Most people with gout experience multiple flare-ups throughout the years. If someone gets lots of flare-ups, it\u2019s known as chronic gout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have an infection if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pain becomes even more severe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have a high temperature, but you\u2019re shivering<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel sick<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t eat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact your primary care provider if you have any of these symptoms. Getting treatment quickly can minimize any damage caused by the infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Who is likely to get gout?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People are more likely to get gout if they:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are male and over the age of 30<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are overweight<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink excessive amounts of alcohol, particularly beer or spirits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat excessive amounts of red meat or seafood<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have one or more of the following health conditions:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High cholesterol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osteoarthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problems with their kidneys<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have been through menopause<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have family members who have gout (particularly close relatives)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have had surgery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have had a recent injury<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take diuretics or medication for high blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data shows that gout affects around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2787544\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9.2 million people in the United States<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is 3.9% of the adult population.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>What causes gout?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gout is caused by the build-up of uric acid, which is a byproduct of purines in the blood. Your body gets rid of uric acid when you go to the bathroom. Both these substances are normal, but uric acid can build up in your blood if your body makes too much of it, or if your kidneys don\u2019t function well. Uric acid forms tiny crystals in and around your joints if too much of it builds up. This is what causes the pain and swelling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19955 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/gout-img-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"611\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/gout-img-2.png 611w, https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/gout-img-2-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/gout-img-2-537x336.png 537w, https:\/\/thepapergown.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/gout-img-2-269x168.png 269w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 611px) 100vw, 611px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Does gout cause any complications?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few possible complications of gout, some physical and some mental.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Joint damage<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps unsurprising, considering how gout affects the joints, frequent flare-ups can lead to joint damage, especially if the gout goes untreated. If the damage is severe, you may need surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Kidney stones<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well as leading to gout, high levels of uric acid can also cause kidney stones to form. Kidney stones are made of minerals and salts which have crystalized and stuck together to form hard deposits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney stones can make passing urine painful, and you may feel like you need to go to the bathroom more often. Other symptoms include severe pain in the side, back, lower abdomen and groin; blood in the urine; cloudy urine; nausea and vomiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes kidney stones can be passed naturally, which can be uncomfortable and even cause pain. At other times, surgery may be needed to remove them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Tophi<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tophi are small, white lumps. They form under the skin, and are a result of the build-up of the crystals that form around your joints when you have gout. You\u2019re more likely to get them if you suffer from chronic gout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tophi normally form around:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ears<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elbows<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fingers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forearms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knees<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes they can be painful, but not always. They may become inflamed and produce discharge, in which case they need to be treated. Inflamed or particularly large tophi may be surgically removed to prevent joint damage. Smaller tophi can be shrunk using a combination of medication and lifestyle changes, of which we\u2019ll discuss more later.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Erosions<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gout can cause bone erosion. When parts of the bone have been eroded, your joint will typically have issues functioning correctly. You may need surgery to correct the issue. One study found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/acr.23816\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">44% of patients with gout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also had bone erosions. Bone erosions were more likely to be seen in those who were older, had had gout for longer and had tophi present.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Anxiety or depression<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms of gout can make it difficult to go about your everyday life. This, in turn, can affect your mood, and in more serious cases may lead to a mental health condition, such as an anxiety disorder or depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Anxiety and anxiety disorders<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety is a normal emotion for us, where we might feel tense and worried. An anxiety disorder, on the other hand, involves more than temporary worry. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an anxiety disorder is characterized by \u201crecurring intrusive thoughts or concerns. They [people with anxiety disorders] may avoid certain situations out of worry. They may also have physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, dizziness, or a rapid heartbeat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak to your doctor if you notice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel constantly on edge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re finding it difficult to concentrate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel restless and irritable<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re isolating yourself from family and friends<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re avoiding situations which make you feel anxious<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019ll be able to offer you support, such as referring you for talk therapy, which is also known as psychotherapy. Talk therapy is a way for patients to identify and discuss emotional issues with a mental health professional, as well as create strategies to deal with them. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4610618\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that talk therapy is one of the most effective ways to treat an anxiety disorder, but it can also be useful for those who need a safe, confidential space to talk about their feelings and worries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Depression<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Psychological Association <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defines depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as \u201cextreme sadness or despair that lasts more than days. It interferes with the activities of daily life and can cause physical symptoms such as pain, weight loss or gain, sleeping pattern disruptions or lack of energy. People with depression may also experience an inability to concentrate, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak to your doctor if you notice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel sad or have a low mood for more than a few days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel hopeless<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have low self-esteem<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel tearful<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel guilty<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel irritable<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You lose motivation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You lose interest in activities that you usually enjoy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re indecisive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have thoughts of harming yourself<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have suicidal thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get help from a medical professional as soon as possible if you have suicidal thoughts. You can call or text 988 to reach the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/988lifeline.org\/talk-to-someone-now\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">998 Suicide &amp; Crisis Lifeline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and receive emotional support. They also offer a chat service called Lifeline, and a Spanish-language phone line. All these services are free, confidential, and available 24\/7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your doctor will be able to support you by referring you for talk therapy, where you can discuss your experience with a mental health professional. They may also prescribe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/depression\/guide\/treating-depression-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a type of medication which reduces the symptoms of depression. There are many types of antidepressants available, so your doctor will prescribe one depending on what other medical conditions you have and which medications you already take.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>How to treat gout<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>Can gout be cured?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gout is an incurable condition, but fortunately there are effective ways in which a doctor can treat the symptoms. While treatment is normally required throughout your life, it can sometimes be so effective that it prevents you from having any more gout attacks, as long as you continue to follow your program.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Seeing a doctor<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s important to see your primary care provider if you have symptoms of gout. They\u2019ll be able to refer you to someone who can diagnose it, or they may identify a condition which has similar symptoms (for example, infected joints). Either way, your doctor will be able to advise on the best treatment and management of your condition.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can help your doctor by making note of the following before your appointment:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your symptoms, when they started, and how often you experience them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether anything seems to trigger your symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any other medical conditions you have, and whether you\u2019re taking an medications or supplements for them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether there\u2019s history of gout in your family<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your typical diet and alcohol intake<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any recent changes in your life (for example, something that may cause extra stress)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any questions you have for the doctor\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will help you remember everything you want to tell them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll likely be referred to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rheumatology.org\/I-Am-A\/Patient-Caregiver\/Health-Care-Team\/What-is-a-Rheumatologist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rheumatologist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Rheumatologists specialise in diagnosing and treating conditions (including gout) which affect the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons. You can also find a rheumatologist using the American College of Rheumatology <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.rheumatology.org\/find-a-rheumatologist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">database<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rheumatologist may:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carry out a blood test to measure how much uric acid is in your blood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scan the affected joint(s).
