As people head back to the dentist, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2022\/02\/01\/dentist-office-teeth-patients-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the first time in years, we\u2019re taking a look at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how people are engaging with dentists and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> other oral specialists compared to a year ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The data shows that appointments are on the rise across the board, suggesting that people are becoming more comfortable getting back in the exam chair, addressing oral aches and pains caused by pandemic-induced stress, and even prioritizing their pearly whites as more Americans shed their masks and visible smiles emerge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19903 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dental-infographic-22-1229x2167.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"726\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dental-infographic-22.png 1440w, https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dental-infographic-22-381x672.png 381w, https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dental-infographic-22-191x336.png 191w, https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dental-infographic-22-95x168.png 95w, https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dental-infographic-22-681x1200.png 681w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Routine dental visits are back<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the onset of the pandemic, nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/2380084420962778\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half of U.S. adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> put off dental care, and professional dental services <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/2380084420962778\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell by over 75%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fortunately, Zocdoc data shows that people are catching up on those missed appointments, with some using the lapse in appointments or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mymove.com\/moving\/coronavirus-moving-trends\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a geographic move<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find a new provider. Between August 2021 and August 2022:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dentist appointments increased by 10%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New patient dental exam appointments increased by 18%\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Dental damage control is underway<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, putting off routine care during the pandemic has resulted in serious dental issues for some patients. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/21759-root-canal#:~:text=Root%20canal%20therapy%20is%20necessary%20when%20oral%20bacteria%20invade%20the,or%20damaged%20due%20to%20trauma.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Root canals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are necessary when cavities go untreated for too long, among other reasons, and these appointments are on the rise, along with other dental surgery appointments. Between August 2021 and August 2022:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Root canal appointments increased by 20%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wisdom tooth appointments increased by 17%\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Stress is impacting our minds <i>and<\/i> mouths<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s clear that levels of stress have<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/2021\/02\/adults-stress-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> intensified<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the last two years, but Zocdoc data indicates that this stress has taken a serious toll on not just our mental health, but also our mouths. With stress being a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/bruxism\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20356095\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading cause and risk factor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching), it\u2019s perhaps no surprise that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8239479\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google searches for bruxism significantly increased in 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/dentists-teeth-grinding-surging-covid-19-pandemic\/story?id=78692695\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dentists say<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they\u2019re seeing the effects of this stress as well. According to Zocdoc data, between August 2021 and August 2022:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cracked tooth repair appointments increased by 43%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TMJ pain appointments increased by 33%\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dental pain appointments increased by 32%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gum disease\/gingivitis, and bleeding gum appointments increased by 22%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>People are prioritizing their pearly whites<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mask mandates<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/p0811-covid-guidance.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continue to ease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many mouths are coming out from behind the mask for the first time in years. And now that our pearly whites are again front and center, Zocdoc data suggests a renewed interest in making sure they\u2019re looking their best.
