Aside from the pain, injuring your lower body is especially disruptive to daily living, as it prevents you from moving around as usual. Postponing exercise regimens, activities like hiking and dance, and sometimes even work is necessary to allow proper healing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour foot has 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northaustinfeet.com\/bio\/anne-sharkey.cfm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Anne Sharkey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a foot and ankle surgeon in Cedar Park, Texas. \u201cThe tibia, fibula and talus make up your ankle. The foot is divided into regions: forefoot, mid foot, rear foot. These structures work together to allow for walking and other weight-bearing activities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With so many bones, muscles and other structures, it\u2019s no surprise that foot and ankle problems are common. For mild injuries like sprains, you can visit your primary care physician first. They may refer you to a <a href=\"https:\/\/book.zocdoc.com\/get-started\/podiatrists?\">podiatrist<\/a>, who specializes in foot and ankle care, or an <a href=\"https:\/\/book.zocdoc.com\/get-started\/orthopedic-surgeons?\">orthopedic specialist<\/a> for treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are 10 of the most common foot and ankle injuries doctors see among their patients.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>1. Ankle sprain<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnkle sprains are one of the most common sports injuries and injuries of the foot,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepittsburghchiropractor.com\/us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Tauberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Pittsburgh-based sports chiropractor. \u201cOftentimes, people sprain their ankle because they come down on the outside of their foot, causing them to roll the ankle inward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating an ankle sprain depends on the severity of the injury. A sprain can range from a partial to a full tear of your ankle ligaments. \u201cTreatment can include rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medicines, compression, elevation, immobilization, bracing, physical therapy and occasionally surgery,\u201d Sharkey says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2. Plantar fasciitis<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sole of your foot is a common site for injury; plantar fasciitis causes inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick, fibrous band that runs from the heel bone to the ball of the foot. If you experience intense heel pain when you stand up, this could be why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stretching, orthotics and anti-inflammatory medications usually take care of milder cases. Severe instances may require more involved interventions, like injections or surgery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>3. Achilles tendonitis<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your Achilles tendon connects your heel to the muscles in your lower leg; it\u2019s also the largest tendon in your body. When you overuse this tendon, causing injury and swelling, that\u2019s Achilles tendonitis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The RICE protocol \u2014 rest, ice, compression and elevation \u2014 helps improve symptoms for Achilles tendonitis and many other foot and ankle injuries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>4. Ingrown toenails<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is when your toenail grows into the skin on your toe. Don\u2019t worry too much \u2014 it happens to lots of us. However, it is often painful and accompanied by redness and swelling. Wearing closed-toe shoes or otherwise applying pressure to the affected toe may make this pain worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trimming the toenail alleviates symptoms in many cases. However, more involved procedures or antibiotics may be necessary to facilitate healing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>5. Plantar warts<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The human papillomavirus is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/hpv\/stdfact-hpv.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common sexually transmitted infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States, and its manifestations aren\u2019t limited to your mouth or private areas. HPV warts, which are often tough and calloused, can also pop up on your feet. You can also get plantar warts from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/plantar-warts\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352691\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pools and locker rooms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you walk around barefoot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWarts are treated in a variety of ways, and treatments depend on size, location and provider preference,\u201d Sharkey says. You and your doctor can choose between freezing them off, surgery, laser therapy or other options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>6. Corns and calluses<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The skin on your feet can build up on the top or bottom. When it happens on the top of your foot, it\u2019s called a corn; on the bottom of your foot, built-up skin is a callus, just like the calluses from learning guitar or playing on a jungle gym. Usually they\u2019re harmless and painless, but some people prefer to have them removed for aesthetic reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter creams and patches can help soften corns and calluses. Your doctor can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/corns-and-calluses\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20355951\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carefully trim excess skin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to remove them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>7. Haglund\u2019s deformity<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Haglund\u2019s deformity is an enlargement of a portion of the calcaneus, or heel bone. It causes the back of your heel to rub against your shoes, leading to abrasions and irritated skin. You may have heard of heel spurs, but these are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/322432#vs-heel-spur\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not the same<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 heel spurs come from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/21965-heel-spurs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress on soft ligaments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, rather than the bone itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have Haglund\u2019s deformity, anti-inflammatory medication can help reduce pain and swelling. Avoid shoes that rub the back of your heel and ankle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>8. Bunions<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may associate bunions with older women, but they can happen at any age. Bunions are painful, bony growths on your joints; they can develop or worsen if you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/bunions\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354799\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wear tight or narrow shoes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They typically cause a toe to bend at an abnormal angle. If you have a bunion, chances are that it\u2019s in your big toe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBunions tend to run in families,\u201d Sharkey says. \u201cThey are a progressive deformity that worsens over time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suspect you have a bunion, get it checked out by a podiatrist. They might recommend wider shoes or cushions to reduce any rubbing against your shoe. Surgery is typically the best treatment to realign your toe joint.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h2>9. Hammer toe<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hammertoe-and-mallet-toe\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350839\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hammer toe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forces your toe to bend or curl into a contracted position. The way your foot is structured, the shoes you choose, foot injuries or several diseases can cause a hammer toe. \u201cThe contracted toes are painful when walking or wearing shoes that rub the tops of the toes,\u201d Sharkey says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wider shoes, orthotics or other treatments relieve the discomfort of hammer toes, but surgery is the only way to correct this condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>10. Neuroma<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A neuroma is a thickening of a nerve that can develop in different parts of the body. In your foot, the most common location is between the third and fourth toes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/mortons-neuroma\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351935\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injury or pressure on the nerve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sometimes due to highly arched or flat feet, is typically the cause. Trauma to your feet from sports or wearing high heels can also cause neuromas. In cases where a neuroma is visible, it looks like an out-of-place bump, often in the space between your toes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without treatment, neuromas can damage the nerves in your foot. Treatments for neuromas include injections, modified activities, modified shoes, orthotics and surgery. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foot and ankle injuries aren\u2019t any fun, especially since they can prevent you from moving around on your own. One good way to protect your feet and ankles is to strengthen your joints with\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a34513677\/wobble-board-exercises\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">balance board exercises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy favorite balance board exercise is holding an upright position while standing on one foot and lifting the other leg parallel to the floor,\u201d Tauburg says. \u201cHold this position for as long as you can.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/the-summer-i-broke-two-toes\/\">Injuries<\/a> can happen to any of us, despite our best efforts.
