{"id":19885,"date":"2022-09-16T08:57:21","date_gmt":"2022-09-16T13:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/?p=19885"},"modified":"2023-03-06T15:37:57","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T20:37:57","slug":"4-people-on-taking-adhd-meds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/4-people-on-taking-adhd-meds\/","title":{"rendered":"4 People on Taking ADHD Meds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, it\u2019s a lot more common for people to talk openly about attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/culture\/features\/a41083545\/adhd-in-adult-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnoses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have spiked in women and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/24\/style\/adhd-online-creators-diagnosis.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people of color<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, after decades of the stereotype that it only affects young white boys. As children are diagnosed, their parents realize <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/parenting\/2022\/08\/01\/adhd-parent-and-child\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they have it too<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Social media is leading the charge in breaking down the stigma of ADHD diagnosis. For better and for worse, advice, anecdotes, humor and resources are all over platforms like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/23310326\/tiktok-adhd-telehealth-done-adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikTok<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The predominant signs of ADHD are often characterized as a short attention span, forgetfulness and disorganization. Many who live with ADHD say this can lead to misrepresentations and missed diagnoses \u2014 that it\u2019s not a disorder of inattention, but of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chadd.org\/adhd-news\/adhd-news-caregivers\/the-attention-deficit-myth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regulating attention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Right now, diagnoses are close to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21846424\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twice as common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a decade ago, a sharp rise which concerns some and vindicates others. One large <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2778451#:~:text=Findings%20In%20this%20systematic%20scoping,may%20often%20outweigh%20the%20benefits.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found some evidence that ADHD has been overdiagnosed, although just five of the more than 300 relevant studies addressed possible harms directly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s always worth considering whether we\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/i-d.vice.com\/en\/article\/pkbywn\/tiktok-pathologise-normal-behaviour-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pathologizing normal behaviors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially given the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-goods\/2021\/9\/30\/22696338\/pathologizing-adhd-autism-anxiety-internet-tiktok-twitter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incentives of social media itself<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That doesn\u2019t mean treatment isn\u2019t helpful for those who need it. ADHD can get in the way of functioning well at school, work or home, or masking it can demand so many mental resources that even high-achieving individuals run out of fuel for seemingly simple tasks, like putting away laundry. Luckily, a combination of therapy and medication can help many regain control over their energy and attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most commonly, medical providers treat ADHD with stimulants, which can help boost brain chemicals that improve attention span and focus. Short-acting stimulants, such as Ritalin and Adderall, can provide immediate symptom relief. Especially popular are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2695738\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-acting stimulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like Vyvanse and Concerta, which release slowly throughout the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2518387\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2008 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests between 70 and 80 percent of patients on stimulants for ADHD see symptom improvement. We talked to five people who take medication for ADHD about how it affects their lives and how they got to where they are now.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Elan, 44, Massachusetts<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirteen years ago, Elan was seeing a psychiatrist for depression. \u201cI was sitting in the waiting room reading a pamphlet about ADHD, and I related to an entire column of executive functioning symptoms,\u201d he says. \u201cI asked the psychiatrist if I could have ADHD, and he said, \u2018Let\u2019s try some Adderall and see what happens.