{"id":19908,"date":"2022-10-04T09:27:18","date_gmt":"2022-10-04T14:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/?p=19908"},"modified":"2023-03-27T10:05:07","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T15:05:07","slug":"is-your-smartphone-a-pain-in-the-neck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/healthcare-trends\/is-your-smartphone-a-pain-in-the-neck\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Your Smartphone a Pain in the Neck?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many ways, technology has changed our lives for the better, but it can also prove too much of a good thing.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7825859\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to o<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ne <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7825859\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent global survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 70 percent\u00a0 of internet users had increased smartphone usage due to Covid-19 lockdowns. The time we spend on phones jumped <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insiderintelligence.com\/insights\/mobile-users-smartphone-usage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17.7 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2020, and it\u2019s only increased since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we certainly enjoy the benefits of our devices, many people have no idea that their mobile device could be the culprit behind many of their body aches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Pain game<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using your smartphone too much can damage the whole package, from your bones and muscles into your joints. A few specific areas are particularly susceptible to stress from these activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>Texting, scrolling and talking<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRepetitive texting and swiping places a significant strain on your hands,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arlingtonortho.com\/physician\/john-gerard-westkaemper-m-d\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John G. Westkaemper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an orthopedic surgeon in Texas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain at the base of the thumb is one of the most common signs of phone overuse. \u201cThe thumb joint has a great potential for movement,\u201d Westkaemper says. \u201cHowever, a constant swiping motion can lead to inflammation and pain.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, he adds, \u201cHolding a phone in an awkward position for a prolonged period can irritate the wrist and forearm tendons and may contribute to painful tendonitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d You may be exacerbating strain here both during texting and talking on the phone. For instance, when you grasp your device for long periods, that flexing motion can affect the ulnar nerve \u2014 your funny bone \u2014 at the end of your elbow, which can cause numbness and tingling in the ring and\/or small fingers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Westkaemper recommends using Bluetooth headphones or placing your phone on a surface on speaker as much as possible, to avoid holding your phone in an awkward position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Power in posture<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York-based chiropractor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericksonhealingarts.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karen Erickson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says many folks exhibit poor posture when using their devices, which can lead to a whole host of issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One common pose: You might round your upper and lower back to look down at your phone without realizing it. This position places the head, neck and spine at an unnatural angle and could contribute to the reversal of the normal curve in the neck.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPoor posture puts stress on the vertebrae and the discs, which can cause pain and headaches,\u201d Erickson says. She stresses the importance of \u201cphone ergonomics,\u201d which she calls an ongoing commitment to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/safety\/good-posture\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proper posture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when using a smartphone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGood posture is not just a temporary measure, but something we need to be constantly mindful of,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s easy to forget, and you may have to reposition and correct your posture several times an hour until it becomes a habit, but if you make these changes part of your lifestyle, your pain may clear up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erickson also suggests:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of looking down, hold your phone up at eye level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequently stretch your arms, hands, neck and shoulders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use both hands to hold your phone or switch hands frequently.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use voice dictation, speaker or earbuds to free up your hands.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Calling for help<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing pain, stiffness or soreness at sites frequently compromised by smartphone use, there are some noninvasive options you could try at home:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rub <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/osteoarthritis\/in-depth\/pain-medications\/art-20045899\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">topical anti-inflammatory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medication on the bothered area.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apply heat in the morning to limber up stiff joints and ice in the evening to quell inflammation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask a medical professional about the right <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/guides\/doctors-debate-pain-medicine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter anti-inflammatory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medicine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massage the irritated area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limit phone usage.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If these remedies don\u2019t help after two to four weeks, seek medical attention from a primary care doctor, orthopedist or a chiropractor, depending on the location and severity of your pain or injury.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf your life is being significantly affected or the pain is unbearable, it\u2019s always a good idea to consult a doctor,\u201d Westkaemper says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your doctor will physically examine you and may take X-rays to determine the best course of treatment. Depending on your diagnosis, your doctor might recommend physical therapy or give you a steroid injection to help with your pain. Most of all, they\u2019ll probably encourage you to change up your phone hygiene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLimiting your device time is not only good for your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6314044\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it may prevent or lessen physical discomfort or injuries as well,\u201d Westkaemper says. He recommends installing a time tracker or screen time app to become aware of how many hours per day you use specific apps, as well as switching to a desktop computer to give the thumb a break.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCell phones are ubiquitous, and we are so used to them that sometimes people forget they actually have the option to utilize a computer,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">Ready to book a doctor\u2019s appointment?
