometimes be severe and lead to complications including seizures and death, so it should always be taken seriously.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal symptoms can set in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2004\/0315\/p1443.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anywhere from six hours to a few days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after stopping drinking, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2004\/0315\/p1443.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be minor or extremely serious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a general rule, the severity of a person&#8217;s alcohol withdrawal symptoms is proportional to how much and how long they were drinking before they stopped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical withdrawal symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tremors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea and\/or vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypertension<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep disturbances, like insomnia or nightmares<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combativeness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Benefits of quitting alcohol<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve faced the first hump of potential withdrawal symptoms, things typically get better. Withdrawal symptoms <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2004\/0315\/p1443.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peak two or three days after stopping drinking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and gradually dissipate over the course of one to two weeks. At this point, people can discontinue any medications they were on to suppress withdrawal symptoms, but may begin taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/advice\/5-people-whove-taken-rx-drugs-to-curb-drinking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drugs that are meant to promote abstinence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to seek treatment for the underlying causes of alcohol dependence; Recovery is a marathon, not a sprint. While relapses are common, a 2020 study shows that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/01\/15\/1071282194\/addiction-substance-recovery-treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 out of 4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people who experience some sort of addiction eventually recover.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some long term health benefits of quitting drinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Better sleep\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While drinking might make it easier to fall asleep initially, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/aa41.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research indicates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it significantly decreases your sleep quality overall. In one study, researchers found that after just two weeks of abstaining from alcohol, patients <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/1873180\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experienced substantial rebound in the function of their hippocampus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the brain region responsible for learning and memory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>A mood boost<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol can do a number on your mental health. While it can make people feel happy and carefree in the moment, it can damage overall mental health, as well as worsen any existing psychological diagnoses.