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before Adderall, Elan could barely sit down to study for his PhD-qualifying exams. He constantly left important items at home when he left for the day. That changed as soon as he started taking the medication. He got into a PhD program in New York but never got his Adderall prescription refilled. For several years, he remained on an antidepressant, until a year ago, when he revisited the matter with his psychopharmacologist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His provider prescribed him another stimulant, Ritalin. Elan hasn\u2019t noticed a huge difference yet, but he says he\u2019ll have a better idea when work ramps up again in the fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either way, Elan says he\u2019s accepted that he\u2019ll be taking an ADHD medication indefinitely \u2014 or at least until he retires and has fewer tasks to keep track of. \u201cWhen I don\u2019t have paid work to do and it\u2019s just my own housework, it\u2019s less of a challenge to manage everything,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Lauren, 27, Washington<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the pandemic hit, Lauren found herself struggling. \u201cI\u2019ve always enjoyed work, but I was really struggling to leave my bedroom and hang out with friends, things I used to be really good at,\u201d she says. Her doctor diagnosed her with depression and prescribed Zoloft, which improved her mood but not her attention span \u2014 even when her PCP recommended she double the dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, she pivoted her medication management to a psychiatric nurse practitioner, who suggested her depression might actually be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-and-depression-symptoms-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undiagnosed ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Lauren started taking Concerta in the morning and Ritalin as needed during the day. She has since been tapering off her Zoloft with her NP\u2019s support. Lauren says it feels like a cloud has lifted: She can better focus on work, organize her thoughts, communicate with friends and set boundaries without getting overwhelmed. \u201cI have a sorting and filtering mechanism that I never had before,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given how drastically the meds have improved her life, Lauren plans to stay on them indefinitely. She may, however, ask her nurse practitioner to tweak the dosage and the exact time she takes the medications to better schedule her bursts of focus; currently, she feels a big energy dropoff at the end of the day. (It\u2019s common for people taking stimulants to experience energy drop-offs, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-medication-rebound\/#:~:text=ADHD%20medication%20rebound%2C%20sometimes%20called,the%20end%20of%20a%20dose.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy rebound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, it\u2019s an improvement from not being able to leave her bedroom. Lauren finally feels like herself, at work and in her personal life. \u201cI don\u2019t have a desire to stop these medications,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Zoha, 25, Ontario, Canada<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, Zoha blamed her constant brain fog on the aftereffects of a Covid-19 infection. Her fuzzy mind affected every area of her life, especially her ability to communicate. \u201cIt felt like I had to physically push words out of my mouth, like I had to force myself to go through thick, disgusting mud,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fall 2020, she checked in with her primary care provider for a referral to a psychiatrist, which took nearly six months. (In Canada, it\u2019s common to wait that long for specialists.) One quick chat brought much-needed clarity: Zoha had basically every symptom of ADHD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First she took Wellbutrin, a medication typically used to treat depression. \u201cI noticed my executive dysfunction problems were not as bad, but after a month and a half, it wasn\u2019t working that well anymore,\u201d Zoha says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that point, the psychiatrist prescribed Vyvanse. The fog fully lifted after tapering off Wellbutrin and the Vyvanse took full effect. With the relief came a sense of grief: Zoha, who\u2019s of South Asian descent, says she\u2019s experienced racial bias in the past and wonders if racist stereotypes about Asians stalled her diagnosis. \u201cIf I had the help I needed, maybe I would have achieved more in my life,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, a year ago, Zoha had to stop taking Vyvanse due to issues with her health insurance. Until she\u2019s able to afford it again, she\u2019s been using a planner to manage her schedule and a small, ticking timer at her desk to stay focused on work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Ilan, 42, Maryland<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In high school, Ilan was always a great student. However, when he got to college, things changed. He began procrastinating more and had a hard time focusing on assignments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A psychiatrist diagnosed him with ADHD and prescribed Ritalin but didn\u2019t give instructions on how to use it. He reached out to another psychiatrist, who prescribed him one Ritalin pill a day. Ilan says the medication helped him be more productive than he ever had been before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After college, he paused medication for years, until his symptoms became unmanageable. \u201cI started my own company a few years ago, and I began to notice my productivity and anxiety issues showing up more,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A psychiatrist prescribed a low dose of Concerta, which began working almost immediately \u2014 and reminded Ilan why he started taking ADHD meds all those years ago. \u201cPart of me is wondering, why didn\u2019t I get back on these sooner?\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that he\u2019s found the right dose for himself, Ilan sees Concerta as an essential part of his routine. \u201cAs long as I don\u2019t have any side effects and the medication works, I\u2019ll stay on it as long as I can,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Ready to book an appointment with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/psychiatrists\">psychiatrist<\/a>?
