Contrary to the old superstition, you\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/14164-tinnitus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experiencing a medical problem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and should likely seek out an ENT.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ear, nose and throat doctors provide consultation, diagnosis and treatment for a diverse range of conditions and disorders relating to the ears, nose, throat, head and neck region. These can manifest as problems from the simple to the severe, for all ages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe do everything from the neck up, except the eyes, brain and spinal cord,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.muhealth.org\/doctors\/mark-gilbert-md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Mark Gilbert<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a University of Missouri Health Care otolaryngologist.\u00a0 \u201cA lot of what we treat isn\u2019t life-threatening, but it really affects your day-to-day quality of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some ENTs pursue a specialized focus, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pediatric otolaryngology: treatment of ENT problems in children<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhinology: treatment of the sinuses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laryngology: treatment of the voice and swallowing disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otology\/neurotology: treatment of the ear and balance system<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head and neck<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oncology: treatment of head and neck cancers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facial plastics and reconstruction: cosmetic surgery and reconstruction of the head and neck<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>When should you see an ENT?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When new symptoms present, an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urgent care or primary care doctor often can be the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first line of treatment. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If symptoms don\u2019t resolve or become recurrent and initial treatment options and attempts are not working, then it\u2019s a good idea to seek out an ENT specialist,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/utswmed.org\/doctors\/mark-newcomer\/?_ga=2.187877742.774513189.1663592369-1185581824.1655660384\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Mark Newcomer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a clinical assistant professor of otolaryngology at the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Exceptions include sudden hearing loss, neck masses or persistent voice changes, which could indicate something more serious or time-sensitive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether a patient would need a referral before seeing an ENT specialist \u201cdepends on the parameters and regulations of their individual insurance plan,\u201d Newcomer says.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Your visit<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your ENT physician will start with a history and a physical examination, which will likely involve shining a bright light into the troubled area. Depending on the condition, your provider might use a microscope or an endoscope to further inspect the area. Finally, they will make a recommendation for treatment, which might include additional testing, medication, therapy, a referral or even surgery. \u201cSometimes the recommendation might be to just observe and see back in a month to follow up,\u201d says Gilbert.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Common reasons to see an ENT<\/h2>\n<p><b>Hearing loss: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While progressive hearing loss <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/blog\/how-to-protect-your-hearing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is normal as you age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, certain risk factors can accelerate that process, such as chronic noise exposure at work or acoustic trauma. \u201cWhen a patient is consistently having trouble hearing, it\u2019s reasonable to get their hearing tested,\u201d Gilbert says. An ENT works closely with an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/hearing-loss\/what-is-an-audiologist\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">audiologist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to test hearing and fit patients who need them for hearing aids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sleep apnea<\/b> <b>or snoring: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ENT specialists frequently treat sleep-disordered breathing, nasal airway obstruction, snoring and sleep apnea. \u201cWe try to determine the anatomic cause of the obstruction and then recommend appropriate treatment or intervention,\u201d says Newcomer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pediatrics: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birth defects of the head and neck, ear infections, tonsil and adenoid infections, airway problems, and asthma and allergies are some of the issues an ENT treats in children. Placing tubes in a child\u2019s ears to mitigate chronic infections is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/conditions-diseases\/ear-tubes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common pediatric surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> performed in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Throat issues: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swallowing complaints, as well as chronic sore throat, hoarseness, reflux, recurrent tonsil infections, throat tumors or masses, and airway and vocal cord disorders are frequently seen by an ENT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dizziness or vertigo:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482356\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple body systems, including your inner ear, work together to maintain balance.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vertigo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the sensation that you or the environment around you is in motion, even when you\u2019re sitting still. An ENT can determine if the vertigo is being caused by issues within the ear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Chronic sinus infections: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have wrestled with the telltale symptoms of a sinus infection: nasal congestion, green or yellow nasal discharge or drainage, and facial pain and\/or pressure over the sinuses. \u201cWhen you&#8217;re having multiple sinus infections a year, there might be something structural within the sinus cavities that is preventing the sinuses from healing correctly or draining properly,\u201d Newcomer says. \u201cThat\u2019s where an ENT typically gets involved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Ready to book an appointment with an <a href=\"https:\/\/book.zocdoc.com\/get-started\/ear-nose-throat-doctors?\">ENT<\/a>?
